Nualia's personal timeline

Has anyone tried to work out a timeline of Nualia's movements prior to the Swallowtail Festival of Rova 4707? I'm trying and having a hard time sorting out just where she was at any given time.

We know from the Timeline in the Campaign Setting that Jervas Stoot's murders occured in 4702; and from Burnt Offerings that they occured over the course of a single winter month; Kuthona, perhaps. Stoot "began planning" his murders (BO p.9) in response to the runewell's activation which suggests he didn't carry them out immediately, so let's take the multiple references to "five years ago" as reasonaly exact and say the runewell reactivated during Rova 4702.

Burnt Offerings also says that less than a month after Stoot was found out, Nualia burned the old chapel and secretly escaped to Magnimar. So, that should put her arrival in Magnimar sometime in the 4702-4703 winter.

Also, she was in a coma after her miscarriage at seven months, but I can't find anything to suggest how long that coma lasted.

In Magnimar Nualia enlists the Skinsaw Men to track down her fugitive lover and kill him; no information on how long this takes or what else she may have been doing for some three and a half years. Burnt Offerings p.45-50 indicates that both Lyrie and Orik were recruited by Nualia in Magnimar, but there's no indication of how recent that was. We know from BO p.51 that she made at least one trip to Magnimar after setting up shop at Thistletop.

"A year ago" (Burnt Offerings p.20) Tsuto joins "Nualia's group" in Magnimar; this implies Nualia has already become important within the group by the autumn of 4706.

Now back up to the runewell's activation: Rova 4702. Karzoug wakes up, looks around and begins recruiting new agents, in particular the lamias. Xanesha spends four years exploring Varisia before she settles in Magnimar, and apparently in very short order she's found the Skinsaw Men, become their leader, recognized Nualia's potential and given her a sihedron medallion. No indication whether Tsuto was already involved with "Nualia's group" at this point.

Sometime in the past year, not later than spring 4707 we assume, Nualia relocates to the smuggler's tunnels under Sandpoint, breaks into the catacombs and begins "many months" training under Erythium. While there she gets a vision of Malfeshkenor and relocates to Thistletop, but we don't know how long she's been there.

When the runewell flared to life, Nualia miscarried and entered a coma. That same night Lonjiku Kaijitsu tossed his wife Atsuii to the rocks. Atsuii's death was wrongly identified as Chopper's first victim, of which his killing spree was a month long. A month after the killing spree the chapel burns, caused by Nualia awakening from her coma and starting the fire.

I put the coma around two months.

In case it helps, here's the timeline I had written for my campaign:

4624: Foxglove manor is built

4644: Vorel Foxglove’s ritual to become a lich is interrupted by his wife Kasanda. Vorel, Kasanda, their young daughter, and all the manor’s servants die in the chain reaction.

4665: Sandpoint is built.

4673: Lonjiku Kaijitsu’s father inherits the Glassworks and seals off the smuggler tunnels.

4687: Jervas Stoot moves to the island north of town. Traver Foxglove and his family move into Foxglove manor. Later that same year, his wife Cyralie gave birth to their son Aldern (they already had two daughters).

4693: Traver Foxglove kills his wife and then commits suicide.

======

THE LATE UNPLEASANTNESS

Pharast 4701: Delek Viskanta and Nualia Tobyn begin having a relationship.

Desnus 6th, 4701: Tsuto and Ameiko have a big argument. Tsuto strikes Ameiko. Ameiko leaves Sandpoint to become an adventurer.

Erastus 20th, 4701: Nualia realizes that she’s pregnant and announces it to Delek. He leaves her, and Sandpoint.

Kuthona 28th, 4701: Karzoug activates his runewell. ("The runewell in the Catacombs of Wrath under Sandpoint sends a shockwave of magical energy through the town above, manifesting in the form of violent nightmares from which many folk woke in a terrible rage that vanished in the span of a heartbeat"). Lonjiku Kaijitsu kills his wife by throwing her down a cliff. Nualia has her miscarriage. Chopper begins murdering people.

Abadius 10th, 4702: Kerista’s mother is murdered by Chopper (his 9th victim).

Abadius 26th, 4702: Chopper’s last murder, and Mr. Stoot is found dead.

Calistril 2nd, 4702: The funeral of Atsuii Kaijitsu. Ameiko comes back to Sandpoint for this event, and seems to abandon her life as an adventurer from then on. Tsuto accuses his father of killing his mother. Lonjiku strikes him with his cane, almost breaking his jaw. Tsuto curses him and leaves Sandpoint.

Calistril 21st, 4702: The church of Sandpoint is burnt to the ground. Father Tobyn’s remains are found in the ruins. Nualia's corpse is never found, and is assumed to have perished in the blaze.

Spring 4702: Nualia goes to Magnimar, meets the Skinsaw Men, and murders Delek.

Summer 4702: The leader of the Skinsaw Men gives a Sihedron medallion to Nualia and tells her to explore the catacombs below Sandpoint. Nualia finds the Catacombs of Wrath and begins learning under Erylium for many months (until spring of the following year).

===

Summer 4706: Aldern returns to Magnimar and starts living there, interacting with wealthy people, and contacting the Brotherhood of Seven. He begins to reconstruct the manor.

Fall 4706: Tsuto join Nualia’s group in Magnimar.

===

Calistril 4707: Aldern meets Iesha and marries her.

Desnus 4707: Nualia and her followers arrive at Thistletop and take control of the goblin tribe there.

Erastus 30th, 4707: Aldern murders Iesha and hides her body.

Rova 18th, 4707: Aldern accepts to gather some diseased rat sample from his manor. First, though, he goes to Sandpoint to steel his nerves. Tsuto blackmails his father to help the raid.

