Coraline 'Claret' Chandrila |
Free action. Coraline shouts 'Lady Amie, Hans ! or any others who may be able to '
'There is a spellcaster up top I mean to get to, are there any protective spells you can cast on me so I can engage him without fear of losing my faculties ? ' Protection from Evil or some such ? Or maybe a Haste ?
Amie |
Amies ears perk when Coraline calls out her name. She noods at the womans request and calls out "I'll follow as closely as I can. I know a few prayers that will help you." She then calls to Neehan. "Please help her clear a path Neehan, she'll need my help more than those down here."

Getting too crowded to move; the hobs are yours!
Yurgan turns from the battle at the stairs and sprints next to the towering form of the minotaur. Careful not to open himself to the monster's attack, the dwarf makes several quick arcane gestures before delivering a shock to the beast.

You can't take a 5-foot step and a move action to move somewhere. The only move actions you can take in combination with a 5-foot step are things like drawing a weapon, loading a crossbow, etc., that don't require you to move to another square. However, I don't see any reason why you couldn't cast a touch spell in conjunction with a "charge" action. If you want to do that, you won't take an attack of opportunity from the hobgoblin in the doorway, because he's sort of got a wall in his way, but you would take the penalty to AC that a charge usually generates.

You're right, of course. The perils of posting late at night I'm afraid.
I considered such but a charge is a full-round action that doesn't allow for a spell to be cast, only a single melee attack. I'll need to come up with something else, but it'll have to wait until the morning; my mind's so frazzled tonight that it took me about an hour to compose the previous post.

Here's the battle map for round 4. I changed it over to Excel, since it's easier to make adjustments. I didn't know if everyone has Excel, though, so what I posted was a screen capture jpeg.
Did you try importing the spreadsheet to docs.google.com?
Neevan |
Amies ears perk when Coraline calls out her name. She noods at the womans request and calls out "I'll follow as closely as I can. I know a few prayers that will help you." She then calls to Neehan. "Please help her clear a path Neehan, she'll need my help more than those down here."
"Yes Master!" Neevan answered instinctively, not realizing what she said as she prepared to clear the path. The hobgoblin before her was where she had to start, as it was blocking the doorway. She inhaled deeply, tried to calm her mind, and unleashed a flurry of strikes at the hob's face and neck.

There isn't anywhere else to move at the moment since it's so crowded there. I'm hoping to drop this guy so I can move up with Coraline and take some of the pressure off of her.

For what it's worth, I have Excel.
22 Coraline ... 20 Tate - moves to L1 and wounds minotaur. 17 Neevan ... 17 Miho ...16 Bad guys (I'll wait until after Coraline and Yurgan post their actions before I do the bad guys).
15 Hans - moves back to K9;...)....15 Johnny ...
Benedetto is still act on 16, correct? And he'll act after the minotaur, correct?
Yurgan Durduum |
Yurgan breaks from the growing conflict centered on the stairs, unfurling a sheet of parchment as he turns toward the minotaur. As he recites the words on the scroll geometric designs begin etching themselves in the air next to the creature, growing until they solidify into the form of a bison. The summoned animal snorts once before sighting his foe and thrusting its horns toward the beast

The other set of rolls were so nice, too; here's hoping my divine bovine can do the trick.
Heaven's Agent |
The summoned creature come's at the end of the round (I think, I could be quite wrong) and if we're lucky and bring the minotaur down you may have to redirect the Heavenly Heffer's attack.
I had always thought so as well, but then again this is the first caster I've played that's paid much attention to summoning; I never realized it was such a nice spell, with the first two lines of the description stating:
This spell summons an extraplanar creature (typically an outsider, elemental, or magical beast native to another plane). It appears where you designate and acts immediately, on your turn.
I'll have to pay more attention to it in the future, though now that I think about it I don't know why I wasted one of my scrolls when I could have simply cast it using my bonded item. Oh well, something to remember for next time.
Yurgan Durduum |
It acts immediately after the 1 round casting time is complete. It doesn't act before the casting is even finished!
I can't believe I missed that; this isn't shaping up to be my best week, that's for sure. First job issues jobs, now more trouble completing a single turn of play than I've ever had. And it's only Wednesday ...
Let's see if I can't shake this funk I'm in:

That's what I meant when I said 'end of the round' (after casting) earlier, hogarth used better diction. And the very reason why the summoned creature may have to be redirecting its attack, because hopefully we can bring the minotaur down by then.
now that I think about it I don't know why I wasted one of my scrolls
I was wondering that too, I assumed you were planning to do something I was not privy to.
: )
By the way there is an OOC thread, Nightwish and the rest sorry for all the clutter here.

Finally, I can see the newer posts! For the last several days, I've only been able to see the posts made up until this past Tuesday! I don't know why, I've been online, and I've been able to connect to other websites, but this one wouldn't update for me. Any of you ever have that happen?

Yes, my bad, I had forgotten about your delayed action. So you do have another action this round.

You can still summon the bison if you want, it just wouldn't appear until your turn next round. But if you want to go with the lightning bolt, then the minotaur will fall this round. I won't even bother with making the save, because it will kill it even if it saved.

I haven't tried that yet. I will when I update the battle map. Right now I'm not at the computer that has all that stuff on it, so it'll have to wait until tomorrow.

In this case a summon next turn won't have much effect; the rest of the fighting on this floor's too crowded for it to do much besides get in the way after the minotaur's down. I'll stick with lightning bolt.

