My Account - keeps asking for password

Website Feedback

Whenever I click My Account the screen keeps asking for my password. It doesnt seem to matter if I type it in or not, because it'll just ask me again. Over and over. This just started happening a few days ago. What am I doing wrong?

Liberty's Edge

Does it ever get it to your account? If so, there's nothing wrong - Paizo just instituted a new security feature that prompts for a password whenever you attempt to access your account.

If it's locked in a loop and only asking for the password without getting you anywhere then that's a separate issue that would need Gary.

Are you perhaps not providing the right password?

If you have cookies set, once you type your password correctly, it won't ask you again for a while.

It started doing that to me a few weeks ago. It was shortly after my son got an account here that he accesses using the same computer. I figured it was something to do with that.

This started happening to me a few weeks ago too. The site never asked for my password and now it asks everytime I want to go into my account or check my downloads or my subscriptions.

Scarab Sages

Same here, about 3-4 weeks ago.

same here, rather annoying. I would click my account to check something, asks for password. even at times when I am posting it will ask for password. when I am still on the same visit to the site, and I go check my downloads, or my order history, it will ask for my password. regardless if it was the same few minutes or not. I do get access just fine, but it is needlessly "hounding me" for my password.

and as the others said, about a month ago.

Dark Archive

And here I am thinking that it was a new security precaution....

Dark Archive

Doing it here too ... though, seems to have gotten more frequent for some reason lately.

Like, even within the same session on the website.

I just clicked on My Account, logged in, read two posts, posted two posts, clicked on My Account again and was prompted again.

Liberty's Edge

Same here, started a few weeks ago.

Dark Archive

Doing it to me as well.

Yep, it started happening to me a few weeks ago now too. Every time I click on the "My Account" Link it prompts me for my password. Every Time. It was becoming extremely annoying. Now that I am back from holidays I can see it becoming annoying once again as it looks like it hasn't been fixed...

Scarab Sages

I am relatively new to this site but the last few weeks it logs me out of my account and asks me for passwords.

Annoying and a pain when shopping or window shopping.

I used to be able to stay logged on for days!

I also have had it ask for my password, every time I click on my account, my downloads, or my pathfinder society.

I've also noticed that when I type my password in, if I hit the "Enter" key, it just refreshes the password screen. It only actually takes my password if I manually click the button on that screen using the cursor.

That is exactly what happens to me as well!

It just keeps asking for my password. It never goes to my account or anything and it is a pain to back out of (I assume it is backing out of each time I entered the password???)

This would be the "locked in a loop/needs Gary" variety of problem.

I haven't had this problem *here* - but I've seen similar problems elsewhere. What operating system are you using? What browser? (and version?). If it's a bug with the site, the developers will need to know.

Make sure you have cookies enabled, and/or allowed for this site.
If you're using Internet Explorer, try going to Tools->InternetOptions->General and deleting your cookies (the theory being that you have an old, invalid, password saved in a cookie that won't go away. Deleting it will force the browser to refresh it with the new, good, value). Of course, a better fix would be to switch to FireFox. ;-)

Windows XP, Internet Explorer.

No clue what FireFox is.

No it's definately a problem.

I am always logged in and have never had a different password. I stay logged in, it just prompts me for my Password (not a full login) every time I try to got to My Account.

On another matter. Around the same time as this problem occurred, I started getting another problem:
When I click on the link for my Last Post in a Thread (from my "Recent Posts" link in my Profile), it instead takes me to the very start of the Thread instead of to my Post. It is very annoying if there have been a lot of Posts since my last one and I want to try and find mine so I can read from there. It doesn't however do this for every Post, just the majority of them.

Exactly the same here, and it happens also when I click the "checkout button" in my shopping card.

Mac OS X 10.4.11 and 10.5.6, Camino 1.6.6 and Firefox 3.0.3, and Safari.

Add me to the list of the site asking for my password whenever I try to go to My Account. One other point I am using Firefox and have it set to remember my password, and I still get to page that asks for my password. Is there a problem in the system or is this a new security measure?

Just my 2 cp.

Liberty's Edge

If I remember correctly, this started after someone complained that someone else had accidentally ordered a gift for him using his account. It's a security feature. It doesn't seem annoying to me.

Also for me, same time period. Just the "every time I click My Account or My Downloads" part.

I assumed it was new security, and had been waiting to decide whether the annoyance was worth the extra security - I'd been annoyed by the lack before but the extreme convenience of not having to login to post (on multiple computers per day) was making it worth it.

Yes, I forgot about that part. No enter key - I have to mouse click the button. Sounds like we are all having exactly the same issue. I thought maybe it was just me.

