*whistles innocently*
Eh, I suppose I should get back to statting minis, huh?

Heh.

I should have some new ones up tomorrow. :D

EDIT: And where'd Mairkurion {tm}'s post go? (Grats on getting the cheap booster, though.)

OK, I will spoilerize what I got, just in case I'm being too much of a show-n-tell kid.

Spoiler:

Fire Titan
Voracious Ice Devil
Hellwasp (Hello, Calistria)
Deathpriest of Orcus
Gnaw Demon
Orc Zombie
Half-elf Assassin
ochre jelly

So the doubles I got are of the usable variety, and I got two good rares plus that hellwasp I've been hungering for.

EDIT: Yeah, there have been some invisible posts and some pages with no posts on them lately, but they appear eventually.

Sovereign Court

Way to go M. P.s. I thought being a "kid" was part of continuing with this hobby beyond childhood, that is—boast away, its taken the right way. I am happy for you.

P.s. Glad to hear Gene is back to work - - this is the easiest project management gig I ever had. *lol*

Heh, heh. Pax, thanks for your endorsement! I gotta stay young somehow.

PS Hellwasp went from being a swarm to being a medium-sized single creature? Maybe we do need a Greater Hellwasp as opposed to the swarm? Or just use a fiendish giant wasp?

*shakes fist*

I bought like twenty (probably more in the realm of sixteen or seventeen) boosters of that set to get hold of that Ice Devil, and I still never got it! You're a lucky one, man; congratulations.

Pax Veritas wrote:

I just need poked on occasion. :p

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:

Heh, I love that thing's paintjob; it looks like a marshmallow. :p

Still, if you'd like, I could add it to the list for statting up. I'd probably just take a standard giant wasp and slap the half-fiend template onto it followed by adding the drone ability. It'd probably be about CR 4.

Ya know, It's the small things that bother me sometimes. I've been wanting that wasp, and then I realize, the hellwasp before was a swarm, and the giant fiendish wasp is large. Ugh. Whatsa matter with those 4reaks? Now I'm trying to remember if I've seen anything about Paizo publishing anything about special Calistria wasps that might make me feel better. A nice, nasty, medium wasp of Calistria...

Yeah, the F.G. wasp is a CR 4. In all its largeness...(and slowness)

I guess something has to balance out getting the ice devil. :D BTW, while the sculpting is pretty good, I may have my daughter repaint it some day--it's not so great.

And I have no idea what kinda marshmallows Gene's been eatin!

Yeah, the size difference is certainly a bugger. I'll probably just drop it down to medium size for sake of being able to use the darn thing; the large sized bulette is another case of miniaturization. The lack of bee/wasp swarms is also a large annoyance to me as well; sadly there aren't very many third party miniatures that fill the gap, either.

*sigh*

Such is the new age I suppose.

Heh, I actually repainted mine. A quick wash with a dark brown or black ink does wonders for the thing.

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:

Marshmallows of the peep variety. :D

Liberty's Edge

And here's the juvenile (large-sized) bulette:
http://www.mediafire.com/?kzdomtmzjmn

Up next is the hellwasp.

And I do have one question: once this batch is done I intend to update the bestiary. What format do you want the monsters in? Do you want them to be one monster per page or would you like them to just get in where they get in (like in the Monster Manual)?

---

Everything to Date:

My own vote is one per page.
I'm not sure I've found my favorite format yet--or at least settled on it. What do you think of the Pf format?

Liberty's Edge

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:

I like the Pathfinder format, at least the one that's used in the Adventure Paths. My statblocks are actually based on Paizo's to some degree. Still, I don't think I'd be able to put nearly as much information about the monsters in (ecology, habitat, that kind of stuff); fluff is admittedly my weak point when it comes to creature design. Though, I am thinking on starting to include relevant knowledge check based information.

That's a really handy feature!

While I'm obviously not a fan of 4e, one of these days I'm going to take a good look at their format. On first glance, the design seems real clean, but this may be due more to graphic differences.

Liberty's Edge

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:

That it is; the only downside is that it means I have to go through all of my previously done monsters and add it. Not to mention that I'll have to re-upload everything and relink it all. I may do it after I've gotten the bestiary updated then update the bestiary once more after I've added the knowledge information.

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:

The 4E monster formatting is indeed sound, however, monsters aren't statted like PCs anymore; they have their own system. Still, it has merit I suppose, I do really like how 4E has magic items set up.

I'm not sure stating monsters and pcs in very different formats would fit very well with 3.5/Pf logic.

Are you happy with your host? Have you considered publishing/sharing through Google Docs?

Liberty's Edge

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:

I agree; with how 3.5/PF is designed it just doesn't work

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:

Yeah, mediafire gets the job done. I may look into Google Docs, however.

Dang, Gene. I just discovered that the Deathknell set had a burning skeleton way back when. Did you take a look at that?

Also, started watching eBay (dangerous, since I don't need to spend the $). Is it just me, or are there a lot more minis available these days? Are people dumping their collections, or their hordings? I also wondered if the prices on some of these haven't come down some.

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:

Man. I like that one a lot more than the new one. I actually didn't know that they even existed prior to the most recent one (I started collecting with the Underdark set so I don't know much of what exists before it).

I think people are dumping their collections. Since Wizards has basically given the D&D Skirmish game the axe I doubt many are going to play anymore. This is of course a great time for people that get the minis for the RPG.

If you're looking for a good site for purchasing singles I recommend coolstuffinc.com, I've been using them since I started buying singles and they're really reliable.

Sovereign Court

Woah.... I have a lot of catching up to do, so, here it goes:

>I still can't locate a handful of new flaming skeletons (for some reason they're hard to come by), but I plan to use the handful of old flaming skeletons with Gene's stats.

>I agree that watching ebay is a good idea. A lot of people are indeed "dumping" due to the economy and all, plus their value still seems to be increasing.

>M: If you're looking for a particular mini, just let me know. I am a member of the secret halfling city-underground network and know how you can get specific ones without purchasing so many boosters...

>I laughed-out-loud when I saw the word 4reaks written. It provided me with a brief, cathartic feeling. I am a good person, and I treat people nice, but I loathe what they've done to our game.

>Format: Gene, I like your Pathfinderesque format. Please keep up the good work. One beast to a page please, for DMs like me who enjoy printing single pages and writing right on them during combat. Any attempt to potentially create a two-page overlap might drive me nuts and kill too many unnecessary trees in the process.

>Gene - I would caution about including additional fluff. I enjoy using the creature stats in the way you've been doing them. Right now, the unique aspect of what you've been doing is providing an OGL solution for those who want to use select 4e minis. And this, for what it is, is brilliant. Once you start stepping down the path of including descriptions that overlap some otherwise "protected" GSL content - there may be grounds to shut us down. I guess we are walking, imho, a fine line — but a very open and legal one right now, afaik, but I don't know much about legalities at all.

>I am hereby sending both Gene and M. virtual peeps, the yummy marshmallow variety, for all the hard work you've been doing. I plan to play test/use the mini-bulletes in an upcoming game, so I'll let you know how it goes. Please keep up the great work, Gene!

*places two virtual stacks of peeps in the computer and hits SEND*

Ah...peeps...on translucent green plastic grass...takes me back to my young days on Easter, surrounded by people, alas, now gone...
Thanks for the responses, guys. I'll come back to them, esp. if I get any money to spend. I will allow myself to say that while some of the lower priced minis seemed a little higher in price, the high end minis looked like they had dropped in price. But this eBay observation is far from scientific. Other options are much appreciated.

Sovereign Court

I picked up the web golem last night - was this one on our list?

I wanted it to be added eventually, but I don't rem.
Did you change your mind about how it looks?
Edit: Nope, we talked about it, but it wasn't queued.

Liberty's Edge

The web golem's on the que. Once I get the next four monsters up (bringing the total to 26) and update the bestiary, I move onto the last four monsters which are:
Web Golem (CR 9)
Shadow Flayer (CR 10)
Thoon Hulk (CR 12)
Angel of Retribution (CR 15)

The list in its entirety (as of now) is as follows:
Hellwasp (CR 4)
Howling Hag (CR 5)
Phaseweb Spider (CR 7)
Soulrider Devil (CR 7)
Web Golem (CR 9)
Shadow Flayer (CR 10)
Thoon Hulk (CR 12)
Angel of Retribution (CR 15)

---

Apologies for the lack of updates. I've been in a bit of a slump lately but I'm working on getting back into the monster stating groove.

