Kinda. I've lived/worked there for most of the last decade-and-a-half.

I have emailed the following haiku(?).

Hey charles,

I know it feels shit to have something you have worked hard on rejected, but if you take it to heart, you'll just make your self feel worse. It's also kind of unfair on Mr. Frost, who is only doing his job.

Believe me, i know what it is like to have ideas but not be able to convey them easily. Hell i live trapped inside my own skull thanks to near crippling dyslexia. I test in the top 4% of human intelligence, yet can i write well? I don't believe so.

Stick at it, work hard and maybe you'll get to the stage where your work is good enough to publish. But getting your self all depressed wont help with that.

It's true. Anyone who's getting into the freelancing business is GOING to have more rejections than accepted adventures. I've got a folder at work that has all of my Dungeon rejection letters; I was submitting adventures since issue #1, and over the course of the first 80 issues I must have submitted something along the lines of 30 adventures. Of those 30, six were accepted. Of those six, two were rejected after I wrote them and sent them in. Eventually, I managed to impress the editors enough with the combination of tenacity and ideas and writing and dependability with deadlines that I started getting assignments, which was pretty nifty... but I didn't get to that point without wading through dozens of rejection letters AND some rejected manuscripts.

You can't let it get to you if you're gonna be a writer, really. Rejections WILL happen. The best thing to do when one happens is to write a new proposal ASAP and send it in. Don't obsess about getting everything right. After all, dozens, perhaps hundreds of people are going to be rejected as well; only one will be accepted. And if you don't even send in a proposal, it can't be accepted at all.

Not that I'm going to ding someone for not knowing that incredibly tiny bit of Paizo editorial lore.

Isn't the apostrophe afterwards only appropriate on plural nouns? I.E. The dogs' bones (bones that belong to many dogs) as opposed to the dogs's bones? (which just red underlined for me)

Like most things with the English Language, the right answer depends on what source you go to. For Paizo, that source is the Chicago Manual of Style, and it says that the proper way to do apostrophes for words is to add 's after singular words (even if the singular word ends in ss), and just an ' after plurals. So:

James's
Stevens's
princess's
Kyuss's

All the above are singulars, all 's.

snakes'
baboons'
princesses'

All the above are plural; all just '.

Two exceptions exist. Moses and Jesus get just the ' after their name, not a 's. I'm not sure why. They just do. And since we are VERY unlikely to ever need to talk about anything Moses or Jesus owned in a Paizo product... it's easiest to not worry about those two exceptions.

In the end I decided against submitting either of them; I'd not done enough work on #20, and although personally I was happy with what I'd written for #19 I'm confident it wouldn't have found Josh's approval.

Maybe next time. Good luck to the rest of you.

You can read Joshua's mind?

I personally don't mind that you didn't enter, less competition increases my chances, but I do think that you are going to miss out on some good advice.

Actually, I can read Joshua's mind as well.

He will reject me for the following reasons:

1) If he reviews the wrong version: spelling mistake
2) They're not ready to explore a certain part of Absalom's surroundings in a Society adventure
3) Not creepy enough
4) Like point 2, only a different part
5) He won't like the NPCs name
6) He won't like that I involve a major NPC

I could be wrong ofcourse ;>

Hasn't it got something to do with ye olde English when the monks wrote the Bible by hand? (I could be wrong)

Callum,

I second what James is saying. Think of it in these terms...

Something like 90% of would-be freelancers claim they want to write something, but never even get started. Sounds like you made it past that stage.

Of the 10% remaining, something like 90% of those guys self-edit as they go and agonize over whether it's "good enough" and so they give up and don't bother to submit. Sounds like you fell out during this stage.

Of the remainder, something like 90% of them miss the mark with their proposal...some due to mechanical/grammar errors...but some just because their particular idea didn't fully resound with the editor. In other words, it wasn't a bad idea...it just wasn't the best one. It's not an indictment of one's writing ability just because yours doesn't get accepted.

