you could use one of 3 things

a 6 foot tall, black robed, black beaked black footed awakened anthropomorphic half celestial emporor penguin fighter with an 8 foot long greatsword who smites one of the infadels. treat him as a gestalt fighter/paladin/cleric/favored soul

1 5 foot 1 80 pound 12 year old asian girl in a black kimono with a pair of wakizashi, her eyes golden like a lion's but with 2 slit like pupils in each eye, she sneak attacks and kills a pc by causing heart failure via precise placement. treat her as a Gestalt rogue/wizard/cleric/swordsage

a blue lightning bolt from the sky. treat it as instant death.

Oh... Oh god.

That's... That's like a CR 57 creature right there.

Any creature that can be defeated by walking up a steep slope isn't a threat. Now a SWARM of emporor penguins OTOH...

Using the Shackled City AP, can anyone suggest which XP path to use? Quick, normal, slow?

Cheers,
Ulf.

If you want to run it as-is from the book, the quick progression. That should be the one that matches 3.5. If you plan on adding things here and there, go with the normal so you don't level them before recommended points.

The first step to solve ANY game issue should be to have an honest talk with the players about what you (as the DM) want to run and what they (the PCs) are expecting from the game so that you (all players, including DM) can have fun together.

+1.

Most problems at the game table are social problems. If everyone is there to play the same style of game, you'll do very well. If some players are looking for a style that you don't want to run, it's bound to fall apart.

If you've cleared that hurdle, my best advice is to push them a little harder. My average encounter for my group is CR +2. I arrived at this by starting at CR and increasing the difficulty until I felt comfortable with the challenge. It turns out that CR = APL encounters are sort of dull for my crew.

being half celestial it can actually fly. so climbing won't beat it.

But imagine the shock on the Pc's faces after a rounf of it pretending it can't get up the slope after them, only to have it fly...

Well, my hardcover finally came yesterday for Shackled city and I'm really impressed so far :) Spent a few hours reading and it's going to be fun to run. The next question I had was for anyone who has run it or converted it. Is there a way to easily move it into Golarion?

Cheers,
Ulf

The penguins not being able to go uphill reminds me of the Daleks from Dr Who. That is, until they developed rocket jets and learned how to fly up and down those pesky stairs! /mad cackle

Its not too bad Ulfskar; most of the creatures translate directly over. You do have a fair number of class levels to deal with, just give some abilities that make sense. Also note that the CRs are 1 lower on a per level basis for those with class levels; that means you have a little flexibility, either to add a few small minions (be careful with this, some of those fights are already downright deadly); add a level (typically what I do, though if it is on a "break" level and would give them access to a higher level of spells or an extra BAB, I cross-class regularly... when in doubt a level of Fighter is the easiest to "throw on"), or just lower the XP (not an option for me since I don't use XP).

Usually with an hour's prep time I can bring the stats in line with Golarion for a 6-hour play window (I'm converting as I go). For reference, Osirion was the faction I determined would best fit the mood of the module, so I located it there; and the storyline has flowed well.

Try here. Also look around the SCAP subforum, I know there is more info to be had.
