The Orcus minis we've been talking about are the one Gene's link is to above, and the Iconic Orcus mega-mini that was canceled. But the Degenerate Cultist of Orcus and (esp.) the Deathpriest of Orcus are what kicked off this whole Orcusfest. (I think you already know this, but just in case there's some lack of clarity above I overlooked.)

How about adding the Bugbear Strangler and the Bugbear Headreaver to the hopper?

BTW, what did you guys think of the Bugbear makeover in Classic Monsters Revisited? I loved it, and have tried to pick up minis that go more with this conception of the bugbear (I also picked up a blood ghost bugbear miniature, which doesn't require conversion.)

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:

I've already stated the strangler (ages ago). I'll look into the headreaver.

As for Orcus, he's going to end up CR ~32. I doubt either of you will get any use out of it as you seem to play in low to mid level campaigns from what I've seen. But still, I'm sure there are other folks out there who may be following my works and play in high to epic level campaigns.

Plus I intend to spring it on one of my groups of PCs within the next couple of sessions (they're all epic level).

Thanks, Gene. I must have misfiled or deleted it.

Really odd! Vista's search couldn't find it, but I finally found it the old-fashioned way--looking in folders. Weird.

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:

It's fine, man. He should be in the current version of the bestiary. :D

Sovereign Court

Sounds like too much hooka for all of us.

Glad we're all on the same page of the bestiary now... ;)

Would you use the Death Titan for a Death Giant?
How about adding the Fire Titan to the conversion queue?

Liberty's Edge

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:

That's what I've been using it for. It fits way too perfectly.

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:

It shall be done. :D

Here's the current list of what I'm working on as it stands:

TO STAT:
Grinning Imp (CR 1 - Demonweb Mini)
Infernal Armor (CR 2 - Demonweb mini)
Firebat (CR 3 - Against the Giants mini)
Bugbear Headreaver (CR 5 - Dungeons of Dread mini)
Degenerate Cultist of Orcus (CR 6 - Against the Giants mini)
Soulrider Devil (CR 7 - Demonweb Mini)
Scythe Jaw (CR 7 - Demonweb Mini)
Web Golem (CR 9 - Demonweb Mini)
Shadow Flayer (CR 10 - Demonweb Mini)
Thoon Hulk (CR 12 - Demonweb mini)
Death Priest of Orcus (CR 14 - Against the Giants mini)
Angel of Retribution (CR 15 - Against the Giants mini)
Rakshasa Assassin (CR 15 - Demonweb mini)
Fire Titan (CR 20 - Against the Giants mini)

EXTRAS:
Orcus (CR 32 - Demon)

Everything look right?

If so, we're set through the next three or so bestiary releases. After that point I think I'm going to have to step down from doing this (by then we'll have 40 monsters converted) so that I can move onto other projects that are in dire need of work.

---

My order of work is thus: Orcus, Degenerate Cultist of Orcus, Death Priest of Orcus, and so on from the lowest CR up to the highest. The next stat block release will include the aforementioned three minis and should occur either later tonight or early tomorrow morning.

So, you still want to do the monsters that are in MM III and MM V? It's fine with me if drop them (or replace them with minis that are 4e only).

I'd like to; if not for just restating them to add the new abilities from the 4E versions.

We'll see when we get there I suppose.

Liberty's Edge

Wee, a bundle of Orcus-themed enemies. Here are the stats for the Degenerate Cultist (CR 6) and the Deathpriest (CR 15):
Deathpriest of Orcus
Degenerate Cultist of Orcus

Orcus himself is almost done; I've just got to finish up writing up his flavor-text and giving a brief background to the Rod of Orcus. After that, it's onto the Grinning Imp, Infernal Armor, and Firebat.

Whoa - your work makes me very happy. I dare say, it inspires me. I have an evil god in my homebrew realm and his followers are central to next week's adventure. Your follower priest stats come at just the right time. Thanks Gene. Your work is outstanding.

Glad to see you're getting some use of the stuff, Pax. :D

I wish your group luck against that priest, hopefully he'll prove to be a challenge. :p

If all things go well, I should have the Grinning Imp and Infernal Armor up sometime later tonight/early tomorrow morning.

Liberty's Edge

Only a day late. :p

I present the Grinning Imp:
Imp, Grinning

Up next is the Infernal Armor and Firebat. Following those two is an update to the bestiary.

Go Gene Go!

Spoiler:
Thanks!

Sovereign Court

... hail, hail - the gang's all here!

Slow down, Gene! Now that the end is in sight, I really don't want it to end...:(

The Imp looketh good!

Yeah, same here. Shouldn't the grinning imp be "small" as its mini (gnashes teeth) betokeneth?

Liberty's Edge

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:

The mini's small? It says on the stat card that it's tiny!

Gawdungit!

I'll fix it ASAP! :D

EDIT: Just noticed I hadn't done its skill points either. I shall remedy that too!

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:

Not necessarily the end, mind you; just an extended break. I'll very likely pick it up in the future as I really have enjoyed doing this a great deal.

Plus I'm sure Wizards will put out some cool new minis eventually (once they get done reprinting the old ones with new colors :p)...

I wish it was tiny, but there it sits, towering over my old Deathknell imp. I wish I had a handfull of the old ones.

Yeah, these "new" minis are making Against the Giants and Demonweb look like a golden age... :S

And you can expect some mournful sounds from Pax and me as we slouch towards your break.
;)

Liberty's Edge

And here's the updated imp (now with 100% more skill points!):
Imp, Grinning

I've updated the links above as well, so you can use any of them to get the fixed version of the imp.

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:

Maybe small is the new tiny? :p

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:

Honestly! I'm not exactly a huge critic when it comes to painting minis (well, I kinda am, but I'm forgiving), but jeeze are these bad on a new scale.

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:

;)

Well... I could always start just releasing one a week. Then you guys would have like... fifteen weeks of minis to look forward to. :p

Or, once I finish this 'batch' up, I could just stat one mini a week of new stuff for you guys. I don't think that'd detract too much time from my other projects and it'd give me something to do when it comes to the conversion field.

OK, I have a selfish answer and a non-selfish answer. I think since you've been so good to us, I've got to give the non-selfish answer: do whatever it is you need to do, Gene. I'd rather have me and Pax kicking small neighborhood animals during your hiatus and you come back happy to start again, than hanging on and dragging it out for us and then quietly disappearing and coming back to Paizo with a new name...

Liberty's Edge

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:

You owe me the koolaid that's all over my monitor!!! :p

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:

I'd never do something like this; this community has been far too good to me for me to do something like that.

Besides you two can always hunt me down on Facebook. :D

Plus, I like using my own name on here and it's not like I hate doing this; quite the contrary to be honest.

---

As for the selfish answer, I probably already know that one. ;)

Seriously though, if you guys would like me to continue I can; the updates will just be a little slower on the uptake as they'll basically become a side-project instead of my main focus as they are now.

As it is, it's not like I'm being forced to do this in any way, I'm just choosing to focus on it because it's something 'new' to do as compared to writing up and playtesting prestige classes and feats and whatnot.

Liberty's Edge

And so the hell-fueled forges have begun cranking once again; so begins the rise of the Infernal Armor (CR 2):

Dude! It sounds like the plan M. had, actually worked. We hired circus trainer to send 20 dwarves to make noise while doing handstands outside your window last night. I bet it kept ya up - huh, well, did it?

I might run a few of these in tonight's game....! Thanks again.

Thanks, Gene! Your fame will spread as far as your conversions! I have a friend and a nephew who are also going to start using them.

Pax, those dwarves are retainers of mine. It cost a lot extra for them to agree to that humiliation, so it's good that it worked. ;)

Sovereign Court

Criminy!!!

The land-lubbers defended handsomely against pirates this evening.

I didn't get to use those tonight... maybe next time.

Gene, could you check the Runespiral link? It seems to be missing now.
Thanks!

No problem. :D

I think mediafire was just being a pain.

I'm looking into getting my own web/file-host so that this kind of problem shouldn't occur anymore.

And here's the firebat:

Now begins the tedious process of updating the bestiary (now to be renamed to the Creature Conversion Compendium) and getting that cover art.

And the Bestiary has been updated; it is now known as the Creature Conversion Compendium. Sadly, my artist is lazy and I don't have a cover as of yet (I should be getting it soon, I hope).

Ah...... nice to be back.

How has the mining been going my fellow Duergar?!?

Student papers have been full of slag. Little ore to speak of and precious few gems.

Liberty's Edge

I should be getting a new monster or two up later today. Next on the chopping block is the Bugbear Headreaver (followed by the Soulrider Devil). I had intended to get them up a day or two ago, but I got kinda absorbed in an Avatar: The Last Airbender marathon (friend of mine loaned me the DvD collection).

Okay, here's a link to the bugbear headreaver (CR 6) for those interested:

Berbalang Is Comin' To Town

I hear the Berbalang are creatures of Filipino myth. They originally made an appearance in White Dwarf #11 and the awesome Fiend Folio First Edition. It looks like the Berbalang is coming back to the bubble packs in the dangerous delves series. Methinks they may be worth using. To that end, I found the following on EnPlanet's Web site:

BERBALANG

Spoiler:

