Skill... Powers?

4th Edition

Dark Archive

Huh.

This month's Player's Handbook 3 debut content introduces skill powers. These are utility powers that characters qualify for based not on their class but by virtue of their training in a particular skill.

Dear lord and lady, the RPGA folks are going to have a field day (re)optimizing their PCs when this book's released....

Wasn't Skills and Powers the big pointy stick that 2nd Ed. got jabbed in the eye to death by?

It's Skill Powers not Skills & Powers. =)

Being off-topic, I believe the 2E Player's Option series was really a mess in terms of rules, but a necessary step that led to evolution of the system and development of 3E. After all, many 3E concepts such as combat maneuvers, monster advancement, spontaneous spellcasting, and class customization were born on Player's Option.

So, are these "skill tricks" by another name?

Yes, it seems so. They vary in how they can be used, though. Whereas skill tricks were limited to one per encounter (one of the few 1/encounter mechanics in 3.5), these vary in the frequency they can be used from at-will to daily.

Or other systems.

Yes, of course, when I said "born" I was actually meaning "first applied on D&D".

But I guess you all understood that. =)
