Tonight we lost Harn Bonesteel, dwarven Barbarian 2.

Within the depths of the The Refuge of Nethys, Harn charged the accused Haidar while ragesing. Under the effects of the breath of Nethys Hard held the beast back two full rounds while so inflicted. He was brought low and lay bleeding upon the craven floor for two rounds while his companions looked on unable to make to reach him until to late.

The party Killed Haidar then broke apart the decaying Barq of Nethys to make a pyre for the fallen dwarf. Sadly the mold speaker is now dead and his weapon lays forgotten wrapped with in a cloth back in the party's room

After having bravely fought their way through the battle market our beloved Barbarian the 1/2 orc Pac was cut down by Kardswaan and his mighty Greataxe.

The party is frantically scrounging up money and selling weapons, see punching dagger from set piece, in order to bring our hero back from the dead. Figure they just wrapped up the first part why the hell not let them take the first 2 weeks and work this out since they really want to bring back Pac.

My group decided that they would scout out the Old Shrine when they first were given the choice to go where they please to explore / scout around their destination.

I Will not be posting a Obit for a PC Rather for an NPC who was so horribly demolished by a party of lvl 2s he should have TPKed its embarrassing.

The crushing of haidar, Cause - Tangelfoot bag:

As the group entered the room from the wrong end, Haidar stood atop his "hallucinatoryly grandiose barge" and Told the adventurers he would not let them have his families treasures. Jumping down he failed a jump check took damage then changed into Werelepord form. that was his first turn. The next to go was the groups Fighter. Tanglefoot bag to the FACE. Haidar rolled a 1 and auto-failed. the group proceeded to poke the shit out of him from afar using 2 long spears a scorpion whip and Magic form our arcane caster. It took them 5 rounds just before the tanglefoot wore out a final killing blow ended Haidar's suffering.

He never got to attack ANYONE.

4 lvl 2 PC's dominated a CR5 encounter.

Book 3 the jackals price One source warehouse

The group minus two characters (Catfolk ranger was sick and the dwarf cleric had found another way in.) Decided to try and sneak in to the one source warehouse through a skylight but before doing that decided to create a diversion by blowing up all the warehouse doors.

The distraction worked a little to well Gaining the attention of 10 one source thugs who all came into the room one of which spotted them climbing down needless to say a swirling melee ensured that only got worse for them when the bard, the wizard and two coacatices got involved. the party members dropped one by one Luckily for them they were all just beat down into negatives and the thugs decided they wanted prisoners to interrogate so they were carted off to the dungeon. (which ironicly meant the main part of the plan to get into the warehouse worked just not the way they planned.)

Party:

Aldadlon (wood elf ranger 2)
Ibrahim (human favored soul 2)
Athraig (gray elf wizard 2)

Refusing any assitance from the guards, the party set off to investigate the ruins and deal with the obvious gnoll threat. Managing to sneak up along the river, they ambushed a patrol of 4 gnolls and made short work of them. Confidence bolstered, they began exploring the largest building nearby.

Upon entering, a huge snake lunged forward and they found themselves overwhelmed. Given the size of the beast, fleeing was difficult as it guarded the doorway with its reach. Aldadlon used both his weapons and every ounce of ability (action points) to ensure victory. Ibrahim struck at the snake with his magic staff, and expending his healing to keep himself and Aldadlon alive. Athraig used his 5th level wand of magic missile several times, and then grew worried about wasting charges.

Athraig switched to his heavy crossbow and began loading it. As he finished, Aldadlon fell unconscious. Ibrahim attempted to heal him but the snake distracted him and he lost his spell. Athraig fired at the snake and missed. Ibrahim attempted to heal Aldadlon again, but was bitten and struck dead. Athraig switched back to his wand but it was too late. The snake bit him and he succumbed to its poison.

The mamba had a delicious dinner of elves and humans, and several days later the gnolls discovered their remains and cackled with glee.

