The plane of shadows feels like this adventurous realm but at the same time when running in this area I feel like I am telling my players "Trust me" on how things work. Can anyone suggest any publications (pdf is the best) that might help me answer those nagging questions?
• If you travel at 50 miles per hour how come you don't whiz by encounters.
• Is travel impeded by terrain.
• If you flee an encounter are you moving 50 miles per hour?
• How fast can you stop?
• Are distant light sources visible?
• Does the environment effect perception checks at the beginning of combat?
• If a light source is extinguished does that give everyone concealment?
• What about darkvision and low light in the shadow plane?
• Is there a check to determine if you get lost while shadow walking to a new place?
You get the idea. The questions go on and on. In fact I am sure there are questions that I don't even know yet let alone the answers.

It is only under the effect of shadow walk that you move at 50 miles/hour speed. Apart from that spell, the Plane of Shadow has normal time and gravity.
From the Manual of the Planes book, I thought the travel time was for everyone. Did I misunderstand it? So it is only the spell Shadow Walk that allows the faster travel? So only if a native of the Plane of Shadow has access to the Shadow Walk spell can they travel fast in that plane?

Here ya go with 3.5 Plane of Shadow stats:
Actually, as per The Great Beyond, there are distortions in space and distance on the Plane of Shadow. My take is that the shadow walk is a "fire-proof" way of using PoS as a transport service, while plane shifting there and trying to find your way might yield very different results.

The Plane of Shadow is a place where consistent metaphysical (or metamagical) laws don't happen. As long as you're consistently inconsistent, no worries. ;)
For a nice, semi-normal refuge on the plane of shadow, try getting a copy of Dragon 322, which has the city of Balefire. It looks like the pdf is still available in the Paizo store:
