Question about Holy Champion

Rules Questions

so my question is the Holy Champion class feature of the paladin reads as follows

Holy Champion (Su): At 20th level, a paladin becomes a conduit for the power of her god. Her DR increases to 10/evil. Whenever she uses smite evil and successfully strikes an evil outsider, the outsider is also subject to a banishment, using her paladin level as the caster level (her weapon and holy symbol automatically count as objects that the subject hates). After the banishment effect and the damage from the attack is resolved, the smite immediately ends. In addition, whenever she channels positive energy or uses lay on hands to heal a creature, she heals the maximum possible amount.

My quest is does the smite end whether the banishment works or not. I only ask because a player of mine thinks it only ends the smite if the creature is banished. thank you for your feed back.

As I'm reading this, yes. Once you resolve the banish effect, then the damage, the Smite Evil effect ends.

I'm sure Nethys will correct me five seconds before I post this. XD

Scarab Sages

According to the RAW, it ends as soon as the banishment effect is resolved, whether it is successful or not.

This essentially means that levels 1-19, a paladin's smite evil only gives an attack and damage boost that lasts so long as the creature is alive.

At level 20, this changes in regards to evil outsiders. It effectively only lasts one round, but has a chance to banish them in the process.

Nethys

If that is the case, I'd think that the Paladin should be able to choose not to use the Banishment if he s choosed. If for some reason my chances were really low, I'd want to be doing more damage and not blowing all of my smites.

It's almost like at 20th level, the Paladin gains the ability to become a 3.5 Paladin against powerful outsiders. :-(

It doesn't appear to be optional, which is annoying it your goal is to actually kill the outsider.

Note to 20th level paladins: don't bother smiting outsiders if you are not on your home plane, because the banishment will automatically fail.