I don't think it was such a foregone conclusion. Consider the following:

The adventure suggests the PCs should hit 3rd level after exploring much of Kelmarane. They had just entered the ruins. They had more XP than a normal party as there were only 3 of them.

The giant mamba is a tough CR 3, but rates as "Very Difficult" for 3 2nd level characters.

These 2nd level characters had:

  • Rolled ability scores, average point-buy value was 38.
  • Bonues items: 5th level wand of magic missile, adamantine scimitar, ring of feather fall.
  • Campaign traits.
  • Use of most splatbooks.

Finally, they overheard the gnolls talking about "who had to feed the beast in that building as it has killed many of us" and they still went in with no prep.

Frankly, throw all this together with the fact they did not fight intelligently and they got what they deserved.

  • TPK in house of the the beast:

Dusk Finger: Human Vudrani Monk/ Rogue Level 3/3
Alena StarBright: Human Keleshitie Female Paladin Of Sarenae Level 5
Gnash GnollBiter : Gnome Barbarian Level 4 (previous character was a half elf ranger that was killed by Kardswann)
HulHammer The Mighty: Dwarf Bard/Druid level 3/2 (going for mystic theurge)

Our biggest issue was a serious lack of spellcasting!!

WE never even finished legacy of fire (ie made a new group) just waited until Council of Theives came out.

Having just escaped from Kakishon, the party found they were in an oppressively hot chamber made of burnished brass, with curtains of flame serving as doors to the north, south, east and west. Before more detailed examinations could be performed, a brass man strode forth from each flame curtain to confront the intruders. A rogue the party had picked up found his best chance at contributing to the fight would be to tumble behind the nearest brass man, through the flaming curtain, in order to flank and sneak-attack. Sadly, his attempt resulted in four brass men appearing in the chamber he had just entered. This is where Kito decided to "help." He went through the curtain himself, which created four more brass men (8 in the room with them total, 4 back in the starting chamber). Unable to retreat, he was quickly cut down by the emotionless guardians.

    The rogue survived.

Other PCs, all 2nd level: Paladin, Cleric, Wizard and Rogue

The afternoon of the 2nd day after clearing the monastery, the adventurers had finished clearing out the old temple to Nethys. They had just gotten back to the monastery when they saw six gnolls drag a human out into the fields, light a fire and start to torture him. Rushing to save the prisoner, Nolan (gnoll killer feat and favored enemy gnoll) charged right in ahead of the group.

My dice were hot, in two rounds he went to -14 and that is with max hit points. They saved the captive and buried Nolan back at the monastery.

Catching up on the last six sessions or so by posting my party's three deaths.

    Tessara Wyrdon, Elven Fighter 4
    Morgrym Stonefist, Dwarven Fighter 6
Mervi Busharcher, Halfling Sorceror 6, Moldspeaker

Tessara fell in the ruins of Kelmarane to the Peryton as the group opted to split up, letting the three stealthier members scout the area while the others remained back at the monastery to heal. The Peryton, about to bed down for its sleep cycle, performed a brief aerial circuit to check for immediate threats before lowering its guard, and spied the unlucky elf (but not the halfling ranger or tiefling rogue). As the Peryton swept in, the other two opted to remain hidden during the first round, only joining the combat when Tessara began losing the fight. The next round saw her take a crit and two hits, ending poor Tessara's heroic stand.

Morgrym met his end at the Carrion King's axe. Enlarged and strengthened by the party's theurge, he strode confidently toward the lord of carrion, only to drop to negatives by the demon-gnoll's onslaught. The theurge was able to bring him back to consciousness two rounds later, and Morgrym heroically ignored his wounds to take an opportunistic attack on the advancing King. His foolhardy act proved his last as the Carron King sunk his axe deep into the dwarf.

