On most messageboards the "x new" is displayed for every thread, but it's tied to the last time you visited the site as a whole. We're trying something different -- we only display updates for threads you've actually read, and the "x new" is how many posts were added since you viewed that thread. The idea is to reduce clutter and improve useability.
I've wanted to add this feature for years but couldn't figure out a way to do it without killing our database servers.

Also I guess I should point out if that you're not seeing "x new" for a thread that you know you've read in the past few days and that has been updated.... well, this is new code and might have a bug or two. :-)
Now that I know why it's only listing it for threads I've read, I understand completely. It also looks to be working pretty well.

I should also note that while this feature got through reasonably extensive testing, I think I'm seeing threads not showing "x new" where they ought to be. I also think the focus view should show threads added since your last visit to a forum. So there's a bit of tweaking still to be done next week.

is this done with cookies? just asking because they are showing on one of the computers I access the page with, but not either of the others right now.. (and I didin;t even see that on this thread)
