Red Feather is silent in the distribution of Magic Items, but if someone already has a magic bow he would humbly accept either the new one or a hand me down if someone has two. He does have the requisite feats to use one effectively, and is lousy at melee. Much better off standing back, singing, and lobbing artillery.

We could work something out to Ben can ware the barding until we get to a town with a balck smith and then Barley Rye can have it. Barely Rye does more in battle than Ben does anyway.
Isn't a Nessian warhound Large-sized? In that case, the barding wouldn't fit Barley Rye, I think.

It is large-sized, but it could be refitted by a blacksmith, for a fee.

Also who here is really good with a long sword ? I was kind of eyeing the bow but Amie's diety has that as a favored weapon so we can decide as a group.

You can have the mithral +2, being the ranger. I was interested in it for its light weight and its neat-o silenced quality, but would rather keep the +2 chain mail I've already got than go +1 mithral.

None of the other stuff really works for Cal.

Don't forget Tate. As a roue, that silenced mithral chainmail could be very handy for him, as well.

Hmm funny how we all are flirting with the mithral armour and the yet unknown bow.

Since scranford just had a birthday he should get some say right : )

And I'd love to find out what our lady druid has on her.

I forgot that I had another feat coming since Red Feather took Totem Spirit which is an AP feat, and I believe you said we get one of them for free. He will take Mounted Archery, as if falls in place with the character concept, and hasn't had a chance to be used yet.

Speaking of Mounts, if you noticed Red Feather has a lot of Ride skill, and Mounted combat, and now mounted archery with no mount. I was hoping to purchase a unique mount when I save enough money. Leafing through the Arms and Equipment guide for 3.0 I came across an interesting mount; The Giant Praying Mantis. I think it would be cool to have such a mount with Shaonti totem / war paint decorating it. I know I'd have to pay for it, and the exotic saddle as well, but I'm doing this for flavor, not to min/max any characteristic. What do you think?

Like I said earlier Amies claim so far is...

2 regular longbows
1 master worked glaive
Barding

As far as the Oathbow goes I thought Coraline might use it as it might work into her favored enemy thing. Though it may work well for Red Feather too. I was trying to go through and figure out which item would work best for each character. The problem is that we have 6 "special" items, 7 if you include the barding and 8 players. I did get as far to figure that the Chainmail would have the greatest use for Tate and the +3 Armor for Diego. The Ring of Protection is the only thing Hans can use considering his size, but its really the only thing that suits Sevegny. The +2 longsword can only be used by Red Feather, Cal and Coraline and honestly I dont think any one needs the +1 shield as most of us already have the same thing or something better. Thats about all I was able to figure out.

I thought about the Oathbow but I like the bow I got. I haven’t tried it yet, and its something I meant to ask you about Nightwish, but the reason I wanted my bow to be made of horn is because seeing as the holy sign of Erastil is a Horn/Antler Bow with a arrow, it would be nice if in the middle of battle I could channel and energy through that instead of having to pull out my holy symbol. I got this idea from a friend who did it with his Paladins ALL the time.

What I did with that bunch of hobgoblins was take them from an online NPC repository I found, and laid out the magic items as they appeared there (though I augmented a couple things). I didn't even think about the character count, as I had chosen the enemy size before the last couple characters got added to the group. So what I'll probably do, if anybody ends up short-handed after this encounter, is put something in the stomach of the warhound, something that you all missed because it got buried in the ash and remains of the warhound. That'll make it fair for everybody.

As far as using your bow as a holy symbol, I figured that's what you had in mind, and you can certainly use it in that manner. Although most clerics use small and easily handled holy symbols, they certainly aren't limited to amulets and talismans.

I'll get to the results of the interrogation sometime tomorrow. I'm away from home for most of today, and I don't have my power cord with me. My laptop is a cheap Wal-Mart special, and when it is on battery only, the screen is very dim and hard to see, and reading the module (which is itself kind of dark) to get at what information the hobs will give out is very difficult.

Can I make a Knowledge Arcana or Appraise check to try and speculate on what the druid actually handed to me ?

It sounds cool by the way.

You'll need to make two rolls. First, a Knowledge (Planes) roll at DC20 to see if you've ever heard of it. If you have no ranks in Knowledge (Planes), you can make a Knowledge (Arcana) check at -5 (DC20), since that's not the optimum Knowledge skill for this check, but it could still get you there (you'd pretty much have to roll a Natural 20, unless someone aids you). If successful, an Appraise check at [DC30 minus however many points you succeeded the Knowledge (Planes or Arcana) check by] to recognize it for what it is.

Or you can simply ask her. She seems friendly enough.

So what was the final decision on the distribution of items? I need to know, because as I said, for this encounter (and this one only), I will make an exception and add a couple more things in the remains of the warhound to insure that each character gets something they can use. Future encounters may not always yield usable treasure, but for the first one I want to make it fair for everyone. So I need to know who got left out so I can make sure the new items are useful to them. So give me a list of who got what.

The Exchange

Oh, this reminds me of something. A friend of mine gave me a good idea about using Natural 20's and Natural 1's. Rather than a Natural 20 being an automatic success, it is instead treated as a 30. And rather than a 1 being an automatic failure, it is instead treated as a -10, representing the idea that despite your best efforts, there are just some things that are beyond your ability, and that despite your worst efforts, you still might be able to luck your way into succeeding at something.

As I said before, Hans will take the ring, or cash, or the mystery item you're referring to. I'm not picky.

