DM Cobalt's Unshackled City

Game Master Craig Mercer

Our heroes are based in Cauldron, the northernmost city in Varisia. There they try to survive missions for the city, intriques, and maybe even save the world... or maybe not.

Darian puts a finger to his lips as he looks back at Soth, then crouches a little lower and moves behind a tree indicating that the others should do the same.

Everyone stealth, let Felix scout it out and relay the situation to us. Then we can make a quick plan. The stealth rolls shouldn't matter too much. With distance and cover penalties the goblins shouldn't be able to see us. It's just important that we mention that we are stealthed (so seeing us isn't automatic)

So far, all you hear is the noise over the background roaring noise. No one has seen anything yet, there is bush and folaige currently blocking line of sight. People are trying to hide.
Init is a little premature.
Is someone going to sneak foreward for a look?

I've been following Darian's lead, and waiting for Felix to scout it out.

Six goblins stand in the middle of the path. They seem to be paying attention to some sort of animal that they have trapped between them, poking it with their dog slicers.

GM Roll:
1d20 - 10 ⇒ (14) - 10 = 4

They haven't noticed the three of you stealthing up yet.

How far away are they, DM?

The group first heard them and stopped about 60' away.
The group that crept closer to spy on them has closed to 30'.

I'd still like to try a Detect Magic scan. If they are 60 ft away, even with a waterfall blocking sight, all I might be able to sense is the presence or absence of magic in the area (60ft cone), not what is actually radiating it, what school, or anything like that. But, if I can not, no worries.

hp 25 | AC 13 | T 13 | FF 10 | CMD 14 | F +2 | R +4 | W +4 | Init +5 | Per +6 |

"Goblins... Should we attack while were still unnoticed?" Terra asks quietly trying to decide if one of here area spells is worth using now or worth saving for their hideout.

Soth-Loren: No waterfall is blocking line of sight, just trees and undergrowth.
Yes, you can try Detect Magic.

Basically, the party is on a path though the forest, which bends and turns as it follows the small stream on the right-hand side of the path.
Soth-Loren, Terra, and Darian are on the side of the path, screened by trees and undergrowth from the goblins 60' ahead.
Felix, Taravel, and Emyeralda have snuck up closer, and are spying on the goblins from a screen of undergrowth 30' from the goblins.
The goblins haven't noticed anyone yet, because they seem to be busy with something on the ground in the path.

"I think we can take a few goblins. Who's with me? Let's go get these suckers." Tara prepares to engage the creatures.

Female Human (Varisian) Magus (Hexcrafter/Kapenia Dancer) 1

Emyralda nods in agreement and levels her crossbow to take aim at the goblins. She waits for a moment, listening for the pause between her own heartbeats, and squeezes the weapon's trigger to send a bolt streaking toward one of the goblins.

Light Crossbow Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 3

Total Damage Potentially Inflicted: 7 hp.

As the crossbow is fired, Tara takes the opportuni to charge the goblins.

Init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13

"Dammit! Too far!" Darian gripes as the crossbow bolt is fired. He rushes through the undergrowth and out onto the path.

I'm guessing the foliage counts as rough terrain, so we can't charge. I'll triple-move 60 feet forward and position myself within Reach distance of the goblins.

Actually this would be the surprise round, with the party gaining surprise. Everyone gets 1 action, not a full round. The goblins are flatfooted.

GM roll:
G1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
F1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
SL1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16
T1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

Init is:
Emyralda
Felix
Soth-Loren
Goblins
Darian
Taravel
Terra

The situation is the party is on a path though the forest, which bends and turns as it follows the small stream on the right-hand side of the path.
Soth-Loren, Terra, and Darian are on the side of the path, screened by trees and undergrowth from the goblins 60' ahead. Stepping onto the path is a 5' move, but will put you in clear terrain. Going through the trees and undergrowth counts as difficult terrain. You still have to move to 30' to have a clear line of sight on the goblins (a bend in the path).
Felix, Taravel, and Emyeralda have snuck up closer, and are spying on the goblins from a screen of undergrowth 30' from the goblins. The undergrowth does not count as difficult terrain, but does provide light cover for people hiding behind it.
The stream is basicly very difficult terrain, and puts an edge on the battlefield to the right side.

Emyralda's crossbow bolt finds it's mark, and the goblin goes down without a sound.

Felix is next.

DM, this is my first fight with you. Should I post my actions now, and you fit it in, or will you do the gobbies first, then I should post after?

Taravel; You can post your actions now, because the goblins are surprised.
Usually, I take it mostly player by player, because a player's actions will affect others that go later.

Tara pulls her Longspear, ready to advance on the goblins the next round.

Felix fires two arrows in rapid succession. The first hits its mark, dropping the goblin, but the second flies over its falling body.

Soth-Loren utters Bless, giving the party a +1 to their attacks.

The goblins, surprised, stand around looking at their two fallen companions.

Darrian steps out onto the path and moves closer to the goblins.

Taravel readies her longspear, and Terra (although currently out of sight of the goblins) readies her bow.

Round 1
Emyralda is up first, then Felix and Soth-Loren. Then the goblins will finally get a chance to notice.

Female Human (Varisian) Magus (Hexcrafter/Kapenia Dancer) 1

Round One:

Emyralda re-loads her crossbow and fires at another flat-footed goblin.

Move action to re-load. Standard action to fire.

Whispering to the others as he passes, "We needeth to keep one alive this time fr questioning."

I will just double move (60ft) to close with it, (if I can reach) and draw my blade on the way. I'm not attacking, just getting as close as I can. "Surender, fiend, and we shalt let thee live."

"Oops." Darian said half-heartedly.

"Honestly, I really doubt there's anything a goblin would tell us that would actually be helpful."

Pinned in the road by a foot trap is a small fox. It has been stabbed and tormented by the goblins, and is barely alive.

Prepairing to cast a spell, Soth-Loren stops and looks about a moment before trying to touch and release the little fox. I'll instead burn a Channel Energy, to heal everyone, and maybe one of the Goblins isn't actually fully dead, just down and out.

2d6 ⇒ (1, 5) = 6

As he does that, he will also do a quick scan of the area, just lookig for any other threats or anything out of the ordinary.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Tara waits to see if anyone tries to heal the beaten up little fox. If not, she tries to get it to drink from one of her healing potions.

HP , AC , CMD , Fort +, Ref +, Will +, Init +

Soth's Channel should be plenty.

Darian kneels an carefully pries the trap open as Soth-Loren's burst of healing washes over them all.

"Everyone back up, please. When it comes to it's going to be mighty touchy."

Pulling Gopher's bowls from his pack he fills dishes with water and dried meat, and stands back to wait.

Soth-Loren's healing is going to wake 5 of the goblins up, since they were just a few points negative. Those who want to can finish off any goblins you don't want, and maybe keep one.

Darian sets the fox free of the trap. It looks around at the party briefly, then at Darian. It then turns to eat and drink from the food that Darian put out for it.

Yes, the Handle Animal was a good choice of skills to use, Darian (as mentioned in the Discussion thread).

Female Human (Varisian) Magus (Hexcrafter/Kapenia Dancer) 1

If no one else does it, Emyralda will slit the throats of four of the goblins to ensure that they are dead before Soth-Loren channels healing energy. I think we're all in agreement that we only need to keep one alive for questioning.

Do any of the goblins have any distinctive features that might influence our choice of which one to keep alive?

Any gear/treasure worth recovering from the goblins? We've killed them, now it's time to take their loot.

Does anyone speak goblin?

Female Human (Varisian) Magus (Hexcrafter/Kapenia Dancer) 1

I don't.
