Dopplegangers in Golarion...

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Under D&D of old, mindflayers and dopplegangers went together like PB&J (well, eeevillll PB&J). Since the facehuggers aren't OGL, has any new race taken over as the dopplegangers' preferred bosses in Golarion? Intellect devourers or neothelids or even aboleths (oh my!)?

Apologies if this has been covered before, but my search-fu failed me

Paizo Employee Creative Director

At this point, no. Dopplegangers are, in my opinion, better suited to BE the bosses, actually; their shapechanging power makes them a natural for the fake boss who sneaks into any organization, offs the leader, replaces him, then goes about changing that organization to serve its own ends.

Liberty's Edge

Uh-0h. Time to start asking the Paizo folks the Doppleganger Password!!! I knew it! James is a Doppleganger! Get him!

I agree with that wholeheartedly...

On the otherhand, I've been thinking that even among secret doppleganger cabals, there is always a risk of a double-agent. I'll bet somewhere in the Darklands, there is at least one enterprising young whipper-snapper of an intellect devourer who is raising a crop of dopplegangers as mounts:

Honest Al (intellect devourer): This right here is a nice fresh one... this year's model, brand new! It'll Change Shape from half-orc to human in 1 turn or less, guaranteed!
Stingy Pete (intellect devourer): I don't know, that's an awful lot of gold. Do you have a low-mileage used model? Preferably any color but grey?
