But, yeah, there's a definite silver lining. Although, statistically-speaking, taller people are more successful and get better promotions than their shorter colleagues (all else being equal), they have a distinct disadvantage when it comes to travel.

I fit in standard airline seats. Ha!

He should have gone by Woodie and become an intellectual. His knees would have been okay, he'd have still gotten a scholarship, and he could have looked down on people who made certain kinds of fun out of his name.
Yeah, look at the successful intellectuals with weird given names. We've got people like Bill Gates, and Richard Dawkins and Jerry Coyne... uh... Stephen Hawkings...

They probably wish they had more interesting names. At least guys like Hawking and Polkinghorne can ask people to call them by their last names.

Yep, celebrate the niche you fit. And give thanks it is not a gish niche.

Kids pick dumb things to be significant. (Scratches "Little Buddy" off list Prospective Nicknames for Kirth Once We are Pals.)

EDIT: Maybe it's better to say, "People pick..."

Yeah, but my point is that the child isn't an abstraction -- it's an actual person, who may not share your desire to inflict real discomfort on them in the form of a goofy name just because of an intellectual disdain for trends.

I always feel bad for the boys who get traditional boy names like Rory and Ryan. They get made fun of for having girl names because some people like giving their daughters masculine names and eventually a trend starts...

So, you know, even if the kid hates their name while they are little, maybe they'll change their mind later.

There is that. I always knew when someone said 'Ian' that they were talking about me, while all the Mikes and Steves and Chrises were looking around confused, because there were like eleventy-billion of them. It was also fun when the deep southern-accented folk would call me Eeee-Yawn.

On the other hand, I've read somewhere that kids with 'unique' names are more likely to end up in jail, statistically. I have no idea where that comes from, but it's possibly that a very special name is associated with being raised to believe that they are very special people to whom the rules of the hoi-polloi do not apply... or not.

My brother is named Ian :)

Oh, that's what my good friend Kelly always tells everyone: no sexually ambiguous names for boys. But HD doesn't have that to worry about. So, if you give a boy's name to a girl just give it some cute spelling, so it looks cute but it sounds sexy. Never ask me to explain this.