Mervi's end came in the Pit of Screaming Ghosts, and was the product of the fear inducing moans of the Edimmu in conjunction with the dangerous conditions of the area. Seeking to escape the apparitions, Mervi leapt down to the treasure strewn floor below only to discover (to his horror, pun intended) the green slime that lay beneath the water's surface. Stranded from his allies, he suffered the caustic slime's burn for three rounds, clinging to the side of a pillar in an attempt at getting back up to his friends. Just as it seemed he'd be saved by the party's wizard, the last Edimmu was shot by Kyoll, the party rogue, causing it to implode and drain the life of all within 20 ft. Including poor Mervi. His con already drastically lowered by the caustic sludge, Mervi was unable to fend off the unearthly energies and subsequently died at -4 hp (4 con). The legendary axe Tempest also was lost in this encounter, as it had fallen into the slimy water and dissolved, unattended.

Part 1 of the AP seems pretty tame, as long as your party doesn't split up or do other dumb things. Part 2, on the other hand, appears positively deadly.

Near TPK--Party of Dwarves all 16th Lvl, Paladin, Ranger, Dragonfire Adept, CLeric, and Sorcerer.

Polished of the final chapter without much of a problem, the Paladin charged Javhul and was promptly killed, rest of the party cleaned up the mess, although the Ranger was nearly killed as well. The Paladin was brought back with a Wish from Nefeshti and they set about celebrating their victory with a huge party that lasted well into the morning.

Then I had Xotani awake and attack the city. I gave the PCs all their abilities (spells/smites/lay on hands) back and allowed them to cast any prep spells they wanted. The party did a pretty poor job of prepping, but I'm not sure it would have made that much of a difference. Xotani pretty much wiped them out, the Paladin and Ranger were toast when their weapons melted, the Cleric got swallowed and died as did the Paladin eventually. The Ranger had Freedom of Movement so he died the old fashion way. DFA and Sor fled when the other 3 dropped and they had taken a boat load of damage. The Sorcerer had some really poor rolls to overcome SR, but still, the 40 regeneration made it really tough.

The group was bummed, and talking about what they were going to do, then I told them it was all a dream, a vision sent by Torag about what would have been the price of their failure. I had planned this from the beginning so it wasn't a cop out to save the PCs. Xotani is somewhat higher than a CR 20 IMO, that weapon melting ability is just hateful. I'd put him somewhere around CR 22-24. In any case we all had a blast fighting this Epic monster, and the party is off to the Eye of Abendago to dump Xotani's heart. There they will encounter an Epic Water Elemental and receive a seal to Tar-Baphon's prison in exchange for the heart, but that is another story.....

The players thought the Old Shrine would be a good, second location to scout the town and headed there directly after the monastery. Volume: 1, Howl of the Carrion King
    Where: Outside the Battle Market.

The party had been doing very well at this point. So well that they were near enough to hear that fighter get tortured by the few remaining gnolls of the Kulldis tribe. So they slaughtered the gnolls, but as they were trying to pull up the stakes (I gave a DC 15 for each stake) he got his head blown off by the gnoll ranger I put in the watchtower using a dragon rifle using his hyenas for cover. He was taken out eventually byt he rogue that used the palace roof for cover and the grappling monk that actually lifted one of the hyenas and used it as a shield as he charged the gnoll ranger.

The rifle I conveniently used to call back to a previous one-shot adventure, Dungeon's "The Distraction". The rifle belonged to the Imperial calvary ranger that went all Butch and Sundance on the gnoll army to provide cover for the other escaping PC's. The players loved it.

Fredren, Level 2 Factotum with Finding Haleen and Pesh dealer traits. Howl of the carrion King.

After observing Kelmarane for a day they decided to approach closer and ambused a gnoll patrol. One gnoll escaped and informed the others.
Then they decided to ambush another patrol kill 3 gnolls and leave 1 for questioning. The next patrol however rolled very high in their spot checks and easily escaped.
Fearing retaliation they observed Kelmarane again and noticed that the gnolls sent another goat to the Mill, but didn't seem to do much else.

