Dieterich Fletcher |
Becoming even more frustrated by his foe's blocks, Dieterich brings his shield up in a defensive position and and dives down to one knee, aiming his whirling flail at the thug's legs, hoping to bring him crashing down...
Trip Attack with Combat Expertise (1d20+5=23)
HP 12/13, 3 points of non-lethal damage
AC 21, 14 touch, using Combat Expertise this round
Ellantera |
Naria is feeling nauseous but still manages to put some hurt on her foe, and Dieterich swipes his opponent off his feet.
Airlon is up, then the luckless thugs.
I'm not sure who Naria is fighting. She knocked her foe out before she took that staggering hit earlier. Do I have her on the map wrong?
Airlon |

Airlon is up, then the luckless thugs.
Airlon unleashes another electrical ray, this time at the thug threatening Naria. "Who else wants to get fried!"
Ranged touch attack roll = 14+4-4=14
Damage = 1d6+1= 6
Black Tom |
Naria is fighting the second thug coming down the stairs. I forgot to mention that he moved.
Airlon has a hard time trying to avoid hitting Naria, so the thug easily dodges the electrical bolt.
Torrent takes a hit for 4 points of damage while Ellantera suffers 6 points. Dieterich's opponent is trying to rise and triggers an AoO. Despite being groggy Naria still manages to evade her foe.
You're up.

The "luckless thug" knocks Ellantera out with a well-placed blow. Was this nonlethal damage, also, or lethal? Was Torrent able to do anything with the flanking I provided? Just don't want my character to have died without doing anything -- at least Jace was able to shoot someone... ;-)
Naria |
Black Tom |
Not sure if that attack of opportunity takes advantage of the -4 AC from being prone. I'm going to wait on a ruling before I take my turn.
It does. That also means that you cannot trip him again, since he is prone when you get the attack.
I also failed to mention that Torrent took a swing and missed and that the damage to Torrent and Ellantera was nonlethal. Dieterich's opponent is the only one who's drawn a sword so far.
Black Tom |
I'm not sure who Naria is fighting. She knocked her foe out before she took that staggering hit earlier. Do I have her on the map wrong?
Naria is fighting the thug marked 6, who has by now advanced to take the place of thug 5, whom she knocked out (with some help from Jace).
Audric Dolet |
Audric once again attempts to club one of the soldiers with his staff.
2 more times today: 1d20+4=15, 1d6-1=4
Black Tom |
Dieterich's opponent again narrowly manages to parry the blow. Torrent finally manages to land a powerful blow and her opponent collapses in a heap. Airlon's magic confounds one of the thugs and Audric's staff strikes true at Ellantera's foe - but now you've got his attention.
Dieterich is up.
Black Tom |
Finding themselves outnumbered and outgunned, the thugs lower their weapons. One even tries an uncertain smile. "OK, mates, let's call it a draw. If you just let us pick up our friends and leave, we won't bother you again." He gestures outside, where there seems to be a lot of commotion. "It sounds like we all have bigger problems than this anyway, what with the Ragesian bombs falling everywhere. And you're not really hurt, are you? Just a few friendly bumps. We don't have anything against you anyway, we just wanted the bounty."
Black Tom |
Naria pauses mid punch swing "err what bounty?" she asks looking between her group and them still standing mid punch.
"Unlicensed magic-users, luv. The Ragesians pay us a 100 gp per head, and that's a lot of money, you know." The thug pants and then smiles wrily. "So if you would just come quietly things would be better for everyone."
Black Tom |
"I'm not a magic user you brain dead hick" The hand wavers slightly as if she is deciding whether she should go through with the rest of the punch or not.
"So why don't you and your murderous friend [nodding at Dieterich] just leave while we bundle up your associates. We're sorry for the inconvenience, but this is standard procedure." The bandit spits out some blood and possibly a tooth.
Airlon |
"Hey, that's my friend you're talking about. The bombs did that, not us. If the damned Ragesians hadn't taken out half our team you guys would be toast by now. Maybe it's not too late after all..."
Without warning Airlon unleashes another electrical blast of energy at the thug who is speaking, hoping to catch him flatfooted.
Ray = 1d20=20 +4 =24
Damage= 1d6+1=3
"No one is taking my head or handing me over!"
Black Tom |
Airlon's blast strikes the thug square in the chest and he winces, but his hold on his sap tightens.
"Alright, alright! Just kidding. Let us just pick up our fallen friends and we'll be out of here. But if it's not us, someone else is sure to be coming after you, and they won't be using nonlethal blows."
Black Tom |
Once the bounty hunters are safely out of the way, Torrent fingers her holy symbol and unleashes a couple of bursts of renewed vigor, healing everyone 7 points of damage (and 7 points of nonlethal damage), reviving Jace and Ellantera.
As the ruckus dies down you hear screaming and shouting outside. The Ragesian bombardment has plunged the town into chaos. Torrent curses. "We'd better get to Rivereye quick", she sighs, "before he panics and flees. I hope you have some good idea about how to get those uniforms so we can get out of here."
xp forthcoming as soon as I get home to my books
Airlon |
"I agree with Torrent that we need to get to Rivereye quick and get out of town even quicker. Posing as guards once we are ready to leave has merit. If we can't get enough uniforms perhaps some can pose as prisoners, or maybe Rivereye or some other sympathetic magic wielders can provide some arcane disguises"
Black Tom |
Black Tom wrote:That's 315 xp each and here's hoping that you have some sort of plan. Or failing that, that you'll follow Torrent's lead and try to meet up with Rivereye. What advancement rate are you using for this campaign? Being old school, I am not used to these 3.xx rules yet.
We're on fast advancement. That's the only one that works with adventure paths.
Black Tom |
As you leave the inn in search of Rivereye you can't help noticing that the city is in turmoil. The streets are starting to fill with panicking people, and though the bombing seems to have ended, there seems to be a battle going on at the west wall. Townsfolk rush about trying to put out fires or get to the shelter of temples, and soldiers hurry to their posts, slowed by the throng and chaos. All the while, bells ring urgent
warnings up and down the mountain pass.
As you try to make your way toward the rendez-vous, you pass a family in the streets. The father is burnt and barely standing, having run back inside his burning house to try to rescue his wife, whose unconscious and burnt body he carries. With his three children, huddled in coats and whimpering, the man croaks out cries for help. As you pass, the man finally collapses from exhaustion.
Will you help them?
Naria |
Will you help them?
Naria stops in her stride and heads over to the family crouching down to looks over the father and mother. Unfortunately healing is not something she has ever generally good at so sends a glance to the rest of the group before turning to the three children
"Are you three okay?" she asks them

