The main character is a new dad, dealing with being a new father, and most of it is told in flashback to his own childhood when he was about ten. At that time, he was living in a small Virginia college town and dealing with his own father's death. He has some issues, to say the least, and it's largely unclear whether they are psychological or supernatural in nature. As I said, very creepy at times, despite not being a 'horror' novel per se.

The writing is great, and very descriptive, despite being a first novel. It's the first novel that has struck me as just being really well written since I picked up "Snow Falling On Cedars" more than a few years ago, and I read alot.