The Exchange

Me - male; my characters - usually female Depends which day it is 20th Level Metalhead

What I've got so far is (not counting the non-magical items):

Ring of Protection +1 - Hans
Chainmail +2 Barding - Ben the horse (possibly resized for Barley later)
Studded Leather +3 (Arcane) - Diego

Still contested:

Oathbow - most likely either Red Feather or Coraline
Mithrail Chainmail +2 (Silent) - most likely Tate or Cal
Shield +1 - probably a sell/trade item
Longsword +2 - probably Cal, Red Feather or sell/trade

More than likely, the two mystery items will probably be for our two clerics, but I'll wait until you guys decide.

RF, the longsword +2 is yours if you want it. On the other hand, if you are going to take the Oath Bow, I guess Cal can use the longsword as a backup weapon, in case anything happens to his greatsword.

Liberty's Edge

I don't want any of the items. Thanks.

Sevegny, there are still two items that Nightwish was kind enough to add.

A DM being a little generous at the start of a campaign is always a good thing, but it always makes me worry of what he is planning to throw at us later to make up for the 'random acts of kindness'.

But I'm sure Nightwish is above that : P

I'm happy I know next to nothing about this module, I'm havin' fun.

If no one can appraise the new items I'll give it a shot.

Lastly, I was rather interested in the mithral armor as well and willing to give up the mithral armor + 1 I started with, I know Tate is a rouge but I was also thinking of being one of the group's scouts.

Female I'll let you know when I figure that one out. 4th lv Mother/1st lv Ranger

The Lenses are kinda cool. Amie wouldnt mind thoise. But shes already grabbing the Barding so if anyone else likes them, go ahead.

Also we have have alot of extra items of ordinary quality. Amie should be able to load them into her back pack or quiver (or atleast onto Ben) and will hold them for any one that wants to sell them once we get into town.

Male Daytona 500 DM / 12

Red Feather is probably not going to spend any time in Melee, unless he absolutely has to. In that case he will use his spear. The Oath Bow would be used in almost all combat, since Red Feather's focus is ranged weapons. In fact, since we got the free Area feat, he has taken Mounted Archery as well. I'm not going to insist, since I'm sure there will be other opportunities for loot, but the Oath Bow is probably the only Item Red Feather would really be interested in. So I'll take the Bow if no one objects.

I was going for the mithril armor or the bow, the bow being my first choice (thinking my Dex 22 would put it to good use) but since I was willing to give it up to Amie, I'll recognize your interest in the bow, so take it, just be on the look out for magical rapiers.

: )

Again if I get to take the armor I'll give my mithril +1 up.

Also any more questions for our captives ? What does the druid think we should do with themI ?

She doesn't really care. She's more or less there as a vehicle for information, and to point you in the right direction, and maybe to occasionally pull your butts out of the fire if you get in too deep, though I wouldn't count on that too many times.

The Exchange

Me - male; my characters - usually female Depends which day it is 20th Level Metalhead

The Oathbow doesn't have a favored enemy, per se. Rather, you designate a favored enemy each time you use it. Basically, you aim it, say the words of power, and the target you aimed at becomes the favored enemy until either it dies or you do. It gives some pretty good bonuses to hit the enemy you've targeted, but negatives to hit any other opponent while the "favored" enemy still lives, and negatives to use any other weapons until the "favored" enemy is discharged. In that regard, it basically acts as an intelligent item with an ego. As such, it is probably better suited to someone who is likely to stick with that weapon throughout the entire combat with the enemy, rather than someone who is likely to switch between ranged and melee combat against the same target.

So, during the same combat, you could designate a hobgoblin as it's favored enemy, kill it, then designate an orc as the favored enemy, kill it, then designate an enemy human as the favored enemy, and so on. Just make sure the enemy you designate is one that you can handle! Targeting a dragon might become a bit cumbersome if you have to pursue it to the ends of the earth over the course of several levels just to discharge it to be able to get the bow's bonuses against something else!

The Exchange

Me - male; my characters - usually female Depends which day it is 20th Level Metalhead

We can recruit, if need be. We may not need to if Baron brings in his friend.

Right now, assuming that Tate, Diego, Sevegny and Cal are permanently gone, that leaves us with one cleric (Amie), one sorceror/druid (Hans), one sorceror/fighter/dragon disciple (Johnny), one ranger (Coraline). Once you find and free Yalla, her class abilities will be available as well. I won't specify exactly what class(es) she possesses, but I will say they are a combination of psionic and martial combat, with some rogue abilities thrown in, but primarily martial combat. It appears that we're weak on arcane spellcasting, but I will say that some things are not as they seem. If Baron's friend wants to run an arcane caster, we're least in need of sorcerors, though a wizard or bard could be handy.

The Exchange

Awesome! So we've still got a decent group. And we're a lot smaller and more manageable than before. But if Baron's friend still wants to join, that's okay, too.

I would still recommend replacing NPCs with PCs as soon as possible (e.g. recruiting a player for "Johnny" or any other NPC who might join the party). That's just my preference; the more (players), the merrier!

The Exchange

Me - male; my characters - usually female Depends which day it is 20th Level Metalhead

We could certainly do that with "Johnny," since he's about the same level as the rest of you. For the time being, I'll keep Yalla as an NPC, as she's got a couple levels on the rest of you (she also has a level adjustment), plus she'll only be traveling with you guys for certain parts of the campaign.

And baron, since you're going to be busy moving, do you want me to just NPC Coraline until you're done (especially given the circumstances that we discussed by email)?

Also, your friend that wants to join the game, does s/he want to run Johnny or a character of his/her own creation? I'll put up a re-recruitment thread to attract a new player, but I'm not sure whether to recruit for a new character or just for a player to run Johnny.

Oh, the joy of living at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers - we get every storm that even thinks of brewing, much like Chicago!

I've put up a re-recruitment thread in the Gamers Connection forum to get another player. I don't know how soon baron will get back to me about whether his friend wants to play Johnny or a new character, so I left both options open in the re-re thread, and we'll just cross that bridge when we come to it.