Sovereign Court

Hey, thanks Gene! Slumps come and go - that's why you have M and Pax to keep bringin ya back. I know we appreciate it!

Yes, I changed my mind on the Web Golem - just cause I think the concept is cool, and have an urge to see what crazy powers Gene will stat up for us!

Also, if I haven't said it yet, Gene, nice work on the Bestiary.

-Pax-

I stand corrected!

Sovereign Court

My players seemed to love fighting the Gnaw Demons last Monday. The Bleed effect is perfect for Pathfinder. And they actually had the party on the run before they could fight back. I really enjoyed the hunger teleport thing.

I couldn't tell if it required line of sight to where it needed to get to, so I just ruled within the radius. Gene - let me know if I'm mistaken according to your concept. Thanks again.

I look forward to getting the new stats and the revised bestiary. Thanks for spicing up my game Gene!

Pax Veritas wrote:

Since it's a higher level monster I've got some pretty nifty ideas thus far. It'll of course have the abilities listed, but I intend to have it spit out spider swarms as it becomes damaged and eventually erupt into a giant spider (and a swarm or two) upon death. I'm looking forward to stating it up. :D

Pax Veritas wrote:

You did it right, I was intending for it to be a semi-instinctual thing, they just -know- where their food is. Glad to have caused some grief to your players! >: )

---

I'm glad you fellows are finding my restats useful, I should have the next batch (should be the Hellwasp and Howling Hag) up later today (during the PM hours) or sometime Monday at the latest.

Sovereign Court

Gene, you are the man!

Brilliant ideas for the web golem. I definatly support the decision for the 'instinctual' teleport for the Gnaw Demons - they play very well that way - and being that these are relatively new ideas gamewise, it really screwed with those who thought they knew everything already, for a result of a lot of surprising fun! Way to go.

I'm feeling pretty excited about this next batch!!!

Glad you're enjyoing them and I'm glad they gave your players grief. I love watching players trip over a monster they've never seen before. :D

Here's a link to the hellwasp:

And here's a link to the howling hag (who came in 1 CR higher than planned):

I should inform you guys that I probably won't have another batch of monsters up 'till this weekend. I've got a game to prep for this coming Thursday and a buddy to see of on Friday. Next on the chopping block are the phaseweb spider (CR 7) and soulrider devil (also CR 7). Once those are done I'll update the bestiary.

Everything to Date:

Sovereign Court

Oh - I am just loving the "chaos" and abyss themes for some of the minis we selected for Gene's chopping block. This fits really well into my current homebrew world/Pathfinder campaign.

Keep 'em comin', Gene. I can't wait to print an authoritative bestiary to replace my miscellaneous pages...

Many thanks for your labors,
-Pax-

Sovereign Court

I've got a set of 5 hellwasps set upon Tinkered Tactics' Combat Tiers - - oooh, I cannot wait to hit the party with these. The only issue: I'll be canceling tomorrow night's game because I'll be working late. Yes, even the dedicated Pax has priorities. I'll be sure to let you know how it goes in the weeks ahead, and I can't wait to see that Web Golem. Good times ahead, eh.

Sovereign Court

I keep singing Phaseweb Spider.... to the tune of Paperback Writer. Its rather fun.

"Phaser-web Spider..."

Sovereign Court

.... even better! Good add M.

I wish I had stat blocks for John, Paul, Ringo, and George as they would appear with about 10 levels of classes. You know, in the Barony of Beetles. hehe

Sovereign Court

Where it began... I can't begin to knowin', but I know its going strong. Was it the spring? Then the spring became summer... Who'd have believed you'd come along....????

The stats were written by a man named Gene,
But he disappeared after writing-up the Phaser Web Spider...
Phaser Web Spider!

Sovereign Court

Neat... The Beverly Hillbeatles!

Oh... A Hillbeatle!

If Gene shows up, we can have him make stats for the notorious and much feared CR4 Hillbeatle

*lol*

NO! I'm still doing Paperback Writer! :@
("It's based on a novel by a man name Lear...")

