More fun than a barroom full of monks, eh?

Six monks walk into a bar. Two through each door.

Three pairs of 1st level monks.
24 point buy.
PRPG Beta rules.
No weapons can be brought into the bar by the monks.

Last team of monks standing levels up.

I will join, if I can get a partner to fight with

Seems like fun!

I'm in.

Well, this looks entertaining.

I'm in.

I'll take Eccentric as my fighting partner! You okay with that?

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2009 Top 8

We'll give it at least a day to see who else we get. This should be fun.

Yes, I'm fine with it.

Also, here's the character sheet for my monk.

Lastly, one quick question for Tarrin. What would be the damage for common bar items like tankards or chairs when used as thrown weapons?

Thanks.

Scarab Sages

I can do this.

Who wants to partner?

Alright, Tallis, here is your partner! I should have a finished character up tonight. Btw, I'm pretty sure improvised weapons are -4 to attack, and damage is equal to what they resemble: shattered beer glass = dagger, chair leg = club, etc.

Terrin, are we expected to just randomly start fighting, or will there be an "instigation".

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2009 Top 8

This is going to be fun.

I'll give you the DCs for jumping from floor to table and from table to table and the stats for various possible improvised weapons as they become significant.

Well, I know that, but I took 'Throw Anything' as one of my feats, so there isn't a penalty, and there aren't many analogs to a stool thrown at someone's head. :)

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2009 Top 8

I'll draft up the list of possible improvised weapons tonight.

You are from rival schools of monks. That is instigation enough.

(I hope it is clear that this is going to be very light on plot.)

Scarab Sages

I think there should be a round of insults before the fighting.

"Your flying rabbit can not compare to the might of my noisy cricket!"

Got six yet?

I think you are five. My guy's gonna be a halfling of the noisy cricket school. Feel free to partner. The other one without a partner is Franz (who is also free to join my school if he wants).

NOISY CRICKET!!!!

HYAAA!

Who wants to partner with a little ball of hurt? :)

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2009 Top 8

One more to join.

Franz, feel free to lure someone in if you have a partner in mind.

;-)

Cool, have added Misthing Gosmack then. Half-Orc Monk of the Noisy Cricket school.

"Me am noisy cricket. You be hear crickets when me am done with you." <cracks knuckles>

Check these over and see if they seem agreeable.

"Any creature that uses an improvised weapon in combat is considered to be nonproficient with it and takes a –4 penalty on attack rolls made with that object." (PRPG p. 100)

Table leg: 1d6* Crit×2 — 2 lb. Bludgeoning
Chair leg: 1d4* Crit×2 — 1 lb. Bludgeoning
Sharp Chair leg: 1d4 Crit×2 — 1 lb. Bludgeoning
Pewter beer stein (thrown): 1d4* Crit×2 10 ft. 1 lb. Bludgeoning
Ceramic beer keg (thrown): 1d8* Crit×2 10 ft. 3 lb. Bludgeoning
Knives: 1d4 Crit19-20/×2 10 ft. 1 lb. Piercing or slashing
Chair: 1d6* ** Crit×2 10 ft. 3 lb. Bludgeoning
Table: 1d8* ** Critx2 10 ft. 6 lb. Bludgeoning
* The weapon deals nonlethal damage rather than lethal damage.
** The chair becomes unusable after doing 6 points of damage and table becomes unusable after doing 8 points.

Breaking a table or chair to gain a weapon is a standard action and requires doing 4 points of damage to the chair or 6 points of damage to the table. No attack roll is necessary.

Dark Archive

Looks good so far.

Should we consider adding 'table,' 'chandelier,' 'bottle of wine,' 'cask of ale' and 'unconcious bar patron' to the list? :)

I will take the initiative and say that Tallis and I are students training from Mr. Fweng's School of the Conniving Bullfrog :)

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2009 Top 8

Some acrobatics checks you might end up making:

Running along the bar: DC 7
Running along the railing (between the raised area at the front and the main room): DC 15

Move through a threatened area 15 + opponent’s base attack bonus
Move through an enemy’s space 20 + opponent’s base attack bonus

Jumping from table to table (due to tippiness and beer puddles):
5 feet 7
10 feet 12
15 feet 17
20 feet 22
Greater than 20 feet +5 per 5 feet

Jumping from floor to table: DC 12

If you fail this check by 4 or less, you can attempt a DC 20 Ref lex save to grab hold of the other side
after having missed the jump. If you fail by 5 or more, you fail to make the jump and fall (or land prone, in the case of a
vertical jump). Creatures with a base land speed above 30 feet receive a +4 racial bonus on Acrobatics checks made to jump
for every 10 feet of their speed above 30 feet.

Again, I submit for your approval.

So, groups are:

1.Tillan + Drunk Monk
2. Misthing + Lil Jake
3. Franz...

We need one more entrant!!

I may add some torches to the bar but not chandeliers. 'Unconscious bar patrons' would tax my artistic skills. (I will not be adjusting the shadows if you throw any torches hehehe).

Casks of ale? I should put some behind the bar. That would be good fun.