Foolishly (IMO) they set their ambush in the exact same spot. 3 of the party members remained in full cover and only Fredren remained normally hidden about 30 feet from the rest of the party. Sure enough the gnoll patrol came and began approaching nearer and nearer. Fredren was about to initiate the ambush when a huge shadow came upon him.

The Peryton rolled 1 in his charge in the surprize round.
The first round it brought Fredren at 2 hp and second it hit him for 12 points of damage...

The party barely avoided a TPK and managed to kill the peryton and chase off the gnolls.

Then Arsham (Crusader) remembered he could easily do subdual damage with the Blade of Mercy campaign trait...

Name: Hrothgar Shoanti Clr4; Madhue Human Wiz4; Fronan Hobbit Rog4
Volume: 1, Howl of the Carrion King
    Where: Under the church
Catalyst: Xulthos is a bad mother - shut your mouth!

The party finds Xulthos' lair, he makes his speech and the party charges in. Hrothgar buffs, casts enlarge person on himself and then moves for Xulthos. Xulthos takes the huge barbarian now carrying Kardswan's axe to be a serious threat and unloads all five attacks on him taking him to -3.

Most of the rest of the party is confused by Xulthos' wings and a call to retreat is raised. The party druid slides in and heals Hrothgar back to 3 in hopes he can get out. Being the wild man he is, Hrothgar decides not to retreat but instead picks up his axe and swings while prone. He misses and Xulthos finishes him off.

The party has retreated to the hallway with Xulthos in hot pursuit. Fronan ducks into an alcove to try and hide but it doesn't fool Xulthos. Fronan takes one bite from the beast and then screams out "I'll be your slave! I'll be your slave!". "Fine," Xulthos replies. He turns from the tiny hobbit and charges Madhue the wizard. Crit, confirmed, dead wizard.

The rest of the party has fled the cavern at this point and I allow them to pull the interdiction key out, sealing Xulthos and the hobbit in. The hobbit tells Xulthos he can get him out of this trap. They go to the door and Fronan beats on the door frantically begging to be let out. "Where's the monster," the PCs on the safe side of the door ask? Fronan fails his bluff check and the PCs refuse to let him out.

Xulthos allows Fronan to search the upper level in hopes of finding some other way out - though he's sure there isn't one. Fronan retrieves the elemental gem and the necklace of fireballs though he has idea what they are.

He breaks the gem, summoning the large fire elemental. Realizing this may be his only change, he orders the elemental to attack Xulthos. The two of them exchange blows for a few rounds, Fronan does a backstab or two, and things are looking desperate.

Fronan snatches the large pearl from the necklace and throws it at Xulthos. Not sure who was more surprised when it burst into a fireball. Xulthos, furious, promises the hobbit a slow and painful death as the beast finally kills the elemental. With his last chance, Fronan throws the entire necklace at Xulthos. Only his resistance saves him. With only 6 hit points left, Xulthos bites the head off Fronan, breaking his promise.

    Liberty's Edge

    Wow, fantastic Fronan story!

Hehe. My team used that necklace on Ghartok in THotB. A valiant effort by the hobbit! Did the rest of the party hear the explosions and take their opportunity? Xulthos at 6 hp is too tantalizing to ignore!

When Fronan came to the door with Xulthos and failed to bluff his way out, the other PCs left to tell Almah what had happened. Xulthos still lives and the PCs feel they cannot possibly handle him. Almah will have to spend some of her limited coin to bring in a specialist to deal with Xulthos.

A failed diplomacy roll upstairs, and another one downstairs, and the fight was on.

The Shaitan leader (I forget his name) and Janus traded blows with adamantine weapons for several turns, before the falchion landed true on a confirmed critical, dropping the paladin to -33 hp.

Luckily, the critter had been damaged enough to allow the alchemist and witch to finish him off.

Janus came back as an Ork, thanks to the party witch's Reincarnate.

    Got another one!

