Karl Edward Wagner's Kane stories

The Exchange

I think there was mention on a thread somewhere here of possibly securing the Kane stories?
Has anything come of that? I was just on EBay looking for a copy of Death Angels Shadow and it was going for around $20.00
Thanks

No news yet, alas. I'm looking into it.

If Paizo is able to do this, you will all be my heroes and I will sing your praises from the mountaintops. I'm lucky enough to have bought a copy of Gods of Darkness (The Complete Novels) when it was still on shelves. Alas, I missed my opportunity to purchase The Midnight Sun (Complete Short Stories), which now averages about $75 for a used copy.

I agree. The Kane stories rock. The novel in particular was hard to locate and VERY expensive. If Paizo can pull this off it'd be a real coup IMO. I think if I had to pick three seminal authors that shaped the S&S sub genre, they'd be: Howard, Leiber & Wagner.

Liberty's Edge

YES PLEASE.

There are so few authors I am as desperate to read more of as Wagner.

I went the opposite way. I bought a copy of Midnight Sun from the Science Fiction Book Club for a relatively low price but couldn't afford Gods of Darkness until it was too late. Fortunately, I have old paperback copies of Bloodstone and Darkness Weaves. I'll sing Paizo's praises too if they can help me complete my collection.

You should hate yourself, you could have sold those books now for good beer money. :)

We could burn you at the stake using piles of Silverheart, heretic.

:)

Meh, everyone has their own tastes, why hate a person for them? Just take it as an object lesson to research going rates on old books before you get rid of them...never know what people are paying good money for.

I'd like to add my voice to the clamor for Karl Edward Wagner's Kane stories.

Thread necromancy in progress.
Please please please let this happen someday! Planet Stories, Kane, two great tastes that taste great together!

I will check in on this again next time we line up a slate of novels.

Hi Erik

If you ever publish the KEW "Kane" novels and stories and you end up needing a kidney, I'll give you one of mine (maybe LOL).

These stories need to be reprinted!!

They have a HUGE following!

Follow the paperback market on Ebay and you'll see that these have one of the highest re-sell prices for paperbacks. And it's most likely because folks want to read these titles and not just bag and save them like other titles.
Even beat up "reading" copies bring good prices!
I don't need to tell you how to do your job, but I bet you would have instant best sellers on your hands if you brought this series back out!

Serious question..
When you choose novels/stories to reprint, do you try to figure out/calculate how many copies a particular title sells?
And if so, how do you do it? Is it purely a gut feeling kind of thing?

Take care and thank you so very much for bringing back so many wonderful
titles!!

Doug

I concur wholeheartedly with Doug.

Wagner has not had a collection dedicated to him for several years. The most recent from Nightshade was in limited numbers and highly sought after. His books go for big sums on ebay and amazon, indicating a lot of interest.

I don't doubt your own enthusiasm, Erik, but if one of the hurdles regarding getting Kane back into print is a perceived ambiguity in the market (be it from the moneymen or whoever), I'll get as many people interested in Wagner and Kane to contribute their interest.

No, no. There's clearly a lot of market interest.

I am certain that a new edition of these books would be profitable.

My understanding is that the Wagner estate is hoping to try and get a movie deal out of the Kane stories.
Because of this they have not been as responsive to companies looking at reprinting the original stories.
It would seem to be a case of the owners holding out for the most lucrative deal they can get.