Probably right. However, I would set it on a cookie that expires when you close the browser, or with a date range. If I go to My Account multiple times (say I forgot to do something), I have to sign back in again even though it's been 5 minutes.

However, if you keep your page up indefinately, like I do, the same security issue can be seen.

Yes, this one has also been a pain.

It wouldnt annoy me if the feature actually let me get to my account page. LoL

P.S. Thanks all, for the tip on clicking "enter" instead of just pressing the enter key in rl. That worked. I dont know why I didnt think of it .. except that there is an enter key on my keyboard and I have used it for awhile now.

Note: I had a similar problem when I asked for an email reminder of my password. It seems that copying the password from the email and pasting it into the password field does not work. The effect of that is that it "keeps asking for your password". This might be part of what you're experiencing.

However, typing the password in rather than copy/pasting it does work and that solved my problem.

I hope that helps.

From what I understand, we have to now ask for your password whenever you access the secure portion of the website. That would be the My Account, My Subscriptions, My Downloads, and the Checkout pages for sure. The reason for this is new security requirements from VISA and Mastercard. They want to make sure that people can't gain access to your account information. Sorry about the inconvenience, but it is REALLY much more safe for your account. If there is more to add to this, I'm sure Vic and/or Gary will be along to clarify.

I figured it was a security feature, which is great. If Gary or Vic can enable the "enter" key on the keyboard soon, that would be even better!

We did actually make a bunch of mandated changes late last year, but this particular change wasn't mandated—it's something we chose to implement for the protection of people who access their accounts in multi-user environments. It helps make sure that other users can't use your credit card, edit your profile, or access your assets.

If you're being asked for your password when you're not accessing a secure area, I'd suggest you check your to make sure that you're not using a bookmark that includes "https://" at the start of the URL, or "secure.paizo.com" as the domain name. If you are, edit your bookmarked URL to begin with "http://paizo.com".

As for making return work as well as a click, it already does on some browsers; I suspect Gary can figure out how to make it work for other browsers, though.

Also, once you *do* sign in after one of these password checks, it shouldn't ask you again as long as you're on the same "session." Your "session," though, is determined server-side, and.... well, it's complicated enough that I don't even think I could explain the rules. Suffice it to say that if you're actively browsing or posting on the site, though, you should *usually* remain on the same session for a while—potentially even a few hours—but there are some things that happen behind the scenes that you have no insight into and no control over that can cause your requests to switch sessions, and when it does, doing something "secure" will require you to re-enter your password.

Dark Archive

No problem with the changes, Vic. :D

Scarab Sages

Can I make a suggestion that you give users the option to stay logged on. Like a check box that comes up when you enter your secure area - Keep logged on until you log off or stay logged on for the day.

It really is a turn off, particularly when "window shopping" for items. Like when I take time to read the posts and reviews about a product and then think about it to only find I have to log in *again*.

I think that would be a reasonable compromise and would keep everyone secure and happy. :)

I was considering my previous post when you did this one Vic. It makes sense for sure. Better to be safe than sorry.

Vic, it is not working that way. If I look at my account and then browse the boards and decide to go back to my account I have to sign in again. I have sometimes looked at my downloads and then wanted to go to my account and had to sign in both times. Again, this is all recent. Maybe we can have an option to stay signed in or to login each time we go to the secured area. I am in a single user world and would rather be signed in all the time if it is possible.

Thanks (and if this is my only real complaint - life is pretty damn good).

On the weekend I had to sign in multiple times while in the My Downloads section. I would sign in, set something to download and then go away for 10 minutes. When I came back I would then try to personalise another download and it would send me back to the sign in screen again. I was still able to download everything eventually but it was quite annoying having to continually log in.

I do not know if this is related or if Gary is working on the site but when I hit enter now instead of sign in on the password page I get this error...
You backtracked too far.
The application backtracking limit of 30 has been exceeded.

It also give me an option to the left to click on a red link to reenter the store.

I also find this error comes up when I have multiple tabs option in IE7 and I use a earlier tab to go to my account. It asks for my password and regardless of whether I hit enter or sign in it gives me the previous error.

The way you're using tabs is confusing the mechanism that keeps track of where you are in the store, which is necessary to make sure you're seeing the right content. (There are often multiple ways to get to the same place, and we sometimes need to know which way you came so that we know what context to show the content in when you get there.)

The easiest way around this is, before you click a link on a really old tab, reload that tab.

Scarab Sages

Thanks Vic. I will follow your advice in the future.

Though, I will say that is how I have been using the site these past few months. It is only since the forementioned changes that this issue has arose.

I just need to change my habits. :)
