Starting a new char looking for suggestions

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

The characters starting level will be 3 using the stat array of 15,14,13,12,10,8 starting gold of a level 3, only half gold can go to item creation feats (if i take them) and no more than half gold can go to 1 item.

That is the info the dm has given me to make a character. Currently I believe there will be a cleric and a rogue in the group.(The rogue is well completely retarded but we won't go there)So basically i'm looking for a suggestion on what i should run for a character and a run down of his char and maybe some suggestions for further progression.

Well to be honest there is no way for anyone to give an good opinion about what you should play. it depends on what you enjoy. I could very well tell you to play a bard, but that doesn't mean you will enjoy playing one or even be effective in your group dynamic.

A little info on what role you want to fill or even what type of character you want to be would be really helpful.

Also are you playing straight pathfinder or is your dm going to allow books produced by WotC or other 3rd party publishers.

Your using the elite array? Reason please. Big group, new DM? New player? What races are allowed? What are you good with? Go tier Fishy. Fighters make good fillers but not everyone likes beaters. Ranger rogue flanking buddy. wink, wink, say no more.

This will be straight pathfinder, most likely just the core book as well unless i can get a hold of some of the other pathfinder books with stuff in them. So far in pathfinder i have played a fighter and an npc sorcerer, i have thought of maybe rolling a druid, and TBH i have never played a bard ever 3.5 or otherwise. I was also looking for a suggestion of what kind of character would be good for a party of three with a cleric and a suicidal rogue. So if someone could maybe link or write up a druid build that would be nice to look at. I am looking somewhere in the department of high damage or a character with the capabilities to keep the rogue in line and quite possible just alive.

Not a new DM nor a new player, using the elite array because that is what i was told i had to use, i was also given the option of a 13 point, point-buy. Your other questions have some answers in my post above.

Liberty's Edge

The post has a fair amount of useful information, but not enough.

What do you want to play?

How do you feel about Spellcasting? Specifically, how do you feel about Blasting spells (magic missile, fireball, etc), Control spells (grease, web, etc), Party Support spells (magic weapon, haste, etc).

How do you feel about melee? Specifically, how do you feel about dealing lots of weapon damage versus lots of situation damage versus some damage and a debuff (stunning fist, sunder, etc)? About having lots of attacks versus a few powerful ones? About mobility versus AC versus damage?

What kind of cleric is the cleric? Is he a "healbot", focusing on healing the party with channeling and sacrificing spells? Is he a "caster", focusing on damaging and buff spells? Is he a "battlecleric", focusing on self buff spells?
With the first, playing a heavy-hitting but vulnerable melee character is the way to go, but with the third you'd want to avoid melee so as to not step on his toes.

Likewise, what kind of rogue is the rogue? Is he a dual-wielding backstab machine? Is he a sneaking sniper? Is he a skill monkey who hates combat and wants to steal from the party?
With the first, a melee guy would be great, to set up flanks, but with the third you need to be something flexible, independent, and powerful, like a druid or wizard, so you can survive and seek revenge when he inevitably betrays you.

In short, more information please.

First off i belive the cleric will be a healbot however this will only happen if the party can function with only 2 being able to fight, the rogue is always a sneak attacker trying to do the most damage he can while sacrificing other things. I have no problem playing either melee or casters. As i said at this moment in time i'm trying to fufill the unfilled roles so the group can function, like i said earlier playing a druid might not be such a bad thing if one can be rolled to suit the needs of the group.

I am however open to anything and any suggestions as to what can fit these specifications would be greatly appreciated.

Well with small groups, especially ones where the other players fill a small niche, I always try to be as versatile as possible.

I think fighter might be the best bet. d10 HD means you can afford to eat some of the damage for your buddies, and with weapon training you can be pretty good at both ranged and melee. you'll be able to set up flanks for the rogue, and with ranged you are not helpless against flying creatures.

Since you seem to be leaning toward Druid i don't think i can be much help. i have never played one, and do not know of any specific build that is superior to another. from what i've heard druids are pretty good.

I would still do my best to be versatile, you don't want to get stuck in an encounter where no one in your group and be effective.

Ya fighter as i assumed, i was trying to lean away from fighter just because i have played 2 different fighters so far plus that sorc npc but if i must i will, would it be possible to get a build layout (how you would make the fighter, what attributes are what what feats ect) and i was looking for a build beyond level three possible at least planned out till ten.

I would suggest a melee half orc bard. Its something different to what you have played, It can provide flank for the rogue, it has arcane spells (your party lacks), some good defense spells, can use wands for healing AND can sneak with the rogue if he gets it in his head to wander off.

The other option would be a paladin if you can handle icky goodness. Any build works really and with flank providing and extra healing will make the parties life easier.

If its a lower power campaign the 'switch hitter' ranger is also handy. Get in some melee peppering before melee but if the rogue is charging/tumbling in you won't get the chance so the paladin following with healing or the bard tumbling with are better choices.
