This would be cool info for Ustalav also...neat

Shadow Lodge

Yep excited about Carrion Crown.

Dark Archive

Awesome Conversion! Thank you for all of your good work.

U.C.,
Glad to know you're still out there, doing your misty business.
Now to go and figure out who you are in RPGSS'11.

Hey Damien, was just curious if you might be interested in helping with Ravenloft episode for Darker Days, (originally same guys that do Roll for Init).

Just an idea so far, but I thought of you when I heard it.

Sure Beckett sounds interesting. How should I contact them?

Shadow Lodge

Well, right now it is just an idea, but you can contact them at Darker Days or thier facebok site DD Facebook.

Going to get through reading the first part of Carrion Crown today. The changeling (a hag's child) is certainly a great little race to include in Ravenloft.

Thank you for the conversion. I had just decided to start a little Ravenloft campaign with Pathfinder rules and your work is very helpful.

I will be using the first instalment of Carrion Crown for the first adventure. To this end, I plan on just adding Ustalav to the Core; it should fit nicely and I can either follow the Adventure Path or expand to other domains afterwards.

Hello, I have been a huge fan of Ravenloft since its release and was very happpy to see a Pathfinder update so to speak for it.

I have a question though, Did you ever update the downloadable PDF from yer blog site with the errata you spoke of?

Shadow Lodge

Hi UpSbLiViOn,

Sorry still working on material. Quietly this time so as not to disappoint people with unmet dead lines.

Ugly Child.

Any updates?

Shadow Lodge

I'd like to see what your working on, and maybe give some insight/opinions.

Ravenloft was my absolute favorite setting of any edition of D&D so if you need any help what so ever feel free to send me a message and let me know what you need.

So... did the Advanced Race Guide Playtest yield any insights for the Mistfinder races?

What happened with this project? I would really like to see an update.

Dark Archive

Hi all, just to let you know that real life has got in the way of gaming for a little while there. I'll hopefully be starting work on a revision of the document soon, with all the info now available from the APG, Ultimate Magic, Ultimate Combat and some experience at running Ravenloft for over a year in Pathfinder. The current goal is just to get the new base classes adapted for use and get some of the errata implemented. I'll take a look at the race building stuff when a final version comes out (as I don't think the playtest was all the way there yet).

Also I'll be popping in an entry to RPG Superstar this year, cause you never know.

Sorry for the Delay,
Ugly Child.

I am just returning to the boards after a fairly long abscence, but I'd LOVE to see more on this! I did play testing for old second ed Ravenloft stuff, and Cindi Rice (who was the brand manager for 2nd ed Ravenloft) was one of my players back in college, so I have kind of a bested interest in Ravenloft...:)

Is there any possibility that we can get another download link to the Mistfinder PDF?

The link on the website does not seem to be working.

Very cool that you are doing more. I read it and my main reaction was, what no more? Pity you can't sell it. As that would make it a lot easier to get more stuff going with it.

Downloaded :D

Need any help with the new version?

Shadow Lodge

I'm all for helping again, too, if you like. I believe you mentioned wating until after RPG Superstar, though, which is perfectly cool, and good luck in advance.

Dark Archive

Yeah, I'm concentrating on flexing design muscles on some RPG Superstar ideas at the moment. I'll be getting back to things after round one if I don't make the cut.

I'm open to any suggestions in relation to the conversion, as before. I've been plying around with all the new base classes in my own Ravenloft campaign to get some ideas, so hopefully version 2 will be a bit tidier. :)

Hi all,

Just a quick poll how do people feel about archetypes versus prestige classes?

When I started this conversion archetypes were not around and so to give flavour I introduced the prestige classes of the previous version. Now some of these prestige classes have been covered by core archetypes or in archetypes designed by me or through this thread. Some prestige classes, for example Night Lord, don't seem a good fit for archetypes. What sort of approach should I go with in the next version?

I would say go with what makes the most sense. If it makes more sense that it is a archetype go that way. If it makes more sense as a PrC go that way. I would imagine there would be a mix of both if it was done using PFRPG rules.

The biggest yardstick I use for archetypes is to ask myself "does this idea need more than three special abilities to represent?" If the answer is no, I think it's better as an archetype, rather than making a prestige class which has to pad those three powers with things like bonus feats and existing special abilities (plus all of the other prestige class baggage, like class skills, prerequisites, etc.).

You'll also want to have a keen idea on what's being removed for an archetype, and make sure to balance what's being lost with what's being gained.

There's also a thematic component. Archetypes, to me, represent a slight variant or twist on the existing base classes (as those classes are largely generalized). A prestige class, by contrast, is different enough that it can't be summarized as "like base class X, but slightly different."

Shadow Lodge

I like Prestige Classes much more than Archtypes. In short, I think that Prestige Classes have more flavor, pay-off, and feel better, because it's something that the play and the character have to invest into and earn, and that can be felt.

Archtypes are nice, and the only real advantage is that (sometimes) they allow characters acces to a build or theme from earlier on than a Prestige Class does, but they are also basically free, and just don't have any value to the player. They are very general, and not balanced well at all, especially for a setting like Ravenloft which changes some core assumptions about the game.

For instance shifting the Paladin from all evil, but focusing on Outsiders, Undead, and Dragons mainly to mostly just Undead (and stronger against them) is going to be very much a smart idea in ravenloft, as Outsiders and Dragons are much less common.

That, and even moreso than with Prestige Classes, Archtypes really really favor some classes while others have almost none. A lot really step on other classes toes, and can end up doing things better than other classes or allowing options denied to other classes, which is very bad.

Finally, we are getting to the point that there isn't much more we can do with Archtypes. They are getting fairly similar to each other in alot of ways.

Archtypes are also tied to a single class, while Prestige Classes are (generally) open to multiple paths of entry.

I would suggest, keep the Prestige Classes, and maybe throw in 1 or 2 Archtypes for each class, but keep them both pertinent to Ravenloft and fairly equal amongst the classes.

Additionally, it might be a good idea to make a few classes' Archtypes (Alchy, Summoner, Witch) the norm for the class for a more Ravenlofty feel?

January to June... any updates? :)

Looking forward to future versions of this!

Shameless bump a year later is that illegal? Relating to the topic however....

One of the guys that helped on a few of the ravenloft lines Ryan Naylor is doing a conversion as well and has thus far seemed really extensive of the old 3.5 manual to Pathfinder. :D

Just in case anyone was still interested.... :P

Hello people. I know the last post in this thread was a year ago (again!), but if you guys still want to play Ravenloft under PF rules, Ryan Naylor's work is THE WAY to go. It's the closest thing to official rules you'll find out there.

The three books can be found here:
Ravenloft Resources - ADnD Downloads

Children of the Night
(Darklord stats, and timelines)

EnglishpdfDomains of Dread
(Overview, Races, Classes, Feats, Equipment, Magic, Fear, Horror, Madness, Curses, Powers Checks, Magic Items)

EnglishpdfVan Richten’s Monster Hunter’s Compendium (Monster stats, templates, and monstrous feats)

Enjoy!

Just found this myself on a lark, but it looks like soon we will have 'official' rules for Ravenloft in Pathfinder, in the form of the Horror Adventures rulebook, which will be out later this year (STILL too long for me, though ^_^): http://paizo.com/products/btpy9jcx?Pathfinder-Roleplaying-Game-Horror-Adven tures-Hardcover