BERBALANG
Medium-Size Monstrous Humanoid
Hit Dice: 4d8+4 (22 hp)
Initiative: +2 (Dex)
Speed: 20 ft, fly 40 ft (average)
AC: 14 (+2 Dex, +2 natural)
Attacks: 2 claws +4 melee, bite –1 melee
Damage: Claw 1d4, bite 1d6
Face/Reach: 5 ft by 5 ft/5 ft
Special Qualities: Astral jaunt, material projection, spell immunity,
darkvision 60 ft
Saves: Fort +2, Ref +6, Will +5
Abilities: Str 10, Dex 15, Con 13, Int 12, Wis 12, Cha 13
Skills: Hide +9, Listen +8, Move Silently +7, Search +5, Spot +8
Feats: Dodge, Flyby Attack
Climate/Terrain: Any land
Organization: Solitary
Challenge Rating: 3
Treasure: Standard
Alignment: Always chaotic evil
Advancement: 5-12 HD (Medium-size)
The berbalang is a dark and evil creature that spends most of its life in a comatose state while its spirit wanders the Astral plane. When it
returns to the Material plane, it does so only to feed on the flesh of
humans who dwell near its lair.
The berbalang is a gaunt biped, ranging in size from four to seven
feet tall, with black, leathery skin. Its wide glowing eyes are watery and white in color. Two broad, bat-like wings sprout from the creature's
back.
COMBAT
When a berbalang or its material projection (see text below) is forced
into combat it makes the most of its ability to fly. When it strikes, it rips at its opponents with its claws and attempts to bite with its needle-like teeth.
If a berbalang's material projection is hit, the projection immediately
takes flight and attempts to flee, returning to the resting place of the
material berbalang.
Astral Jaunt (Su): The berbalang spends the majority of its life on
the Astral plane. When on the Material plane, it can shift to the Astral
plane as a full round action as astral projection cast by a 7th-level
sorcerer. This ability can be used at will by the berbalang.
Material Projection (Su): The berbalang can, when its astral form
returns to its body, create an exact duplicate of itself as a free action.
This projection travels forth in search of food for the berbalang up to a distance of three miles from its physical body.
The material projection looks and acts as the true berbalang. If the
projection is attacked it will flee at once, as quickly as possible,
returning to the location of the real berbalang.
If the projection is slain, the material berbalang must succeed at a
Fortitude save (DC 15) or die as well.
If the projection is wounded, the berbalang cannot produce another
for a number of days equal to the total points of damage suffered.
When the projection returns to its master, it dissipates, and the
material berbalang awakens from its trance.
Spell Immunity (Ex): The material projection is immune to all mindinfluencing
spells and effects.
BERBALANG ECOLOGY
The vast majority of its life is spent in a death-like trance that allows the monster's spirit to wander throughout the Astral plane. Here the berbalang stalks creatures weaker than itself and engages in complex
courtship and mating rituals with other berbalang.
If the material form of the berbalang is discovered or disturbed, the
berbalang immediately attempts to return to its body and animate it. The
return process takes 1d4 minutes for the astral form to find the material form.
If the body is destroyed, the astral berbalang is slain as well. For this reason the creature takes great care to seclude and protect the resting place of its physical body.
Once per month, at the times of the full moon, the berbalang returns
to the Material plane to send forth its material projection in search of
food.
A berbalang that does not feed will eventually seek revenge upon
those that interfered with it’s feeding. Although there may be a lull while the body of the berbalang recovers from the shock of the attack on its projection, retribution is a certainty.
If the projection was forced back to its body or destroyed before it
could find prey to feed upon, it will send forth another material
projection as soon as it is able, in order to satisfy its hunger (regardless of the phase of the moon) before seeking its revenge.
The Berbalang first appeared in the 1e FF (1981).

Advance away! Its wonderful to see you dipping into 1e in all its brilliance! And good work on the SRdevil. Its fun to get this widgit on Sunday night. If I didn't have tomorrow's adventure all set up, I'd throw them in!
As it stands, tomorrow will be absolutely gruesome... Canaloths, Mezoloths, and if they don't kill the bbeg in time, an Ultraloth will come through the Coordior to Gehenna! Ugh!
Sincerely, though, great work! I wish I had your talent.

Sovereign Court

Well... they never made it below the Palace of Skulls. They tripped an insanity mist trap and needed to head back into town. However, the battle with Sepulchral Guardians left them breathless.

Liberty's Edge

Insanity mist...

I like the sound of that! :D

Sovereign Court

I just picked up six rust monsters. What little cuties! The culprits of such terrible future mayhem!

I remember playing with that rust monster in my sandbox when Richard Nixon was still president. I always thought... damn, what an awesome monster!

I used to make up stories with that rust monster as the lead character. And he left such an awesome little footprint trail in the sand - I can still remember it.

Gygax said he drew inspiration for the rust monster from that very same made-in-china toy figure.

And here I am... 35 years later... still playing with it.

*raises his stein for a toast*

May we never grow up.

I've been thinking on picking a couple up myself, along with another monster or two (thinking on a couple frost giants). They're one of the many monsters that it surprises me took so long to get made in plastic form.

While I've never seen one of those old rust monster toys in the flesh, I have seen pictures of them. It's surprising how well the overall image of what a rust monster is has lasted through the years.

---

Apologies for the lack of updates, been busy, I should be back onto them sometime this weekend, hopefully. Probably Sunday.

Sovereign Court

Is the Berbalang-lang-land-do-lang-do-lang, on our list?

Here, here! (returns toast)

So, the rust monsters look better in person? I found that with the hippogriff (superawesome) and the unicorn.

Gene, if you feel like adding to the queue, how about the adamantine dragon and the bloodseeker drake?

I will need to scope those out.... not sure about them yet.

EDIT: I checked these out. They're okay. The detail on these newer sets seems forsaken, but I have to agree with M that these are good.

Just wondering though..... M, why do you need stats for a Hippogriff? Won't MMI do fine for you?
