I honestly hope this doesn't rattle any cages, but am I the only one that finds the whole 'woman takes the man's name in marriage" thing a little weird and antiquated?
No.

It would be interesting to find out where and why in history this began. Any help?

Without doing any actual research, I would assume it comes from times when families were tribes/clans. When you married outside of the clan you became part of the new one and took that name. I'm also pretty sure that there were places where it was custom for the man to join the woman's clan and thus take her name.

And there are occasions today where the man takes the woman's name, or in the instance of all those famous folks where they both keep their own names.

Personally, I don't see how a couple could see themselves as one family if they don't share the name, but that's just me.

My wife kept her name. I support her desicion

I have had doctors named Dr. Trust and Dr. Ram. My dad has worked with, on occasion, people named Bruce Bruce, Chuck Steak, and Dick Sprinkle.

I knew a girl named Ashley who married a guy whose last name was ... Ashley. So now she's Ashley Ashley.

I really think I would have hyphenated with my maiden name, at least. I mean, I assume Bruce Bruce was victimized by his parents, but she chose the name.

Similarly, I knew a girl named Amy who married a guy whose last name was Amy. Yep, just like that...Amy Amy, and she has a lot of fun with it.

I also know a Linda Hand. And then there's the famous Texan twins, Ima and Yura Hogg.

BTW...I think a wife taking her husband's name is a good thing.

Here is the charming story of the impending wedding of Kelly Hildebrandt to.....Kelly Hildebrandt. I guess they will have no trouble deciding if the wife should take the husband's name. She already has it.

Then they'll have a daughter and a son, both will be named Kelly, and MTV will put them on a reality show Life with the Kellys and all will good. 'Til they become unemployeed and have to get jobs with kelly Services.

My brother went to school with a girl whose last name was Lear, her first name was Crystal, and her middle name Chanda. I kid you not. Her younger sister had an equally silly name, but fortunately I have blocked it from my mind.

In collge, there was a guy on my floor, his name was Steven Rodgers... football player, ROTC guy and he had no clue who Captain America was.

We decided that was cool, Captain America would not read comics.

I grew up with a lot of Vietnamese kids, and have to say small Texas towns and names like Fuk, Duc, Long and Dong have to be hard to grow up with.

The toughest Hispanic kids in the neighboring high school was named Domingo Flores. "Aww, how cute, Sunday Flowers!" "*punch!*"

Edit: See, the boards don't even like a legitimate name. ;)
