The Gift is the introductory first adventure, in a 3 part mini-campaign set in Kaidan: a Japanese Ghost Story setting will be released in August 2009, tentatively scheduled to coincide with the release of Pathfinder.

There are plans to create a Kaidan RPG Handbook in the fall. This is a collaborative work with Dementia 5 Publishing House.

The Gift - what begins as a simple escort of a gift to a powerful lord in a foreign land leads to a series of uncanny events that risk more than the lives of a party of adventurers, rather the fate of their eternal souls. Deceit, vengeance and dark revelations follow the party as they explore a dark fantasy world called Kaidan: a Japanese Ghost Story setting. Kaidan is a breathtaking empire of samurai, ninja and undead lords rich in legend, culture and nightmares.

The Gift is a mini-campaign arc and an introduction to Kaidan, a dark fantasy setting of oriental myth and gothic horror. It is a world sure to make the bravest adventurer’s blood run cold.

Here's a sneak preview of the cover design for the gift...

Highly interested. Oriental ghost stories always had a strong grip on my imagination.
Exiting to see so many Pathfinder-compatible products in the works.

Count me in with golem, when I say highly interested!

Thanks, guys. I hope I can find enough people interested to make this a successful PFRPG Compatible product.

Since my actual background is as a fantasy cartographer, here's another sneak preview, this is the regional map where the entire adventure arc takes place. Note this one of three large islands that comprise the Kaidan island chain, and the smallest of the three.

Enjoy!

Interesting. Do you have a guestimate on the price? Also, do you have a web site that we can check out and will it be sold through Paizo? Thanks in advance!

Edit - September you say? ~thinks~ That will be a distinct possiblilty on getting me to buy it.

The map kicks A$$. Being that a really dig japanese culture, I'm really excited by this.

Again, thanks!

While I have a rough promo page on the product, I am currently rebuilding it, so it should be ready tomorrow and I'll post a link here, then.

But I do plan to sell it from the Paizo Store, as well as other venues.

Oh, and the price of the initial adventure will be $7.99 as a PDF download, I'm looking to get a Lulu account setup for a printed version, though I don't know the price for that as this time.

Adventure should include 25,000 words (roughly), 12+ maps including many at encounter scale. A VT Map Folio will be made availabe as well. Lots of nice art illustrations as well, as you can tell by the cover design.

Very nice map.

And the adventure sounds interesting as well. Will be keeping an eye out for it.

Count me in! I always loved Nippon-esque adventures... and I'm always looking for ideas to steal for my upcoming Rokushima Taiyoo-based Ravenloft campaign. ;-)

Excellent price point for the PDF, as an oversea (Italy) customer the PDF edition is the one most accessible to me.

Will it be available on the Paizo store?

Third sentence in my second quote in your post - yes, I plan to sell the PDF products from the Paizo Store, though I also plan to sell it at RPGNow, my own site and from the Dementia 5 site as well. Also, Roleplayingtips.com newsletter owes me some advertising for trade work I've done for John Fourr - so Kaidan will be available from several sources.

DOH! Serves me well for posting before having a cup of coffee. :)

The Kaidan RPG website is ready!

Although I'm planning to get its own domain name and then it own site, currently its inside my existing Gamer Printshop site (though I haven't linked from there yet.)

I may add more pages, more details and perhaps its own forum and what not, but this should be enough for a start anyway. Oh, be sure to check the About button dropdown menu for "Setting" as this has more details on Kaidan than the more obvious pages.

As I get more art completed and updates I will keep the website current.

As I said over at ENWorld: I'm really looking forward to this! Also, that's a really great cover. Nicely done you guys!

Looks interesting. Kwaidan is one of my favourite Japanese movies.

Looks to also have some influence from video games such as Onimusha. A dark Japanese fantasy is certainly a novel way of re-treading familiar ground.

Eagerly looking forward to this one.

Jim.

I'm glad the concept is intriguing you, I'm excited too!