Marcus Trueblood, Tiefling Fighter 11, Bayt Al-Bazaan

Emerging from the stairwell leading up from the vaults and into the Reliquary, the party found itself ambushed by a veritable swarm of fire elementals. Marcus, ever one to prove his martial talent, swung the greatsword Zenzirad in a sweeping arc that slew 4 large elementals simultaneously. The rest of his party struck with fury, destroying 4 medium, 2 large, and 7 small elementals, leaving only the two huge elementals and their leader, an elder elemental left. As the three tremendous creatures of fire bore down on the party's mage, Marcus stepped in to gather the beasts attention, and gather it he did. All three beasts turned to the fighter and unleashed a total of six powerful slams that resulted in over 150 damage issued at once. This proved too much for the stalwart fighter, who succumbed to his wounds that very moment.

After the party ended the fight and rested up (to change their spell selection), the druid performed a reincarnation for mighty Marcus. The roll ended up 100, GM's choice! The deities, seeing Marcus's death as an opportunity, returned him to the world of the living in the form of a female Aasimar, perhaps as punishment for his previous life, perhaps as a chance at redemption.

R.I.P. Musab, Human Bard lvl 3
    Howl of the Carrion King

Day three after taking the Monastery found Musab and his compainions sharing breakfast with some of Almah's Mercenaries and Dashki. After noticing that Daski's staff was missing its dead pugwampi adornment the adventurers confronted him. After the discussion turned ugly, Dashki, very much afraid of the cruel Paladin Hussein, admitted to nocturnal wanderings and his loss of the pugwampi in the pesh fields north of the monastery. While the others spoke with Almah on the town of Kelmarane and their further suspicions of Dashki, Musab took it upon himself to investigate the pesh fields to confirm or deny Dashki's story.

Coming upon a clearing Musab spotted the pugwampi hanging from a prickly cactus, dangling form its cheap rope. It was then that the Earth opened below him and he fell into the maw of a giant beast. The dust digger proceeded to Gnaw him to pieces and swallow him whole. The other adventurers thought to look for Musab, as he was gone for while. As they got closer to the fields they heard his last scream before being swallowed. They ran towards the noise only to find a blood splattered depression in a clearing being watched over by the eyeless corpse of a lone pugampi bearing a rotted-lipped smirk.

Wow dude, that was kinda harsh on Musab. He really had no chance of surviving the dust digger.

Then again another example of why you should "never split the party" EVER!

    Nicely described though.

As the party druid shirked his duty in the face of the giant attack, Aldriana (the party wizard) made a tactical misstep, foiling Kyoll's initial salvo with a poorly timed Wall of Force (foiled Kyoll's readied action by preventing the trigger). Kyoll engaged the giant first at range, exchanging a brief salvo of arrows and rocks before the two crossed blades while the party dealt with the giant's mate. The creature's first two strikes brought Kyoll to death's door, inflicting grievous wounds, but it seemed her compatriots would arrive in time, as the giant across the room fell to Marcuette's (formerly Marcus) blade.

Alas, Aldriana compounded her prior poor decision with another: making the fighter invisible, and so as Marcuette charged in and sundered the giant's blade, Kyoll remained the only viable target. The giant delivered a pair of slams to the heavily wounded Kyoll, crushing the life from her before succumbing to the fighter's retribution. A reincarnation saw the rogue brought back to life in the form of a halfling, but Kyoll, ever vain, was displeased. As the party's majority rested, she hurried back to the room where Shazathared, marid princess was bound, and struck a deal for the marid's yearly wish. Kyoll returned to her life as a tiefling, and vowed to assist the marid in escaping her bonds in exchange.

That's five. We'll see how many more tallies I'll make before this bloody affair is over. Of the original party, two characters remain and only one of them hasn't been slain at least once...

    SPECIAL ABILITIES
    Blindsight (Ex)
Xotani can “see” by emitting high-frequency sounds, inaudible to most other creatures, that allow it to ascertain objects and creatures within 120 feet. A silence spell negates this ability, but its other forms of vision prevent it from being utterly blinded.

