Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Dark Archive

My group I play with are anime freaks so I want to do an anime inspired adventure. I need to know all the tentacled critters you guys can think of in order to inflict them on my players.

Aren't Gibbering Mouthers tentacled?

Dark Archive

I'm not sure.

What sources are you wanting? Restricted to just the Pathfinder Bestiary?

Dark Archive

Thanks to my friends, I can lay my hands on most sources that are OGL.

Edit: Plus the five Monster Manuals from 3.5.

What do you got so far so as not to bear repeating, or are your victims ... er players ... read these forums?

Dark Archive

Not a lot. I wanted to see what was out there before I started working too in depth.

From the Bestiary alone, you have:

Chuul
Froghemoth
Medusa
Mimic
Ochre Jelly
Otyugh
Roper
Shambling Mound
Shoggoth (duh!)
Vargouille
Violet Fungus
Yellow Musk Creeper / Zombie

Any of these creatures have a direction you're shooting for in your anime inspired game? I have a bunch of books sitting around here to pull from.

Dark Archive

Assassin vine, otyugh, and mimic stand out. So does displacer beast, should I chooe to do the work on it. Also the choker, although it technically doesn't have tentacles.

There's also the Dharculus, the Deepspawn, the Displacer Beast, Dolgaunts, other Daelkyr, the Mind Flayer, the Aboleth and the Neolithid.

Dark Archive

Some definate fun stuff there.

Sounds like an interesting idea!

My sick mind was reminded of this:

One thing I have to warn you is that anime freaks are very likely going to be expecting more out of the melee classes, at least if their anything like the anime freaks I know.

Just be prepared to be asked why they can't do X and how to do Y and be ready to do somehomebrew is all the advice I have for you ^^

Maybe David should be propping open BESM for ideas?

That might be wise, especially if he has the d20 version, stuff in there should be an easy conversion process.

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16, 2012 Top 32

Here's the only list of monsters with tentacles you'll ever need:

" 'Pseudonatural' is a template that can be added to any corporeal creature..."

See Complete Arcane, page 161, or if you need to destroy Tokyo, Epic Level Handbook, page 212.

Pseudonatural creatures and Devastation beetles! :D

Most of the players in my group are veterans of 3.5 and Pathfinder, so they know what to expect. The only complaint I get is that I have so far disallowed ninjas because they dodn't fit with the flavor I have been going for. However, the new campaign most likely will allow them.

I have been trying for five or six years to get them to play BESM. They just don't want to branch out from 3.5/Pathfinder. I have even tried tempting them with Exalted to no avail.

I've played Exalted recently and I admit I wasn't a fan of the mechanics. I'm not exactly the type of guy that carries around 80d6.

That explains why I was getting my ass whupped. ;)

But on a serious note, yeah they're d10s. But to be honest, I don't think it really matters; just change the range that marks the success.

OMG I laughed so hard I cried...

WAIT? WHAT?

It's really not even fair!

The absolute classic.

Grand Lodge

A few other classic D&D tentacled creatures I didn't see mentioned above (though I may have missed them):

carrion crawler
grell
mohrg
flumph!

As a slight variation, you could take the chain devil and replace its chains with tentacles.

If you are looking for naughty tentacles, then as the OOTS cartoon suggested, the black tentacles (or a variant thereof) is a good foundation, as is the entangle spell. There might also be something in the Book of Erotic Fantasy on the subject.

Then you could always introduce oozes whose acid is particularly efficacious on garments....

grell

lol, you couldn't know it, but one of my players has an absolute hatred of grell after getting used as a rope in a grell tug of war during a foray into Undermountain.

I would not be comfortable with a gaming group obsessed with anime requesting a tentacled monster to fight.

Not comfortable at all.

Who said they were requesting it?

Dark Archive

Exactly, this is my own little surprise for them. Mwahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

O_o

Dark Archive

I was actually originally inspired by this thread.

Anyways, the Summoner's eidolon is essentially a build-a-beast workshop, and tentacles are a very cheap evolution. A grapple-centric tentacular eidolon as big as possible with Grab and Greater Grapple can be ideal.

Grand Lodge

A couple more: normal and fiendish versions of giant squids and octopi. Also, krakens. How about a flying, air-breathing pseudonatural kraken for a bit of joy?

You could also track down the d20 Call of Cthulhu book, which I'm sure has creatures right up your alley.

Off topic, have you considered re-flavoring the Ninja with the more arabic Hashhashin? Same idea, different flavor, and arabic stuff works better with medieval settings more than oriental does.
