My players wanted to do D&D game had pirate theme, so naturally we decided to play Savage Tide adventure path. Right now my players just started 'The Sea Wyvren's wake'. Anyway I thought I share some minatures I painted for some the npcs.

Lavinia Vanderboren
Rowyn and Harliss

Sovereign Court

I recognize the other two minis but I don't think I know the Lavinia one. Is it a reaper mini? Could we get the model names? Cool minis BTW.

Guy Humual wrote:

Lonnia, Female Duelist, #2981 is model I used for Lavina.

Maria Roseblade, #2645 for Rowyn and Isabella Florentina, Female Swashbuckler (OOP), #3130 for Harliss

I found that the Pirate Zombie and, to a lesser extent, the Ancient Mariner from the HorrorClix line were great for savage pirates, though they are rare figures, so a little pricey. However, I’m finding myself at a loss for a good option for a large number of male pirates for the bigger battle sequences (females are easy, but not a lot of males). Others on this board have made recommendations, but none really fit my budget – especially since quantity is a factor, as is overseas shipping.

Oh, and the HorrorClix Stoker figure is perfect for Sutolore in the Tomoachan Ruins. Alternately there is the HeroClix Man Bat figure.

Have you seen the pirate figure from D&D minatures line? Its male and a common. Link

Have you seen this for Drevoraz - I can't find my photos of my painted one, but he's perfect.

Wow, that IS perfect! And I hadn't seen all these pirate minatures before. Some of them are perfect for our PCs.

Yeah!

I changed Drevoraz and gave him a pistol - he critted the spellthief from the landing and almost killed her before the party got near them! He also got to hold Lavinia at gunpoint in typical hostage standoff style - great moment.

I know what you're thinking. "Did he pack the black powder with a cotton wad and another bullet after he last fired?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a flint-lock, the most powerful handgun in the world, and might put a whole in your head if it doesn’t misfire and the bullet flies straight, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

ROFL! Chokes on coffee. sprays monitor etc etc etc. Nice one!

The bullywugs had also captured the Genasi (who had wavy hair, moving like seaweed under water) and Drevoraz shaved him with his cutlass.
Needless to say they didn't keep him alive :-)

Sorry, I'm in a weird mood today!

WotC actually has a Varragoin miniature out now (they call it a shadowhunter bat though).

OMG! There is a fig from that same line called a Warforged Infiltrator. It's Doctor Doom!!!

Apropos, since the Fantastic Four were modeled after elementals.

Huh, I never thought about that. The "air" and "water" is a bit of a stretch (no pun intended) but I can dig it. Good call!

Thanks for the mini ideas, I am currenty in the process of selecting minis for the baddies.

Though I have no idea what mini I could use to represent a phanaton. Im thinking the Heroclix Superapes:Igor and then cut the head off...but what could I replace it with?

Any better Ideas?

Bob

Prolly some cutsie hello kitty panda things at your local teeney-bopin mall accessory store.........

Well, I wracked my brain on this one. I had a thought that maybe Ewoks from the Star Wars Miniature line - same company as the D&D minis after all. Would you believe there are no Ewoks in their miniature game?? They have Gungans and Clone troopers and every other kind of stupid prequel-related figure, but no Ewoks. Sorry.

I don't suppose there is a flying squirrel miniature in a recent D&D set that I've overlooked?

Robert Hradek wrote:

I was going to use ewoks, but they they were always out when I order them, so I just used goblins (at that scale, details are pretty obscured anyway)

Troy Pacelli wrote:

There are actually several (here, also Wicket ).

Since they are down to 49 cents each (and there are plenty in stock), it's probably worthwhile now.

I'm working on putting together a listing of every character/creature that the party interacts with that may require a mini seperated by adventure. Currently it lists them based on "worst case scenerio" su ch as requiring X total thieves or y zombie pirates, etc. Just in case all of them get involved in some way. The problem I have is things like small monstrous crabs, Ixixtxchils(spelling?) and various things of this nature, not to mention wanting to somehow mod minis to show bosses and named ones (such as the Bullywug named characters vs hunters). How would/did you handle these odd creatures?

It's great that I have the EXACT SAME FIGS representing Lavinia and Harliss. What are the odds?!

Actually, I did two Lavinia figs. Early "noble" Lavinia in Sasserine had a different mini, also a Reaper, "Dark Heaven 2859 Melisande Wavecutter, Female Pirate". Once she learned how to use a sword a little better, I switched to that one you used.

I'll post a link to pics sometime.

There are plenty of Reaper figs to use for the big demons too...

Orcus http://www.reapermini.com/FigureFinder#detail/02646
Demogorgon http://www.reapermini.com/FigureFinder#detail/02716
Charon (I know not a demon) http://www.reapermini.com/FigureFinder#detail/02696

I'll post some more later. I also use lots of painted D&D figs for the grunts. "Cloud Reavers" make great generic pirates for instance.

So how big are those reaper minis, specifically the "orcus" and "Demogorgan"? I mean are they huge size (comparable to D&D minis huge) Thanks

Stewart Perkins wrote:

Crabs and manta rays can often be found in $1 bags/tubes of plastic underwater sealife (from dollar stores, Fred-Meyer, etc.). I've obtained a collection of both from these places.

