I noticed this morning that some threads now have an additional bit of info next to the thread name. It says (x new) where x=the number of new posts. Is there a reason that this appears in some places and not others?

On most messageboards the "x new" is displayed for every thread, but it's tied to the last time you visited the site as a whole. We're trying something different -- we only display updates for threads you've actually read, and the "x new" is how many posts were added since you viewed that thread. The idea is to reduce clutter and improve useability.

I've wanted to add this feature for years but couldn't figure out a way to do it without killing our database servers.

Also I guess I should point out if that you're not seeing "x new" for a thread that you know you've read in the past few days and that has been updated.... well, this is new code and might have a bug or two. :-)

Now that I know why it's only listing it for threads I've read, I understand completely. It also looks to be working pretty well.

Now if only we could have a link that would pull up all of the links marked as "new," it would be perfect.

Focus!

Oh, for that you have to defocus slightly and look just behind the surface.

I should also note that while this feature got through reasonably extensive testing, I think I'm seeing threads not showing "x new" where they ought to be. I also think the focus view should show threads added since your last visit to a forum. So there's a bit of tweaking still to be done next week.

is this done with cookies? just asking because they are showing on one of the computers I access the page with, but not either of the others right now.. (and I didin;t even see that on this thread)

No, it's not done with cookies. It's stored entirely on our servers, though not in the database. So if you're signed in and view a thread on one machine it should be noted if you're signed in on another.

Still, this is a very cool idea! Thanks.

Cookies...?

Oh, the other kind of cookies...
