New Regeneration rules

Rules Questions

Sovereign Court

Am I correct in saying that by the new rules a party could fight a troll (with a 15con) with normal weapons and beat it to -20 hp then apply a torch to it (for 1-6hp fire damage) and the troll would regenerate 5hp at the end of the round but be dead the next becasue the fire prevents it from regenerating and it is at -15 hp.

Is this correct?

You're close. Creatures regenerate damage at the beginning of their turn, not the end of the round. And after the fire has been applied, the troll doesn't regenerate for the next round. So this would happen;

1) Characters beat troll to -20, apply fire.
2) At the start of the troll's turn, it is on -20 hp. Since fire was applied to it within the last round (i.e., since the troll's last turn), it regenerates no hp this round. Furthermore, it checks its current hp and finds it below -10. With its regeneration not functioning, the troll dies.

If fire had not been applied, and its regeneration had been functioning, it would have:
a) Healed 5 hp, taking it to -15
b) Checked its hp total and found it below -10. Since its regeneration is functioning, however, this doesn't kill the creature. It is unconcious, but regenerating.

Actually, you don't check against -10 but against the negative of the troll's Constitution value. Otherwise, I think, you explained it exactly right.

Great thanks to both of you.

Ah, yes, I forgot about that rules change. :)

I have another question regarding the troll. Since it has regeneration but it's not the regeneration SPELL, does Blinding Critical work on it at all or does it automatically ignore the ability since it can regenerate?

Thats an interesting question. Regular healing does not cure blindness so normally I'd say no... however a Troll could possibly rip its own eyes out and grow them back.

Well it should work and the troll should be blinded lets say for two rounds to allow its eyes to grow back. Trolls have been known to rip off their arms in combat and throw them like javelins at flying characters or spell casters mucking about in the rear. Grisly I know! A game designer could give us better clarification