But's since you've brought up hillbillies and there's still no sign of Gene:

"Where, where, are you tonight?
Why did you leave the conversions alone?
I'd searched the web over and thought I'd found true stats
You did the hellwasp and SPPPPT! you was gone!"

Sovereign Court

..."Let me take you down, cause I'm going to.... 3.5 fields,
4e is not real.
But we can use their miniatures!
3.5 fields forever!"

FTW.
I demand Gene by conjured by all this singing!

Liberty's Edge

So I s'pose I 'ought to explain myself, eh?

Well, a few weeks back I lost internet because they had to replace lines out by my house. Following that a foul plague went through the household and I've been in and out of the hospital for the past couple weeks (nasty fevers, stomach sickness, you name it) and I'm just finally getting over it. Likewise, they've only finally finished fixing the lines out here (I've been bumming internet off the local library up to this point) and so I should be a bit more active within a day or so.

I should likewise get back to stating things up.

As for the Beatles... :D (I WILL stat that hillbeatle!)

The Return of the Gene

Spoiler:
Glad to see you back Gene! Wow. What a miserable snowballing. Hope you're feeling lots better. Take care of yourself: ya know, rest, liquids, etc. Don't worry about us--we were just being paranoid and impatient...mostly paranoid. But of course, if stating monsters is part of your healing process, well...

I'm staying alive. I suppose. :p

I should have something new for you guys up in a bit.

Also! Pax asked me to tell you that he didn't chase me off. ;)

Just leave a sealed

Spoiler:
"Pax did it."
envelope somewhere with my address on it. In case of an "accident," it will come to me.

Sovereign Court

Glad we're all back in business! Hooray for Gene & get well soon:)

Oh.... since its just us three in here, have you noticed Joela's anti-PAIZO/pro-4e posts? They're always bringing in this news or that news from EnWorld or someother dumb thread elsewhere - as though I care what someone else on another site is writing about on their messageboards! To really top things off, he usually points out something unsubstantiated about PAIZO that is negative, and something positive about 4e. And he's posting on 3e boards...

Okay - My rant is over. *breathes*
In with the good air, out with the bad air.

Yeah I've noticed 'em. Since this is a public forum, it's his right to post that stuff and It's my right to ignore it. I've gotten a few good chuckles from some of 'em, though. :p

I wouldn't put too much stock in it, folks that like Paizo will like them regardless and there's likely no changing folks that don't like Paizo as I've found most gamers to be quite strong-willed when it comes to liking or not liking something.

That like getting gray hair for us flesh-sacks?

And the phaseweb spider is done:
Spider, Phaseweb

Twenty-five monsters has just been reached! It's time for a bestiary update!!!

Now, I'm not gonna lie to you fellows, this update is probably going to take a bit. I've got to go through all twenty-five entries up to this point with a fine-toothed comb and hopefully fix any errors I've made (which I know are there *twitch*) and I'm also going to be adding blurbs for knowledge checks to each entry that will look something like as follows:
Knowledge (Knowledge Type Goes Here)
DC X - This is a MONSTER NAME, a foul X from Y that likes to Z! This result reveals all CREATURE TYPE information.
DC Y - This reveals more information
DC Z - This reveals yet more information

They will of course be in a nicely formatted table, though. I think it'll look nice. Also included will be a table of contents (duh), it'll be fully bookmarked for easy .pdf browsing (another duh, at least in my books :p), I'll include a list of monsters by CR as well.

As with the last one I'll try to dig up something spiffy-looking for a cover page (a full-page this time).

Cheers,
-Gene

One of the many things that I dislike about 4E is that they've paired down the maximum creature size to huge. Because of this, some monsters that should be quite large (like the bulette and tthunderblast Cyclone) are smaller and monsters like the poor galeb duhr got the rough end of the stick and became medium.

I was browsing through this thread and came across this. I don't know if it'll have any impact on your work, but the above isn't true. A number of dragons are gargantuan-sized, not to mention the Tarrasque, just off the top of my head. It's true that some creatures are smaller than their previous incarnations, but there's no hard limit on size set at huge.

You are indeed correct and I mis-spoke, I'd originally intended to say gargantuan, gods know why I said huge instead. Thanks for clarifying for me, regardless.
