Best way to protect mount's mind

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I've got a paladin who fights mounted. He can make his saves pretty reliably but when his mount gets dominated, confused, etc., it's a real pain in the keister. Any thoughts about an item he can buy for his horsey to keep it protected?

Undead horses never waver.

Are you remembering to add the bonus from devotion, assuming you are at least 6th level?

Devotion (Ex): An animal companion gains a +4 morale bonus on Will
saves against enchantment spells and effects.

Also take the feat Iron will for an extra +2 on its will save.

Once you get to 11th level it gains the celestial template and spell resistance. It is also considered a Magical Beast and as such is not affected by spells targeting animals anymore.

Another thing you can do is cast protection from evil on your mount. Share spell can allow you to cast other spells on your mount even if they normally do not affect it because of type.

All this is assuming you are using the divine bond for a mount. If you are not high enough to get a paladins mount then you will probably just have to deal with it until then.

Since the mount is not a humanoid it will generally require higher level spells to affect it. Dominate person does not work on a mount, but dominate monster would. Likewise a charm monster is going to be required instead of a charm person.

Taking a level of Nature Oracle might be more of an investment than you want, but it would let you take Friend to the Animals as a revelation to add your CHA bonus to all saves for animals within 30 feet of you. The Nature's Whispers revelation also lets you add CHA in place of DEX to CMD and AC, it can be a nifty splash for a paladin.

EDIT: Oops, missed you were specifically asking about items. Oh well, still a possibly option, I suppose.

Liberty's Edge

I believe the shining knight archetype for paladins allows the mount to also benefit from the paladin's divine grace (his charisma to it's saves).

Before you take Iron Will take Extra Item Slot (Shoulders) and equip it with a cloak of resistance. I also second the Nature Oracle dip.

The problem with the Oracle of nature is that it, it slows down the progression of the mount. He can take the revelation that gives him the mount but that means he is spending more resources (either dipping more levels or using a feat) to maintain his mount. Also the oracle levels do not count towards the mount getting the celestial template. It also means his paladin abilities are also being delayed. What he would gain from a dip is not worth what he would have to give up.

Sorry, maybe I should emphasize: I'm looking for items to buy.

Wouldn't the horse be constantly staggered and smell like old shoes and sun baked garbage? I mean, it wouldn't get confused yeah but..

How are you supposed to eat your horse when you're tragically out of supplies. Nope, undead is definitely not the way to go.

Skeletal horse some of that. Not the food part...

Use the mount spell instead.

Only if it's a zombie. Skeleton would work, still can't eat it though.

Fast zombie+gentle repose on the meat?

Dark Archive

Give it a wayfinder and a clear spindle ioun stone. Its slotless. Just need int to be 3 or better to use the ioun stone.

How about getting a Phantom Steed? At CL14, you get an all day mount that flies.

Have you thought of crafting a tinfoil hat?

I sense a problem with this tactic.

How about the paladin who multiclasses into shadowdancer? Wait, can you get a horse shadow that way?

In some cases a stone of alliance will help.

If the horse is just being used to move the paladin around and won't fight, making it invisible (there are many ways, I won't list them) will prevent it being targeted.

Edit: If you're made of money and can't wait for the horse to get its next feat, amber spindle ioun stones can provide a resistance bonus to saves.