Breath Weapon (Su) Once every 1d4 rounds.

Firebleed (Ex) As a creature of living fire and wrath, Xotani ferociously strikes back against any creature that wounds it. Any attack that does more than 10 points of damage to Xotani causes the wound to erupt in a 30-foot cone of magma. This cone deals 1d6 fire damage plus an additional 1d6 fire damage for every 10 points of damage dealt by the attack. Thus, an attack dealing 49 points of damage to Xotani results in a cone dealing 5d6 points of fire damage. Creatures affected by the cone may make a DC 43 Reflex save to take only half damage. The save DC is Constitution-based. Ranged attacks and any magical attacks that deal damage also cause this special ability to take effect. Xotani cannot firebleed at will, but might do so up to 10 times per round (an amount equal to its Constitution modifier).

Frightful Presence (Su) Xotani unsettles its foes with its mere presence. Any creatures with fewer HD than Xotani that come within 60 feet and witness Xotani’s charge or attack must make a successful DC 35 Will save or become shaken, remaining in that condition for 5d6 rounds or for as long as they remain within 60 feet of Xotani, whichever lasts longer. Any creature that succeeds on its save is immune to Xotani’s frightful presence for 24 hours. This is a mind-affecting fear effect. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Grab (Ex) Only works against Gargantuan and smaller opponents.

Heat (Ex) Xotani generates so much heat that its mere touch deals an additional 4d8 points of fire damage. Creatures grappling Xotani or striking it with melee weapons, natural weapons, or unarmed strikes are subject to this damage, but creatures striking with reach melee weapons do not take damage from its heat. This heat can melt or char weapons; any weapon that strikes Xotani takes 4d8 fire damage (Fort DC 43 half). The save DC is Constitution-based.

Light Blindness (Ex) Xotani is blinded for 1 round if exposed to bright light, such as sunlight (but not a daylight spell). It is dazzled as long as it remains in areas of bright light.

Regeneration (Ex) No form of attack deals lethal damage to Xotani—it regenerates even if disintegrated or slain by a death effect. If Xotani fails a save against an effect that would kill it instantly, it rises from death 3 rounds later with 1 hit point if no further damage is inflicted on its remains. It can be banished or otherwise transported as a means to save a region, but Xotani can be slain only by raising its nonlethal damage total to its full normal hit points +30 (or 805 hit points), at least half of which must be inflicted by cold damage, and using a wish or miracle spell to keep it dead.

If Xotani loses a limb or body part, the lost portion regrows in 1d6 minutes (the detached piece dies and decays normally). Xotani can reattach the severed member instantly by holding it to the stump.

Swallow Whole (Ex) If Xotani begins its turn with an opponent grappled in its mouth (see Grab), it can attempt a new combat maneuver check (as though attempting to pin the opponent). If it succeeds, it swallows its prey, and the opponent takes bite damage. The opponent can be Gargantuan or smaller. Being swallowed causes a creature to take 2d8+9 bludgeoning damage each round. A swallowed creature keeps the grappled condition, while the swallowing behir does not. A swallowed creature can try to cut its way free with any light slashing or piercing weapon (AC 24, DR 15/epic, 77 hp), or it can just try to escape the grapple. If a swallowed creature cuts its way out, Xotani cannot use swallow whole again until the damage is healed. If the swallowed creature escapes the grapple, success puts it back in Xotani’s mouth, where it may be bitten or swallowed again.

Trample (Ex) As a full-round action, Xotani can attempt to overrun any Gargantuan or smaller creature. This works just like the overrun combat maneuver, but Xotani does not need to make a check, it merely has to move over opponents in its path. Targets of a trample take 2d8+21 damage. Targets can make an attack of opportunity, but at a –4 penalty. If targets forgo an attack of opportunity, they can attempt to avoid the trampling creature and receive a DC 32 Reflex save to take half damage. Xotani can deal trampling damage to each target only once per round, no matter how many times its movement takes it over a target creature.