So, once you go through those exponential trim-downs of all would-be freelancers, you can see that if you make it to the end, you're among some pretty select company to begin with. Even if you get rejected at that last stage, it's still a badge-of-honor to have run the writing gauntlet. It can only help you and improve your confidence. Because, if someone like Josh is going to take the time to give feedback on every entry, that's like gold. A lot of publishers don't have the time or inclination to help you become a better writer. Paizo is to be applauded for that.

So, with all of that in mind, I personally think you should seriously have submitted your proposal. It only helps you to do so, regardless of the outcome.

Sincerely,
--Neil

Noooooooo!

The artifact! I forgot about inserting an artifact, no adventure can exist without one. I am doomed!

Seconded. Take it step-by-step. If Josh says that he did not read past the first paragraph, heed why and make your next submission so he does. Then after that, move onto the next thing. The word is 'practice'.

Clear!

It can be anything ;>

Artifact:

1. any object made by human beings, esp. with a view to subsequent use.
2. a handmade object, as a tool, or the remains of one, as a shard of pottery, characteristic of an earlier time or cultural stage, esp. such an object found at an archaeological excavation.
3. any mass-produced, usually inexpensive object reflecting contemporary society or popular culture: artifacts of the pop rock generation.
4. a substance or structure not naturally present in the matter being observed but formed by artificial means, as during preparation of a microscope slide.
5. a spurious observation or result arising from preparatory or investigative procedures.
6. any feature that is not naturally present but is a product of an extrinsic agent, method, or the like: statistical artifacts that make the inflation rate seem greater than it is.

Ah, but you can always employ someone to take dictation for you... :)

I went over the advice from last time and tried to improve, asking somebody else to read it, checking for passive voice, eliminating words finishing 'ess', putting some backstory & summary up front, but meh.... I just couldn't fit it in the word count. Not without producing dross.
The only point to submitting this time was to get away from the 'once but never again terror-monkey of doom*'. :(

I don't know... is hours of MSWord editing and rewriting and editing (plus time spent in consultation with others) worth it just to dispose of one terror-monkey of doom?

*As in 'monkey that needs getting off your back', but a really bad monkey... nope try adding tentacles and making it fire-breathing.... now you're getting close to what that sort of monkey is like... :)

Of course not, silly! Plurals that don't end in an "S" do get an 's at the end if they're possessive. Just one of the many ways that irregular plurals are evil and sinister.

Just to chime in on the apostrophe-ess issue (because I'm trying to avoid real work):

I've always just followed the principle that possessives should end in a S-sound. Most plurals already end in an added 's' sound, so there is no extra added s. Singulars and (non-S ending) irregular plurals get an added 'S' (even if the singular already ends in S, since it is necessary to distinquish it from just saying the word.) I treat names as singular.
wolf->wolf's
wolves->wolves'
sheep->sheep's

On the other hand, I remember (vaguely) from high school english it getting very tricky with surnames: Obviously a first name is singular, but a last name like 'Flanders' may debatably be already plural, leading to things like me getting a extra s on my first name but not my last name. (It can get EVEN WORSE when referring to a group of people with the same last name.)
"Ned Flanders's" but "Rod and Todd Flanders'"?

Personally I find that to be a bit complicated and requires me to know way too much about the derivation of peoples' names. So I use "'s" with names unless it would just sound way too silly read aloud.

Keep in mind I am not qualified to dispense grammatical advice. I'm just expounding to avoid going back to work.

December is so far away.

I won't be submitting again.

So yeh, in the age of the Internet I can self-publish if I want do something for little to no compensation because at least I'll get creative control.

I wrote a longer post, but I'll erase all that and keep it simple. I learned recently the editors are writing the checks and holding the cards. I didn't get everything I wanted my first Paizo adventure, but no one does. Certainly not if my name isn't Logue or Cordell or Mona. I was paid, and I was treated with a fair amount of respect. If I have the same experience ten more times, it might be a good start for me. If I can't take it, then I'll never be a Logue or a Cordell or a Mona.

Let me pay some proper respect: Or a Baur.

Folks who can't humble themselves and see these calls as an opportunity are just clearing the way for those of us who can treat it like a job.

But your previous post got me interested: you've written a new module for Paizo? Pathfinder? Chronicle? Society?