One more houserule: Picking up a chair or table counts as 'drawing a weapon'. However, even if you have a BAB of +1, you can not pick up a table as a free action.

Spoiler:

Draw or Sheathe a Weapon

Drawing a weapon so that you can use it in combat, or
putting it away so that you have a free hand, requires
a move action. This action also applies to weapon-like
objects carried in easy reach, such as wands. If your
weapon or weapon-like object is stored in a pack or otherwise
out of easy reach, treat this action as retrieving
a stored item.

If you have a base attack bonus of +1 or higher, you may
draw a weapon as a free action combined with a regular
move. If you have the Two-Weapon Fighting feat, you
can draw two light or one-handed weapons in the time it
would normally take you to draw one.

Houserules look fine by me.

*Lil' Jakie looks up at Misthing...and up... and up*

"I tell you brother... Here is plan.... You go in first, grab them or punch them... then, while they are busy looking at you... I flank unnoticed and... NOISY CRICKET!... I give them one and one and down they go!"

Yep, the house-rules look good.

Also, to my inebriated monk friend, Mr. Fweng's School of the Conniving Bullfrog sounds good to me. The question is, who is Mr. Fweng? For that matter, while I'm on the subject of random existential quandaries, why is a perfectly good bar, filled with perfectly good booze, completely empty except for 3 pairs of monks looking for a fight? Mankind may never know.

Heheheh. Everyone scatters as soon as they see the three rival schools represented. We'll get to that very minimal story line thing later. ;-)

G'Day.

I'm thinking of making a dwarf or Half-Orc Monk. Looks like I still need a partner though...

Tarren: Anything in the rules is okay? Tempting...
Any other equipment we might be allowed to bring into the bar?

Tallis Kotellos wrote:

Have you forgotten our lessons, brother?! Mr. Fweng is the most accomplished monk to ever live. After trying out the Noisy Cricket style of fighting, he decided it was not to his liking and created his very own fighting style, the Conniving Bullfrog. His turning from the Nosiy Cricket has instigated many turf wars between the rival factions. Legend says that despite creating the style hundreds of years ago, Fweng is still alive, encased inside a giant statue of a toad, left to forever meditate, and that at the end of the world, he shall emerge with The Greatest Move To Have Ever Been.

What do you mean by "anything in the rules"? ;-) PRPG rules. 1st level monks. No racial hit die. No other equipment (all weaponry must be found in the bar).

So there is no point in starting gold, because we can't bring in potions or poisons that would give us an advantage?

Tarren Dei wrote:

Improved Unarmed Strike: Bonus feat for being a first level monk

Improved Initiative: 1st level feat
Throw Anything: Human bonus feat
Scorpion Strike: Monk bonus feat

Like the Ability stats of this little fellow here... They are within the rules (PF-RPG Beta, 24 Points.), but extreme to the end.

Huh, I glossed over the 24 pt. thing. I'd only used 20! Yay. More points!

No potions, poisons, or starting gold. Maybe in later iterations of this game, I might allow things like that. My intention at this point is that the winning team (the team with one player conscious) plays a role in defining the next round by suggesting a variation on the theme. The second round would involve second level characters.

He's legal. Charisma as a dump stat makes sense in this arena as we won't have any social encounters to speak of. He'll lose out on skills but acrobatics is likely to be the only really useful one. Big dumb half-orc.

EDIT: Whoops. That ugly thing is a 'she'.

Ah, got it.

Scarab Sages

Hi guys, Tarren's asked me to make a monk partner to Franz, so I'll have something up shortly.

Greetings, I am Ilil of the Leaping Monkey School. I shall be demonstrating the agility of the monkey.

"Illil be my partner from shool. We be going to bar, drinkin. Me like drinkin. And me like boys. But me not had good boyfriend. Me like to have good boyfriend!"

I will finish her up then! And thanks Jal to provide a partner!

Alright, so we have:

1. Mr Fweng's School of the Conniving Frog
-Drunk Monk
-Tallin

2.Leaping Monkey School
-Gunnom
-Ilil

3. Noisy Cricket School
-Misthing Gosmack
-Lil Jake

Let the best monk win!

Gunnom should be ready. Please point me to any errors that might have occured

"Gunnom thursy now! Need drink. And find boyfriend!"

One point of order to clarify: As this is a three way fight, I am assuming that flanking can be achieved so long as the person in the middle is surrounded by two opponents regardless of school or affiliation. That is, if a Cricket Fighter has a Monkey fighter on his left and a Frog Fighter on his right, he is flanked and both Monkey and Frog recieve the flanking bonus. Correct?

Sounds right. Btw, Jake, you have weapon finnesse, but it requires BAB +1. Monks have +0 to start.

A Drunk Monk wrote:

Two things. 1. They took out the BAB requirement for Weapon Finesse in the Beta version.

2. Two of the feats you have on your sheet aren't in Pathfinder Beta.

Yeah. Weapon Finesse has no prerequisite in the beta rules. Which is one reason I went with a high dexterity, low strength monk.