While "The Gift" is near completion in the written portion, I was worried about not having the second adventure of the mini-arc "Dim Spirit" ready by the next month, but I just picked up a new writer who will be starting it soon. This means I can try to manage at least a module a month until the full release of the mini-campaign.

After which I plan to immediately start the next larger campaign, which is untitled as of yet. So having a staff of writers to work with, the modules and eventual handbook will be able to meet a reasonable schedule.

While I'm still limited on a budget, I hope you appreciate the production values going into this setting and adventure arcs. The talent of the Kaidan team so far is phenominal. I'm trying to emulate Paizo's production values to the best of my ability.

I thought that bit of news was worth posting!

Great concept, GP: I love Asian ghost stories.

Looks like a most promising start, GP. I can't wait to see this once it's developed.

Of the races of Kaidan so far, I've got: Human (Kaidanese), Barbarian Human (Jommen), Any non-Kaidan race (Gaijin), Spirit Folk, Korobokuru, Hengeyokai, and two new races - Ryujin (Sea Dragon Folk) and Half-Oni (kind of a demonic bloodlined half-orc).

Of my classes so far, they are divided between social castes:

Nobility: Hatamoto (Courtier Samurai) and Onmyoji Court Wizards.
Samurai: 15 variant class samurai
Commoners: Ashigaru (Peasant Soldier - essentially reflavored straight fighters), Jugondo Sorcerers (spirit-blooded sorcerers), Monk (straight Pathfinder Monks, not much more flavor needed), Ninja (with psionic enhanced Ki), Sohei (more martially buffed by otherwise weakened Monks), and Yamabushi (my version of OA Shugenja).
Tainted: Yakuza (straight class rogues with some reflavoring).

I'm also trying to minimize the number Prestige Classes, one however, are my Tattooed Rogues (PrC for Yakuza) Sorry Rokugan fans, but the only historically tattoo bearing people of Japan and Kaidan are Yakuza, not monks.

More coming soon!

I'm sure it would work fine. Actually the initial mini-campaign arc for The Gift is intended for a party of "gaijin" outsiders, not of the Kaidan campaign setting, rather traditional party of western-style adventurers on a short trip to a Japan-like location in the world. So for that set of modules standard characters and races are expected.

Regarding the greater campaign which focuses on locals adventuring there, you could probably use Kaidan flavored standard Pathfinder classes and it would work fine. Although it might be difficult to emulate Ninja with standard classes - a rogue with some arcane access (dual class rogue/sorcerer or even rogue/sorcerer/monk) might work.

Except for some specific classes like Ninja, most of the "classes" I'm creating are essentially straight classes with some oriental flavor is all. Yamabushi (shugenja) are elmentalist priest=monks, also kind of odd building from straight classes as well.

There are some unique feats to consider: ancestral weapons for a samurai build, my Wizards are onmyoji court wizards and though pretty much straight class wizards, they can summon Shikigami imp familiars with some fluff differences, but no real mechanics differences.

I'm sure using straight PFRPG races and classes would work just fine.

Thanks...

This setting has lots of possibilities and I always did like Ravenloft and Oriental settings so the combination should be awesome. However, I have just weaned my guys off the 3.0/3.5 glut of Complete this and Race of that books and am not looking to add a whole slew of feats, classes, PrCs, etc.

I will most likely get all the pdfs and set it in "eastern" Golarion and depending on the number of races/classes/etc. pick and choose what my guys can take.

Thank you for the information. Please continue to post here when products become available, especially those that can be bought thru the Paizo store.

Working on the Encounter Scale maps for The Gift. This is Agoya Shrine, a Shinto holy site, just on the other side of the mountain pass, which the PC party has just barely escaped with their lives. This temple site will offer healing, lodging, food, a divination for each character and explanation of the religions of Kaidan.

Enjoy!

Very nice. Love the small sketch on the lower corner.

Sorry for the delay, the publisher is doing a rewrite on work done by the author for the first adventure. It was supposed to be ready and published on August 13, but has been further delayed. I am seriously thinking about obtaining my own compatability license, as I am used to working on a deadline and my publisher is apparently not. Disappointing.