The oldest of the three children looks at you sadly. "We're not hurt", she says, "but our house burned down and now we have nowhere to go, and Mommy and Daddy are hurt badly. Mommy was trapped in the burning house and I think Daddy got burnt as he went in to get her out. Do you think they are going to die?"
Black Tom |
Torrent nods softly and takes a wand from her belt. She speaks a word and the father stirs again, but the mother is too badly hurt, even if her burns look a little less grievous after Torrent's magic touches her.
"We can't bring them with us", Torrent says with a pained expression. "Do you think you can get to a shelter?" she asks the bereft family. Mutely they nod.
You watch them trot away toward the nearest temple, a little uncertainly. But then you have troubles of your own. [ooo]...but you get 35 xp each for your troubles.[/ooc]
As you pass a cluster of four-story buildings on fire and push your way through a crowd staring helplessly in dismay, suddenly you hear a crash from far above. A woman smashes out a window on the fourth floor and cries for help, screaming that she is trapped.
Can you do anything for her or will you press on?
Dieterich Fletcher |
Dieterich grits his teeth and pulls his shield out above his head, deflecting a coal dropping from a flaming building.
"Thrice-damned Ragesians... I didn't sign on for this!"
He turns his head quickly as the woman screams from her dangerous perch, and growls.
"Bloody hells... Jace, we got to get her out o' there. You all can still find us a way out of this bloody firestorm, but I'm goin' in to save that lady!"
Dieterich grimaces, pulls the light helm on his head over his face and barges into the burning building, his shield covering his upper body from the flames and ash.
Black Tom |

The heat is overwhelming and makes Dieterich stop in his tracks as a burning beam comes crashing down. Going inside the building without protection would undoubtedly be fatal. There must be another way.
...but I do appreciate the heroics.
Naria |
Naria looks around for anyway to reach or help the woman

I'm back! Glad to see Jace and Ellantera get another chance to live on!
Looking around, Ellantera is overwhelmed by the mad rush of humanity. "Any ideas?"
Perception 1d20=8 Blech!
Black Tom |
A little old lady standing not far from you is wrapped in some sort of huge quilt, which may just do the trick, if you can convince the lady in question to part with it.
If you want to catch the woman in it, one of you will have to make a Strength check. Up to eight other people can Aid Another, so either you could try yourselves or try to convince some of the bystanders to help.
Ellantera |
A little old lady standing not far from you is wrapped in some sort of huge quilt, which may just do the trick, if you can convince the lady in question to part with it.
Assuming Naria has shared her idea with the others, Ellantera will attempt to borrow the quilt from the woman.
"Dear lady, may we borrow your fine quilt for a moment? I believe its fine craftsmanship would allow us to catch yon stricken woman if she falls."
Black Tom |
"Dear lady, may we borrow your fine quilt for a moment? I believe its fine craftsmanship would allow us to catch yon stricken woman if she falls."
The old lady is aghast. "Sure, my dear. Why on earth didn't I think about it. I'd never have been able to forgive myself if the poor creature should fall to her death. Now hurry dear. That poor woman doesn't seem to be able to hold on for long."
You can tell that I made a really great old-fashion reaction roll. :o)
The lady unbundles herself from the quilt, showing several layers of clothing underneath. Either she is very susceptible to chills or she's carrying all she owns. Or both.
The lady helps you clear an area beneath the burning building and spread the quilt on the ground.
Now just get rolling.
Ellantera |
Diplomacy rolls to recruit bystanders: 1d20+6=18, 1d20+6=8, 1d20+6=13, 1d20+6=18
"Here, sir, if you can pause a moment and take this corner of the quilt. Yes, just like that, thank you."
"Sir? Please help us, yes, just like this gentleman."
etc.
"Dietrich, Jace, this has much safer than running into the burning building - please give it a chance."
Aid Another roll for Strength check: 1d20+2=16
I'm assuming Dietrich will be the leader on this effort?
