Quick (dumb) questions: attacks

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

When a monster like, say, the sinspawn in RotR is listed as having 2 claw attacks and a bite attack, does it get all three attacks in a full-round action, or is there a limit of two attacks at that low a BAB? If it only had a standard attack, would it only get one claw attack? Did I misunderstand the 2 claws=2 attacks thing completely? I'd like to be 100% sure.

Scarab Sages

It gets all attacks with a full-round attack. With a standard action it uses a single attack with its primary weapon, usually the claws (it will always be the one with the highest to-hit bonus).

Also note: some monsters like the sinspawn have the feat "multiattack", which means in a full attack situation the secondary attack/s is/are at -2 (instead of the default of -5).

Thanks guys. :)

How can you tell which natural attacks are primary and which are secondary? I was looking through the druid animal companions and some have 3 or more attacks, yet only the horse entry identifies which attacks are secondary. Does that mean that the other animal companions with multiple attacks get them all at their full attack bonus?

It's too bad it isn't clear there, but when I looked over the animals in the v.3.5 MM, and the rules for natural attacks in that book -- we don't have the PF Bestiary to work with yet -- it specifies the following (my synopsis):

1) Usually in the MM when there is more than one type of attack listed, the first one is considered the primary and the remaing ones are secondary. When in doubt, treat the most logical attack as the primary attack. The DMG actually speaks of this order.
2) Primary attacks benefit from a STR bonus to damage ONLY, while secondary attacks can only use a 1/2 STR bonus. If the animal has one sole attack, it is primary of course, and it uses a 1+1/2 STR bonus. Example: dire wolf.
3) Even if the animal makes only one attack with a secondary weapon, it is still penalized to hit as a secondary weapon.

Keep in mind that there may be tweaks on this between the MM and the upcoming PF Bestiary....

EDIT: page 53 of the PFRPG explains a bit under the title "Animal Choices". And it looks like things indeed have been changed for natural attacks by animals in PF! All attacks at full BAB unless otherwise noted. And of course there is a note of exception for the horse!

Wow, good catch that little bit of information certainly affects everyone converting their own monsters(animals).

Wow, animals are gonna hit a lot more in PF!