Here are the bad guys attacks for the last round (I've gotta run to my weekly Sunday game across the river, but I'll post the updated battlemap this evening):
Hob on Neevan: the hobgoblin before you bunches his shoulders in rage and bellows a deafening roar at you (Barbarian rage power "Intimidating Glare"). He makes the DC roll exactly, so you are shaken (-2 on attacks, saves, skill and ability checks) for the next few rounds. Wielding his longsword as a 2-handed weapon, he brings the blade down in a dangerous arc, but misses as you nimbly sidestep the blow.
Hob on Coraline: attempting the same sort of intimidation that his fellow hob managed on Neevan, this one only succeeds in looking cartoonish in the attempt. Still, he turns his blade, wielded as a two-handed weapon, and attempts a power attack on Coraline, hitting with a natural 20, but not critting, for 1d8+12=15 damage.
The hob in G10 moves to H9 and also attacks Coraline (I shouldn't have put the dire wolf in that spot yet, because it won't actually appear until Hans' initiative, which comes after the hobs' actions). This one isn't raging yet, so just a normal attack, hitting her AC exactly, for 1d8+3=5 damage.
The other hob moves to H10 at the bottom of the stairs, but stops there, afraid of drawing an AoO from Coraline if he tries to move through.
The minotaur falls under a combination of attacks from Benedetto (last round) and Yurgan, Miho and Tate this round, dying before his initiative is reached.
The two wounded hobgoblins appear to be in really bad shape. One more hit on each will probably bring them down ... but they are barbarians, so who knows.
Nightwish |
I tried uploading the excel spreadsheet to Google Documents, but it doesn't look like it precisely translates, especially where multiple cells are merged and where text runs vertically rather than horizontally. So for now, I guess I'll stick with the way we've been doing it.
Also, it appears that Invisible Castle is down for the time being. Does anyone know of another good die-rolling site where you can document the rolls? If not, then everyone will be on their honor with the die-rolling until IC comes back online.
Nightwish |
Tate sprints to J10, passing behind Yurgan and Neehan. The hobgoblin on I9 will get an attack of opportunity on him
With a double move, you can get there without taking an AoO, because you can move through friendly-occupied squares as long as you aren't charging.
Nightwish |
Catching up the stragglers from last round (Benedetto, Hans and the dire wolf, Amie [since I had forgotten her delayed action the previous round]): With a brief furrowing of the brow, Benedetto gives the hob in H10 the stare-o-death, and the beastie starts bleeding from the eyes, dropping lifeless to the ground. The dire wolf tears viciously into the hob in I9 (Hans didn't specify which one it would attack, so I put it against that one, since that's the one causing the bottleneck at the door), practically ripping it in two.
Nightwish |
That's my fault, because I had forgotten about Amie's delayed action, and had updated the round before a couple other characters had posted their actions. I need to start paying closer attention to posting order. It is now the beginning of a new round.
Neevan |
No problem! :) I kind of suspect that H10 is going to be taken up by Coraline or the wolf before my turn, so...
Seeing how quickly the wolf tore through the hobgoblin she had been fighting, Neevan looked about quickly for where she was needed most. Surely such a ferocious animal, apparently allied with them, probably called my one of the strangers by magic, would turn on the next hobgoblin coming down the stairs. The fighting was going to get too crowded in that corner, so she opted to go up.
Stepping her right, she ran towards the stairway and leapt as high as she could, hoping to cut off the other hobgoblin's escape, and to see if any other dangers were coming towards them from above.
Acrobatics: 15(to leap from H8 to G8)
If she makes it and if she has time, Neevan will make a quick strike against the hob in G9

You're trying to leap to a space that is about 5' verticle, so the DC would normally be 20. But since you also have a banister that you can use to aid in vaulting the stairs, I'll reduce that DC to 15, so that will succeed. However, you'll need to make another Acrobatics check at DC 19 to avoid an attack of opportunity, since there's no route you can take to get there without moving through his threatened area at least once. Regardless, you'll still make it to G8 on your turn, and can get your attack, if the hobgoblin is still there at that time.

Benedetto looks at Neevah as she sprints up the stairs. "That 'un's sure nimble," he thinks to himself.
He calls after her: "Do yah think the bugbear mage'd be keepin' a bodyguard or two? If'n so, would you like another hand?"
The ghostly head of a pretty red-haired woman emerges from the wall next to you, turns in the direction you're looking, and says in an eerie whisper, "Nimble little minx, isn't she?"
And yes, that really did happen - apparently the spirit has seen Ghostbusters.
Benedetto |
To get line of sight to the hobgoblin Benedetto fried, he'd need to be in L6, I believe. Which also provides for a handy wall next to him.

Yurgan Durduum |
They're not dead yet?
The dwarf spins around the corner, low to the ground as to avoid drawing his opponents. He quickly recites some arcane syllables, finishes his casting by spitting on the hobgoblin's boot, and reaches out with sparking fingers to deliver his attack.

Hehe, fortunately you don't lose the spell by missing, so your hand is still nice and sparkly for the next round! Just if your companions bring down the hobs this round, make sure you don't bump fists with them in celebration!

Benedetto turns and replies, "So's I says, but I'd reckon she's got nothin' on one such as yeself, pretty lady. So, who's side you be takin' in this here rumble?"
"Well, sweet thang, you don't look like one of those nasty things that's infested my home, and I'll bet that if I had a sense of smell, you wouldn't smell like them either, so that puts me on your side ... if I had an actual body to attack with, that is."
Lucky Hans |
"Aroden's holy b#!*%s!" Hans just about jumps out of his skin as the apparition comes out of nowhere. "Who are you, milady?"