Stewart Perkins wrote:

I frequently modify miniatures by using a (dollar store) hot glue-gun and weapons/bits from other miniatures.

Don't be afraid to chop up a few DDM common miniatures (many are worth only about 19 cents anyway... well worth the 'sacrifice').

Yeah, they're big. Probably not equivalent to "huge", which is 4x4 square base, but you can put these figs on a base that size and they wouldn't look stupid. I don't have these guys painted yet, but over the weekend I'll try to take a pic of them on a game mat next to a penny so you get the size reference.

I'll also try to get pics of those other guys.

Those are sweet Troy! I almost wish I were back a few months in the adventure, I would definitely have bought some. As it is, We're likely beyond their useful life.

OT:

Ironically, I just happened on that site while searching for something for a completely different reason – not D&D related at all (though still in the realm of geekdom). I have a Klingon party coming up in a few weeks and I wanted to dress up my Pipius Claw dish with plastic lobster and crab legs/claws. Literally, at the same time I was looking for big plastic lobsters, Stewart was posting the quote above. I know – nobody cares – but it was such a cool coincidence, I had to share.

Back on topic:
Yeah, I’m past that point, too, and I really hate Ixix-whatthefrackevers, mostly because of the stupid name, so I’ll probably never use them again. However, one of the characters has a Cloak of the Manta Ray, so I might just get one for that. Might as well, if I do get the things I went to site for in the first place.

I have an old Warhammer Lizardman army I haven't fielded in years, so I just used old skink figs from that. Not very accurate, but the size and armament was roughly correct, and there are times when you just have to have a little suspension of disbelief. I try to be MOSTLY accurate with the figs, but a little fudging here or there is ok with us at least. I showed them the pics from the mag and it was good enough. They were only on the board for one night anyway. :)

Funny, I have most of those toys already.

Though I prefer using Reapers manta ray
for the Ixits because the Ixits are supposed to be small sized, which makes those toys too big.

Unfortunately Reaper no longer sells individual minis from packs, so you would have to get the whole set.

As for Phanatons I have been tossing up between Crocodile Game's baboon with a head modification, but have been leaning towards Wizkids Super-Apes: Igor with a different head.

Any Ideas for a Rhagodessa. I have been using a DDM Deathjump Spider, but would like something that is closer.

I like the ankheg for thiss except there's a bit of a size difference. The Ankheg and mini are Large size and the Rhadogessa are medium. But if your willing to Handwave that or even bump them up a size then I think they make good Deathbugs.

Anybody know of a particularly suitable Iggwilv fig?

would have to be a very cool raven haired spellcasting lady.... Probably want to go Reaper or another pewter painted mini for her sheer awesomeness, pre painted minis just won't cut it :P

I'm using this one for Lashonna in AoW, but I think she'd also work well as Iggwilv.

Well, I've done a fair bit of looking, and have come up with 4 decent possibilities for an Iggwilv fig. 3 are by Reaper and one by Dark Sword (from the Caldwell Masterworks Set)

http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/2990/sku-up/02990
http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/3150/sku-up/03150
http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/3193/sku-up/03193

I think in the case of the 3rd one (Reaper 3193) I'd cut the big sword off. What do you guys think?

And I just saw Luz's post. Somehow I missed that as I was doing this reply. Apparently he likes Reaper 3150 too. :)

After that, I'll turn my attention to finding a good Malcanthet. I have not been impressed so far with the succubi I've come across. I might just have to find a non-demonic female and put wings on her - I do have some spare demon wings that would work.

I really like 3150 for Iggwilv, Painted right I think it most closely resembles what I think of her, and have seen.

As for Malcanthet, If your going the cool chick and adding wings anyway, I think 2990 is a good base for her... she looks good enough to me.

Stewart Perkins wrote:

The Rhadogessa from "The Lightless Depths" is large, and from my readings I was to understand that was it's regular, full grown size.

If you're running "There is no honor" though, it's true that you'll need a medium, so deathjump spider does indeed seem like your best bet.

Do you anticipate *needing* miniatures for those personalities?

Yes...I like to have miniatures for all the big personalities in a campaign, whether there is combat anticipated or not. I like to set the scene with the miniatures.

Besides, I've found that if you only use miniatures when you anticipate combat, you subconsciously "train" your players to have different expectations for a given situation. If you don't use minis in a given situation, the players automatically assume that it's NOT a combat situation, and that changes how they respond to it.

For the Bar'lgura I used the DDM Taers and I used the large sized Bar'lgura for a suped up Olangru.

I used Tlaximec Battlelord for Chief Achachutli and the Skinwalker Acolytes (even though the figure is large, but against my party they needed the boost!)

I use Crunch-waffle's Waggamaephs... this gives a good pic for scale:

there are also some more Waggamaephs that are interacting with items like a medium-sized sword or shield and one that dual wields a pair of little knives I think. I think they're perfect.

I too was thinking of the maephs...they just aren't quite right for me.