Wow, I forgot how nasty he was, since I read it about a year ago. My guys are midway through Chapter 4 now so I've prepared Chapter 5 completely. I won't be detailed preparing Chapter 6 till they get into Chapter 5, and this helps a lot!!!

    Name: Cla'vin
    Race: Human Tani
    Class: Rogue
    Level: 5
Catalyst: Not heeding DM hints, Fellow Players Not Paying Attention
Where: The Warrens, Weak Floor, House of the Beast

DM explains to the player that the floor looks very weak where Blobog was hiding. Decides to go in anyways. DM asks for percentile roll and mentions the creaking floor. Player makes the roll but decides to keep moving into the room. Second percentile check fails, the floor collapses. Being the kindly DM I am, I gave the player a reflex 20 save to grab the ledge which he succeeds at.

Cla'vin is now hanging from the broken floor, the slavering Unchosen below. Cla'vin wins initiative but fails the DC25 climb check to get up. One of the Unchosen closes, jumps, and hits Cla'vin for 12 points. DM rules that it's a 10 + damage climb check to hold on, which Cla'Vin fails. Cla'vin falls into the Unchosen and is ripped apart.

The other players look down into the hole and decide, "no way are we going down there."

10 minutes later, the person playing the monk says "Oh, I should have gone in there. I've got the egg-shell walk so the floor wouldn't have collapsed for me." Oops.

    The Exchange

    Name: Richard
    Race: Human Chelaxian
    Class: Paladin
    Level: 3
    Catalyst: Dire Boar, gnoll totem
Where: Reclaiming the village from the gnolls

Friend's character decided upon finding the dire boar to stand toe to toe slugging it out with the swine. None of the rest of the party can do much to help (no reach weapons and the few times a bow was used, it missed horribly). Instead the remaining party members, an inquisitor and a cleric, spent the rounds healing Richard. Many a cure lights and more were used...

Richard doing many a damage to the boar but it still stood its ground owing to its darn ferocity, it was alive and kicking when it should have dropped. Finally, the boar rolls a crit and with the exceptional damage rolls by the GM, poor Richard (who was only a little bit down from full hp) went down he goes past the negative cons into dead as a doornail. The kicker is the dire boar comes roaring out and the cleric going next has an attack that kills the boar.

He really should have stepped back and let us all have a shot at damaging it or something. Instead, the player got caught up in it and just stood in the doorway. The group name, the Holy Rollers, as we were all good followers of Imodea(?), is no more as we picked up the replacement character, a chaotic barbarian, coveniently located in the next building over.

    Iomedae.

That was a deserved pk if ever I heard about one. Tactics and good teamwork first, glory after.

Wow dude, that was kinda harsh on Musab. He really had no chance of surviving the dust digger.

Then again another example of why you should "never split the party" EVER!

    Nicely described though.

True, kinda harsh, but I specifically asked the player twice "Are you sure you are going out into the desert alone? And twice he said yes, so I don't feel too bad. I mean I could have chimed in and said "Hey don't be an idiot, NEVER go out into the desert alone" but I wasn't quite that comfortable with that much meta-gamery. The player rolled a wizard for his next class, and it has worked out well for the party, so its all good. :)

    Name: Malone
    Race: Human Tani
    Class: Ftr
    Level: 5
    Catalyst: Being a Hero
Where: House of the Beast, Carrion Pit

Zaifyd is waiting for the party when they emerge from The Stone Speakers and a gnoll is holding the hostage Amwyr next to the pit. Combat breaks out and Amwyr is immediately tossed into the pit as a lure for the centipede Thkot Tal.

Simon the party fighter jumps into the pit and heads for the old man. Malone bravely decides to hold off the beast so they can escape. Malone makes a leap to get close to the centipede but fails miserably, falling prone 10' short of the beast.

Thkot Tal gets off one round of attacks before Malone can even get up. All Malone can do is crawl to the beast and get off one attack. The centipede then kills him.