Rova 21st 4707: The Swallowtail Festival. The Burnt Offerings adventure starts.

Sorry for the thread necro, but I am about to create a prequel adventure for complete newby players and am trying to figure out the pre-timeline.

I found one discrepancy though, the runewell was said to be activated in 4705 thus triggering the murder of Ameiko Kaijitsu by her husband in the very same night.

Also, it is said that Ameiko returns after a year adventuring to attend her mothers funeral, which would be 4706 (probably NOT happening a full year after her death)

In addition, the late unpleasantness is said to be in 4702

Those numbers don't add up.

Given that Ameiko is born in 4689, it would turn her 16/17 for her adventuring year in 4705/06 and 13/14 if set in 4702, a tad too young I'd say.

I could never figure out why Paizo made this timeline so complex?

Is it just me?

Jade Regent clears this up a little. Our GM shared some of the timeline with me since Ameiko is my campaign NPC relationship. The Anniversary Edition of RotR may have cleared some of this up, too. We played the original/3.5 version which was murky.

She ran away from home twice, not once. The first time was to Magnimar, and that was the one right before her mother died. She came back from Magnimar to attend the funeral, and was at home for a couple of years before finding life with her dad insufferable. Then she went adventuring.

I have rough dates somewhere and will try to find them if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Edited to add: It's not so much "cleared up" as "retconned". In Jade Regent they set her at a particular age, and if you did the math using the original RotR timeline it would have put her 13 or so when she went adventuring, which would have been icky and creepy.

I doubt it's on purpose.

Part of it is trying to keep the timeline sufficiently vague so that GMs don't feel obligated to adhere to a strict, canon timeline. You'd be surprised how many GMs are unwilling to deviate from what's "official," even in their home games.

There may also be some errors that crept in during development (likely because much of the language is vague per my first point) and some things were simply never fleshed out (such as exactly how long Naulia was in a coma).

Finally, IIRC, the timeline was revised a little prior to the Jade Regent AP and that may also contribute to the confusion or inconsistencies.

I think some/many of the items in the older posts above are incorrect or inaccurate though many are likely speculation by the authors since I'm not sure there are official "canon" dates for several of the events.

Here is my understanding of the key dates and their order of occurrence.

4707 beginning of AP
4706 Ameiko "retires" from adventuring, returns to Sandpoint and takes over the Rusty Dragon
4705 Reaching the age of 16 and tired of dealing with her bitter father, Ameiko leaves Sandpoint and takes up adventuring.
4702 Nualia burns the Sandpoint Cathedral to the ground and flees to Magnimar
4702 Ameiko returns for her mother's funeral. Tsuto and Lonjiku come to blows, Tsuto leaves Sandpoint.
4702 The Late Unpleasantness: Sandpoint runewell surges to life, triggering Atsuii's death, Nualia's stillborn child and kicking off Chopper's reign of terror.
4702 Ameiko has a falling out with her brother and family and runs away (though not necessarily to be an adventurer.)

I didn't put any months in there since since other than the start of the AP (Swallowtail festival), I'm not sure specific months are documented elsewhere. I didn't put any dates in there for Nualia to do things or meet people in Magnimar or return to Sandpoint since I'm not aware of an "official" timeline. If you need more precision or dates for other events, I think you're free to make up your own (or use those in the other posts above) since I don't see how it could affect the play of the AP as written. Even the Ameiko dates aren't all that important (unless you intend to also run Jade Regent in a related continuity.)

Using Jade REgent's updates, Ameiko's timeline becomes:

4689: Ameiko is born
~early winter 4702: Ameiko runs away to Magnimar
~spring 4702: Ameiko returns for Atsuii Kaijitsu's funeral (I am not sure where the Calistril 2nd date comes from...that seems too early in the year)
~4705: Ameiko leaves Sandpoint as an adventurer
~4706: Ameiko returns and buys the Rusty Dragon

Also: Ninja'd!

The snippets my GM sent me from the first Jade Regent book had these two lines which help nail down some dates:

Brinewall Legacy wrote:
When she was 13, Ameiko tried to reconcile the bad blood between her brother and father, but the attempt backfired. Tsuto struck her in a fit of rage, and Ameiko was so betrayed and distraught by this that she ran away from home to Magnimar for several months.

Hence "early winter 4702".

Quote:
Ameiko left home for the second time at age 16 after life in the house alone with her father and the help grew too depressing to bear.

Hence leaving sometime in 4705.

There's some text in there apparently that states they ran into some trouble in 4706 and returned afterwards. The AP is very explicit that she doesn't talk about what happened. So we only know that's when she returned.

I have the Anniversary Edition in Hardcover and the old ones as pdf.

In the AE, it is stated that she has a fight with Tsuto in 4705 and goes adventuring directly afterwards.

THEN returns one year later to attend her mothers funeral.
(Which would be a result of the late unpleasantness)

But of that would have been in 4702 as the AE says, they would have taken 4 years to bury her poor mother.

Those numbers alone don't add up

Yeah, then they definitely retconned/corrected this for Jade Regent because, as you point out, it does not add up otherwise.

I just took a look at Ameiko's History in Jade Regent.

There, it is cleared up:

She DOES run away twice as Latrecis has written.

After the Argument with Tsuto in 4701 she runs away to Magnimar (probably to some relatives or such) but returns some months later in 4702 to attend her mothers funeral.

Then, she continues living with her father in the mansion but can't bear it for long and goes adventuring for a year in 4705.

Her group get wiped out almost entirely in 4706 which makes her return to Sandpoint the same year and buys the Rusty Dragon with her earnings.

Thanks for pointing me to the Jade Regent path for the clarification!
