I'm weird like that :P

And I am out of time to post. I'll try to log on when I get home....this needs to be solved.

And now I can't even be certain that all my posts are being read, or that I am seeing everyone else's...
As far as I know I have tried to adapt to other people's storylines, making tweaks and cuts when others have insisted that things will only work their way.
I have tried to do things with most aliases having a reasonable degree of intelligence and sense. If roots starting breaking through rock into a cavern, then pieces are going to start raining down all over the place.
At which point, anyone inhabiting that cavern ought to get out; especially if they're hundreds of years old and have probably had 'cave-ins' happen before.

I probably should have used this thread to check that things were clearer at times. I actually thought that a clever attempt to get all the stars and Lynora-Jill together in Daelemos' lair was underway, with just the one root, and that some sort of 'more tasty beetles and bugs show up to distract the nameless things' might be the next step, not a wholesale root invasion.

You made it clear that that was supposed to be a bad idea. And I have no idea what would be considered the proper precautions. Not to mention that you could have told me that any of the numerous times I asked for help. This is what I'm talking about. I can't read your mind.

I'm sorry about how emotional my posts were earlier. I had a really crappy weekend and that left me a little less emotionally stable than usual.

Spoiler:
There's nothing like a wedding anniversary when you're having marital problems. Seriously, a tooth extraction would be less painful.

That doesn't mean that my points are invalid, just that I really should have expressed them better. I apologize if I came across as attacking.

I have done my best to wrap up any storylines I was developing and to evacuate any characters which were in contact with anyone else.
I have posted allowing for Candle Lighter and Frost getting out of the Realms of Dream, and shut it off, so that nobody has any reason to go there any more, except by way of casual dreaming.
Apologies for being so dense and getting in everyone else's way.
I shall bow out for now.

Hmm. The accusation of god-modding particularly hurt coming from someone with an alias who is an unkillable deity that uses the world-ash as a personal bulldozer/wrecking ball to remotely batter sites.
I shall be taking some time away.
At this point I don't know if I will be back or not.
If you were interested in one thing mentioned elsewhere, possibly a clever way was found to duplicate/clone the essence which was in that star which was 'off the radar' in the Wildwood in the Realms of Dream*, and that duplicate was what was sent along in the casket with Sorsha.
More 'god-modding', meh, I know.

Edit:
*That was the one 'with the power of life' that the Grey Wanderer's cultists were originally after.

Charles, I apologize. I got frustrated with what looked to me to be an unwinnable situation and used what even I considered to be an extreme response. LJ isn't unkillable. But I can see how it would look that way. I didn't do the one thing that I really should have which was take some time to think things through more clearly before I got upset. I never meant to drive you away from the game. I'm sorry.

I'm not really sure what to say. Other than a general apology. For losing my cool, for making a scene, for being a bit of a jerk. To Charles especially, I am so sorry that I made you feel like you were unwanted in the game. I am really wishing I had a do-over button right now. Yes, I was frustrated, but that was no excuse for being a jerk. I'm really sorry.

And since I'm in an apologizing mood, I'm really sorry for anything else I might have done that stepped on someone's toes. Let me know what that might have been and I will do my best to change it.

My 2 cp - It's the time involved that wears people down. RL is very demanding. Jobs, family, the crappy economy. Light fun is what I'm after.

Liked the storylines, and all the twists. Just not enough energy left in me, 'til I'm done with this blasted project.

The star project just spiralled out of control.

All valid points. This is supposed to be fun, especially for those of us who are having rough times in RL and could use the distraction.

Argh - I can't form a cogent thought to save my life right now. I'll try in the morning when I'm not so frayed. G'night all...

Well, the frustrations have been posted for several weeks so this isn't surprising. Had our RL game take a turn like this. Once we hashed it out it became fun again. Hope that happens here too.