(This would be the third death for this player. His previous character, Cla'vin, died in the House of the Beast. Malone, one of the escaped slaves, was the replacement. Malone died without every leaving the House.)

The revolving door of death spins yet again.

Marcuette Trueblood, Aasimar Fighter 12, Bayt Al-Bazaan courtyard.

The party, having received a tip from the man in the mirror, opted to enact a plan to try and locate the key to the eye. They backtracked through the palace's kitchens and gardens to the bull topped ziggurat in the open courtyard. As they exited the palace's front doors, a shadow flitted across the group, and as they looked up they saw the form of an adult red dragon lazily looping around the building's parapets.

Some may question the wisdom of engaging a dragon in conditions favorable to it with no plan or forewarning, but my group proved confident, possibly beyond their means, and began preparation for the coming battle. Aberzjarax notices this, and casts a spell or two himself, wheeling to keep the mages in sight for spellcraft purposes. The fight begins when Kyoll fires the first shot, the arrow falling beneath the beast's flight due to range. They trade spells and miss with more arrows, as the party slowly ascends to engage the dragon at similar altitude. Marcuette, ever the tactician, prepares a charge that interrupts the dragon's strafing runs. The dragon activates an item it wears, receives a full attack from the stalwart fighter (single hit, two misses) then disassembles the outmatched Aasimar with 6 successive attacks that inflict over 150 damage.

The party, in the face of the dragon's anger, paused only long enough to retrieve the body before fleeing back to the dubious safety of the palace proper. Marcuette was reincarned as a Male Drow and reclaimed his original name of Marcus Trueblood.

The most amazing part of all this? They were ready to side with Ezer Hazzebaim against the dragon not an hour later, despite the dragon demanding their assistance in apprehending the man. I was shell-shocked!

    Name: Aang
    Race: Human

    Where: Big Bronze Giant
Catalyst: Being able to "Breath of Life" while still being threatened.

    Name: Fortinbras
    Race: Halfling
    Class: Oracle of Stone 14
    Where: Big Bronze Giant
Catalyst: Being primary healer and threatened by Huge axe wielding madman.

In our fight against the Bronze Giant, he quickly found out it was next to impossible to seriously hurt the Orc Paladin (Me). Once we engaged in close combat, he took to using that 15' reach to really lay into our normally second rank combatants.

With one round of attacks, he managed to drop the Oracle to something like -85 or so HP. Aang, closeby, was able to cast, move, and resuscitate the halfling with Breath of Life, before our Witch was able to Heal him back to full HP. He did take a mighty swing on the movement-provoked AoO on the way in, though.

Unable to finish off the Oracle that round and still deal with the Aang, he redirected his axe onto our poor, unarmored Cleric. One confirmed crit and 2 other hits put him at about -120 hp or so, well beneath the threshold of Breath of Life to save him.

He was Reincarnated as a Kobold afterwards.

    Name: Lezard
    Race: Human
    Class: Alchemist 14
    Where: The Assassin's Hideout
    Catalyst: Assassin Death Attack + Nat 1 = :(

Once we had dealt with the above problem, we encountered a lone elf assassin, Spider Climbing on the wall and armed with a bow. In the surprise round, Lezard sprouted feathers from his chest, at the end of a brand new shortbow arrow clean through his heart.

Down the Alchemist (our 2nd highest damage dealer) and having to deal with a tricksy mean elf rogue, we managed to drop him, but not before some more scares with feinted sneak attacks.

Lezard came back Reincarnated as a Human, lucky duck.

Some poor rolls and after 4 rounds only 1 was dead and the other 2 had their fill leaving him at 1 con. Sadly he contracted filth fever from it and it struck 2 days later with him only having a 3 constitution. He rolled his fortitude and rolled a nat 1. The dice came up 3 con damage and he passed away vomiting in the night, a victim of the disease of the desert.... and on a side not, Filth fever? really? Wow, I've never killed a pc with filth fever before....
