How much have you lost since the lifestyle change? I've known a couple of people that have done it, and I might consider it in the future.

Almost 200 lbs. I had complications after the fact due to my gall bladder & appendix going kaputz. May or may not been related, but it was a rough year. I'm doing much better now. But the majority of people I know has done fine. My woman's doing a lot better post-op than I had expected (which is good). The only thing I would suggest, other than to carefully consider who does your surgery, is to take any psychiatric profile tests they give you seriously. A lot of people may not be able to hack the fact that it just isn't weight loss but a lifestyle change too.

I am trying to change my lifestyle right now. Eat better and smaller portions. I am hoping to see if I can loose 38 lbs by May. That would put me at 300 lbs.

I'll tell anyone to drop the sodas and fried food for starters. Will do wonders. Drop white for whole grains. You don't drink beer, so that's good too. A little rum won't hurt if you continue that habit, though. :P
Woodraven |
But if soda and alcohol is a hard thing to give up from a social standpoint, I wouldn't recommend this kind of surgery. Not saying you can't have it, but your body processes things differently when bypassing.
Drink rarely, soda not much of a problem since I just gave up chew about 2 weeks ago, a little hard to give up soda completely. but trying to get at least 3 liters of water in a day.

I was up to about 260 lbs (from a college weight of about 210 lbs). It took moving into a three-story townhome (free stairmaster), and putting myself on a weekly budget for lunches during the work week. The budget prevents me from having enough spare cash to put in the vending machine.
Right now, I'm down to about 230 without making any other significant changes in my lifestyle.

You'll get sick of water soon. If you like kool aid, I recommend picking up the generic splenda at a Walmart (it's cheaper there than anywhere else) and use two cups of it along with two koolaid packets and you can't tell the difference. I drink that like it's going out of style here at home. And much better than that flavored water crapola.

That's awesome. That's where I'm sitting comfortably at right now. At one point, I had dipped under 210 and that's actually too thin for my frame. I really looked sick.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I have a broad frame (50 shoulders and 40 waist (currently). The Body Mass Index Chart says I should weigh 180 lbs. I would look anorexic at that weight.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but I found that my sugar cravings were off the charts high while I was drinking lots of splenda. I cut all the artificial sweeteners and it really helped cut down on the junk food cravings. I'll usually put about one to two ounces of fruit juice in a 12 ounce glass of water just for the flavor, and that works well for me. That and tea. Lots of tea.

The BMI thing ... is sorta crap. It's archaic, but it's good enough to get you past the insurance nazis to get the frakkin' surgery approved.

I don't doubt it. But splenda and sugar processes differently Post-Op. One gives me dumping syndrome and the other doesn't. With fruit juices I got to watch what I'm drinking as a lof of them aren't 100% fruit juice or a bit misleading on the label.

EDIT: Post Monster got me.
I'm 6'2" and my neck shrunk to 17" and I have a 38" waist. There's a guy I work with that had the surgery 13 months ago and he's 2" taller than me, but dropped down to a 36" waist and weighs 207. He used to be a hair over 400.

Not having trouble, it's just taking a while. That plus the fact my homebrew inroduces a new mechanic into the game; Bloodline Strength. Your BS increses as you gain levels and gives you new racial abilities. Sort of like Racial Paragons from Unearthed Arcana, but without having to take levels to get the abilities.

From what I read a lot in the homebrews, a lot of BS increases as you gain levels. :P

Ah. Well, that makes sense. Me, I just have to be careful not to have too much sugar because of hypoglycemia. And I only drink 100% fruit juice. Corn syrup and white sugar do bad things to my blood sugar levels, where things like fruit juice, honey, or agave nectar don't effect it as much.

Understandable. Sometimes I eat or drink something because I didn't have access to the label ingredients and I experience that. It's like standing up quickly from a seated position and getting light headed for a couple of seconds before I regain my balance equilibrium.

No problem; just got released. I put up a fit when I bought the previous version one week before the PF upgrade release. LPJ hooked me up. Good customer service, that guy. And shameless self promoter, too. :D

Yep. Except that in my case if I don't get food that dizziness increases until I pass out. That plus low blood pressure means I faint a lot. Well, not as much anymore since I've learned to actually manage my diet to keep that from happening so much. But you get the idea. :)

Lynora, do you drink coffee? I only ask because Ido and I can't take it without sweetener. My mom refuses to buy equal, so we get Splenda. I'm wondering if cutting out the coffee (or seriously cutting back to maybe only two cups a week) in my diet will help curb my cravings.

I find it happen to me a lot when I don't have a decent amout of carbs in my bloodstream. Then again, they really press you to keep your protein intake at a certain level (60 - 72 g per day) and a lot of breads can be difficult to eat as it absorbs fluids and fills you up quickly (which is why toasted stuff is much easier to consume as it crumbles better). I just need to get up more slowly to prevent the dizziness, but sometimes I have to react quickly because one of the pets are acting up. Sometimes they all just can't get along.
But I'm rambling... :P I do get the idea.