Oh, and Lyn, good luck. Hopefully it's just one of those lowpoints that makes the highlights more special. And you're forgiven for having Arielle without telling me. ;) - just kidding

Aw, did Charles leave? That sucks. Hope you decide to come back, Charles!
Hmm...so, our problems are:
God modding/accusations of such.
Some characters appearing to be unbeatable.
'Inflated' egos from those with the most important characters (i.e., me)
The plot getting too complex.
One-sided discussions.
People leaving due to confusing stuff.
Ah crap, we're turning into ABR! ;)
my personal recommendation: Wrap it up. Finish up this Lynora suboplot. Finish up the Miruthan subplot (I've actually stopped reading it, sad to say, because it's so huge). Finish up the Oroth subplot (is it still going?)Deal with Shadow Pelt. I'll wrap up the Servants of the Board subplot, and the Jay Frogskin sub-subplot. Charles has the right idea, sort of: Bring all these confusing subplots to a close, though I think the character withdrawal is overkill.
Once they're all gone, deal with the 'egos'. I have done my best to lower my importance, and the importance of my characters. I don't mean to sound presumptuous, but perhaps others should do the same. Finish up the main plot. Then the Giggler can fall from prominence. So can Lynora, and Jack Hammer, and Devlyn, and all the other 'bigwigs'. Make Lynora a full goddess, like Sunny, so that she literally has little time for the plot, except to help out every now and then. Make JH a lord, or something, for the same reason. Have all the Champions lose their 'champion-ness', as I have already done (albeit by killing off my character). Then we can start a new plot, a fresh one, a clean slate.
If I'm out of line here, please tell me. But this is my personal opinion of what we should do.

Shadow Lodge

Yeah the whole 'Champion of {insert element}' may have been a bad idea.

After the subplots are done, any ideas on a fresh plot? The one I posted about evil dragons waking up may not be the best idea right now...
Maybe we could try something with 'low-level' aliases.

One of the reasons I wanted to finish this star thing was just that. So I could let LJ step back from the main plot and actually be a goddess, only making the occasional cameo. I probably should have made my intentions clearer from the first. I don't know that retiring all the characters is fair though.

Dragonborn3 wrote:

The Champion idea was good, but it's outlived its welcome.

Back for some brief analysis. I’m still tired from lack of sleep the previous night/morning, and frustrated from what happened since, so I may be further off target than I might otherwise have been with some points.
Clearly I failed to communicate properly. Apologies for this. Part of this came from wanting to surprise people occasionally (although I sat here typing things feeling it was painfully transparent what was going on), and part of it was from wanting to avoid as far as possible saying to other people ‘your alias must go there and do exactly that, because only that will work’.
With regard to the dragon Daelemos I felt pressured to repeat how big and nasty he was in terms of contest of arms or spells, since I got a sense of expectation from some posters that they felt that their aliases would automatically beatdown almost any evil alias because it’s a ‘bad guy’ and bad guys are just there to expire, occasionally managing to achieve as much as scuffing the good-guys’ shoes as they expire. This may come down to different genre expectations. Maybe I should have stayed away completely from these threads in the first place.
I don’t know whether or not the sub-plots were too confusing or not. I personally found little difficulty having a general overall idea of what was going on except when things happened ‘behind the scenes without posts’, but the contorted plots of at least one Radio 4 soap-opera here in the UK may have trained me to deal with keeping track of such things.
I know I would have found it useful in some cases to have information in profiles, however. I tried to make a few details available in the profiles of most of my aliases, although unfortunately, the ‘wanting to surprise’ got in the way of some things going in, and ‘lack of time to update’ with regard to others.
With regard to character withdrawal, I have done so since I have no idea whether or not I will be back, and I felt it unfair to leave obvious loose ends lying around creating uncertainty for those remaining active.
Are plots useful for allowing people to think through what their characters would do and to define and develop them? Do people even want to define and develop characters? Again, here the question of what are the expectations as to genre or other style of story-telling specifics comes into play. And how much should even that matter?

Even if this post is utter incomprehensible nonsense, I hope that you find it useful in suggesting directions for your continuing debate.

Yours Faithfully,

C. Evans.

Wow. Lots going on. Apologies for not posting yesterday evening, got in a car accident. Currently a little loopy on pills, so if this tends to ramble, forgive me.

I think that an open-ended game like this can become frustrating, especially when one person is trying to do something cross-purposes with another. Also, like many, I often find it difficult to keep track of who everyone is and who is doing what in relation to whom. We don't have a moderator, so we are relying on each other to write the story forward, which can be difficult.

