Isle of Dread Reincarnation

Savage Tide Adventure Path

A character in my campaign died in HTBM, and they have been reincarnated by a druid. Two issues face me though.

1) The party is now level 9, when he died this character was level 8, so he will come back at the start of level 7. He is already in a party with a druid and a warlock/binder/beguiler/incarnate/something else, and as a single-class barbarian specialising in Dex, Int and Con he is already quite weak.

2) What's actually on the list: bugbear, dwarf, elf, gnoll, gnome, goblin, half-elf, half-orc, halfling, human, kobold, lizardfolk, orc, troglodyte. Ot those, Only humans, lizardfolk, kobolds and troglodytes are thematically appropriate.

So I want to create a new list of Isle appropriate races, preferrably with an ECL mod of +1 to +4

I've already looked at the saurials in the serpent kingdoms web enhancement, can any of you give me extra suggestions?

Well, there's Rakastas (sp?) that are living on IoD, and have stats in one of the adventures, and with all of the demons around, I'd put in tieflings.

There's also Phanatons - flying squirrel/racoon humanoids, like Navesh from TBWG - living on the island I believe. They're Small though, that might be problematic.

Or a fishy.

One of the Stormwrack races might work the shoal halfing or the aquatic elf/half elf.

fwiw: the "experience point total is immediately set to the midpoint of the previous level."

... suggestions?

You could maybe just choose whatever race you want him to be and tell him the Olman Druid cast a maximized reincarnate (i.e. "All variable, numeric effects of a spell modified by this feat are maximized" resulting in an 'other' reincarnation result of the DM's choice... I doubt the player would argue the interpretation ;)

Stormwrack races are cool - especially the Darfellan.

You could also consider giving him a negative level instead of losing a level. (-1 to attacks, saves, skill and ability checks, -5 hp, -1 spell at highest level) Every time he levels up he can also remove a negative level. Saves recalculating, or removing powers. Every so often he'll miss by one and you can say it was due to uncontrollable shivers/ glimpses of the afterlife etc. Everyone happy!

I used the following table (Danger - Forgotten Realms)
01-03 Aquatic Elf
04-05 Aquatic Half-elf
06-10 Aventi

This does bring up an interesting concept: geographically-based reincarnate. This makes sense from a certain point of view - that the local wildlife and humanoid population has a direct influence upon the 'bodies' that the spell will 'access' to re-create the recipient's carcass.

Thus, one can extend this to the Golarion Adventure Paths, drawing upon the wandering monster tables throughout the AP chapters. Without altering the PRPG reincarnate chart this generally leaves a few 'slots' open for substitution while retaining the standard core rulebook races in their respective 'slots'. I would add the local or closest regional human ethnicity to the human line.

  • 01: bugbear
  • 26: gnoll
  • 39-42: goblin
  • 90-93: kobold
  • 94: lizardfolk
  • 95-98: orc
  • 99: troglodyte

The customized charts posted above are AWESOME for the Isle of Dread! It occurs to me that the concept can be extended to the existing (and future) Adventure Paths.

Why am I not surprised nearly everyone has their own custom Reincarnate table? :P

Mine is mostly LA 0 and +1 creatures, a couple +2s, up until 90. 90-94 is "roll again, swap gender". 95-99 is "roll again, plus roll on template chart and apply template". (My group runs Aasimar, Tiefling, Zenthyri, Chaond, Genasi, etc. as templates rather than races. Other possibilities are Feytouched, Dark, Draconic, and a few other minor things, nothing above LA +2.) 100 is "roll again, plus roll on template chart, plus swap gender".

Roll again, swap gender? TURIN! Here's one for you mate!

I've redone the table to make ECL mod races less likely (11%).

It is a tad vindictive, isn't it. Muahahah.

^_^ As much as I would like to take credit for reincarnate changing gender as my idea, that belongs to Orthos and others, not me, carborundum.

The 3e version of "belts of gender bending" being used by Olangru in the Savage Tide is mine however (I think).