Anyway, to keep the interests up, here's a map of the Sea Dragon City of Ryukyo, I just created for an upcoming adventure in the larger campaign. Its my first undersea map.

Enjoy!

All your maps are absolutely gorgeous, and I am waiting with bated breath to see the products released. :)

The underwater city definitely makes me think Urashima Taro.

Two responses:

1) This is why I do not pre-order anything, unless it is from Paizo. Not your fault, but disappointing is not down far enough on the food change to reflect my feelings, and I want to keep it as "grandma friendly" as possible.

2) Dementia's blog says it is for OGL 3.5. I thought this was a Pathfindererized product?

Well all my fears are cast aside now, I've been told in a few hours I will have the finalized manuscript for adventure one of The Gift. I will do a spectacular page layout and it should be released for publication towards the end of this week, maybe as early as Wednesday.

Papa - I know where you're coming from, but at least I didn't offer a pre-order for the product, since this is my first product, I needed to understand the workflow better, to be able to successfully predict a release time.

I'm glad everyone appreciate the maps I created for this project and you can be sure the text portion of the adventure has that much attention to detail as well, to create the best possible product I can.

Looking forward to making the official announcement!

Michael "GP" Tumey

PS: despite what is said on D5 forum, I've stuck to my Pathfinder guns and insured it follows that ruleset throughout, rather than strictly 3.5 - its posted as 3.5 as this was posted prior to the release of Pathfinder and the compatability license prevented us from officially announcing it as a Pathfinder product, until Pathfinder was officially out.

Glad it is a going well, looking forward to seeing it :)

Count me anxious as well. I've been looking forward to this one for a while. Here's hoping for an update.

Me three ;-)

Kaidan: a Japanese Ghost Story setting's first installment: The Gift: Part 1 is now officially released. Dementia 5 Publishing and Gamer Printshop has made this PDF module available at the Paizo Store.

Its been a long time getting this out there, hurdles of being a first time publisher, I think. It features 13 full color maps, cover art by Jan Pospisil, interior art by Mark Hyzer and Simon Turnbull, co-written by Mcihael K. Tumey, Andy Champagne and Andrew Chirgwin. There's over 50 pages including an introduction to the setting, a beastiary of those new monsters featured in the adventure and much more.

I hope you like my attempt of imitating Paizo Publishing's high production values!

Give it a try, it should have a low price, $2.99 retail for the first 30 days then going up to $5.99 after that (not including discounts for members purchasing at the Paizo store.)

Edit: its currently being formatted for the Paizo Store and will be available shortly.

Michael "GP" Tumey

Michael,
Great job on The Gift, Part 1. My gaming group has just converted all of our ongoing campaigns to Pathfinder. I have previously run Japanese adventures and am excited about using an actually "Pathfinder-based" format for my Japanese campaign. I'm anxious to see Part 2 & 3 and hopefully many more contributions to the world of Kaidan!
Vaughan

Good or bad feedback - let me know how your experience with The Gift: Part 1 went for your group, so I can ensure the best quality in the modules that follow.

I am also looking at creating a free quarterly gazeteer PDF download containing maps, side adventures, NPCs, new monsters, perhaps new skills/feats/spells, maybe a printable tile set, etc.

I still can't find it. Is it up yet?

Thanks, Steve!

Paizo OK'd it, said I could start selling it and that they would format it for the Paizo Store - so, I don't know what that means, or how long it will take, but any day now, I hope.

At the risk of being niggling, this is up now, but it looks like the price is a dollar more than previously announced (per above, emphasis mine). Could we get clarification or correction on this point?

Its $3.99, I guess. The publisher goofed again, by telling me the wrong numbers, not surprising, since I just got clarification from Vic Wertz that the publisher goofed on the release date for the Paizo Store, but now that's been corrected as well. Then on November 15, the price goes up to $7.99 (which is my originally mentioned sale price a month ago.)

The Gift: Part 1 is now selling in the Paizo Store.

Hopefully, these are only first-timer mistakes, and that we might get more accurate as time moves forward (fingers crossed).

Thanks for the bump!