Sometimes the plots become complex organically, as the current underwater/Mirathan/Nimora one has. People just begin to come up with differnt things which get bolted on to the main story. The problem is that following everyone's pet subarcs can be difficult, especially if life keeps you away from the threads for a day or two.

I enjoy the shared creation with you folks, I just think we all need to respect each other's boundaries and comunicate more. That's what this particular thread is all about.

Anyway, I am not working today, it's raining and it seems like every bone in my body is aching. I will most likely be posting between drugged naps. If anyone has an issue with any of my characters, today is a good day to wrap things up.

Funny thing is that this stuff kinda evolved on its own, as people jumped on the pieces they liked or sparked their interest. Of course that led to a lot of power creep/explosion. Not surprising in a rules-free format.

Even when I planned on pulling back some things, (JH's coma was supposed to be the end of his powers, and I was heading to leaving Mirathan dead - not making him an heir), I kept going with stuff to keep the storyline moving forward, AND HAD FUN DOING IT.

Frustrations aside, part of me wonders if we've just killed our RPG. Is there a bit of fun left in us?

I'm still having fun. I think we just need to realize that no one likes being railroaded. We should make more of an effort to discuss plot twists. I know surprise is a big thing, but we can at least agree on basics before advancing the storyline. Here's a few basics I've been thinking:

1. Everyone's characters are their own. If you imprison/kill/otherwise attempt to change someone's character, you need to OK it with the person beforehand.

2. Power levels need to be reined in. Every character with god powers needs to find a thread to inhabit and take on an advisor role. Playing against gods or characters with god-like powers gets frustrating.

3. Sub plots need to be reined in. I am very bad at this myself, but I think it is getting waaay too confusing as to who is doing what to whom. We need to get one story done before we begin another. In this spirit I am going to have the Giggler stay 'off camera' until we get some of this mess straightened out. We don't need Chuckles messing things up more.

4. Communication is key! None of us are the DM, we need to talk more about where we are going with posts. We are all smart enough to write up the game in a proper form even if we know some of the details beforehand. If someone needs a hint, by all means give it! We don't have skills, so we can't roll a Knowledge(whatever) to uncover stuff. And sometimes, we just miss the post point (Just like I was confused by Daelmos killing the carnies, until I realized they had insulted dragons) .

Any other suggestions?

Patrick, I hope you feel better soon. That really stinks about the car accident.

There are parts of the game that I was really having fun with, especially the whole underwater cities subplot, which has the advantage of being so disconnected from the rest that it can move at its own pace without holding everything up. This has been a really fun game, and while I can see the desire to simplify and shift the focus to lower-level characters, I'd really hate to just throw everything out. Then again, I can't really play all by myself, so I guess really, it's what the rest of you want to do that matters here.

I would hate to think that the game stops for good because of one bad day, (reiterates previous apologies from yesterday), but if it does, then thank you all for providing some much-needed escapist fun during a period of time when my real-life has been anything but fun.

Thanks for the sympathies Lynora, you have mine on your situation as well.

Don't worry, I am not giving in. I like the game, and I for one will keep posting. My thoughts are that no one can force me to do anything. If I want a character to do something, then he/she will do it. Everyone can scream godmodder all they want, I try to play along with everyone, but if nothing works then I'll just fiat it. Don't feel frustrated and such if you can't get satisfaction. Communicate, and if that doesn't work, just write up what you want. I personally reserve the right to godmod after all solutions fail. This game is not constrained by rules after all.

Of course. All FFRPing goes through this at some point, and ABR hasn't stopped. If we can just reign in the confusion, then it can flourish again.

At any rate, I worked pretty hard to get people into RPing here (though, at the time, I sucked at it), I'm not about to leave! XD

As long as they don't power up and become 'No one can kill me' type of characters it should be fine. God powers aren't fun for the others, because then it's the whole 'can't be killed' things. Every character, god or no, should have an Achilles' heel.

I really have got to find some resource for underwater life and adventure. Any suggestions out there?

The 'Threat from the Sea' novels from the Forgotten Realms featured some underwater adventuring, and there was an accompanying source book 'Sea of Fallen Stars' which had some information/suggestions on life underwater.
