Play-by-Post Discussion

Hey all-

If we don't here back from Kyrinn S. Eis (or someone else) in the next day or so, we could either just start with 4 characters or one of you could double up... although not necessary, I'm just thinking that a cleric or druid would be good (although one of the v3.5 healing classes like Favored Soul would work, too). I just wanted to throw that option out there for anyone who might be interested.

EDIT: Page 2! We made it! (but mostly just because I have oh-so-very-often responded to everyone's posts in multiple posts of my own. I'll try and start replying to multiple posts at once from now on, so that there isn't as much identical avatar image/Alias name sludge eating up the page five posts in a row).

Male Half Orc Barbarian 2

OK i have changed the rage to rage points.
By the way, thought you might like the dwarf. Its the sort of thing i like my players to come up with. Have fun with it!

Male Half Orc Barbarian 2

Monday? Cant wait to start this. I am realy into my character so im looking forward to see what you do with this campaign. Good Luck. Should be good.

Ah... thanks. I must have missed that. Good avatar change, by the way.

Thanks, just added background.

Hi. I see that you have another opening for a player. I would love to give it a try. I have played all versions of D&D over the years at some point or other. However, I have never done the play by post bit. I have a dwarven cleric of Torag (15 pt standard buy/pathfinder options) pretty much worked up. I just need to pick a feat and equipment. I could probably have it on line tomorrow morning. I do not have any of the background (basically unfamiliar with back-story/geography)and am pretty much open to suggestions.

If this works for your group let me know. If not...happy gaming, and I will look forward to reading the adventures on line.

It would be great for you to join with a dwarf cleric. If Kyrinn S. Eis joins... well, I guess that I can handle 6 characters.

I see you're pretty new to the boards (at least with that username). There's quite a bit of info above about a few house rules, along with stuff on how to create a character Alias and where to put your stat block.

Thanks!

Great!

Everyone: For those of you who haven't seen, Goburn now has an almost complete stat block. Goburn, as I said to Corvin, you should take a "+" signs out of your saves, since they're static. Thanks!

Male Half Orc Barbarian 2

Just added a bit on religion as well!

Good stuff!

By the way, I'll soon be posting a big update compiling all of my variants and with some other game information.

Male Half Orc Barbarian 2

Looking forward to it

OKAY! Now for a bit more information before we begin on ?Monday?

CHARACTER BACKGROUNDS

The backgrounds I’ve seen for Goburn, Skazz, and Liandra are great, as is Corvin’s vague idea of being an Acadamae graduate. There are just a few points: Remember, your character must end up in Korvosa for when the campaign begins (already done for Skazz, Corvin, and Liandra) and you must really hate goblins (which Skazz already has down, and Gobrun can be very easily developed similarly). If those of you who haven’t quite finished your backgrounds yet could relatively soon, that would be great (I’d like them sometime Saturday at the latest, if that’s at all possible).

VARIANT RULES

Most of these variants that I’m using have been covered above, but here they are all together for ease of reference. You may wish to refresh your memory on them all before we start. If you have any problems with any of the variants, be sure to let me know so that I can try and figure out a better way to do it.

Visible Monster Defenses: At the beginning of each round of combat, I will supply (in spoilers) the AC, saves, hp, and other defenses that each monster has. You can check these to see if you hit and, if so, how much damage you deal. You can determine when a monster dies, because the hit points are visible.

My only request with this is that you try not to metagame. Some things are obvious and every character knows (fire elementals are immune to fire). Other things are more obscure (what energy types is a yugoloth resistant to, anyway?) and aren’t necessarily known to all characters. If you think your character would have the knowledge, that’s fine. If it seems like something she wouldn’t know, try to play like you didn’t know it. I know that that’s hard, so I won’t blame you for metagaming due to this. It’s just going to happen.

Static Saves and Attacks vs. Saves: For speed of play, all characters and monster have static saving throw numbers equal to their normal save modifier +10. These save numbers function just like AC, except for determining how to get the number.

When a spell or ability would allow a saving throw to be made, the user of the spell or ability instead makes an attack roll of 1d20 + the normal ability’s save DC-10. So if a spell would normally be DC 15, it is a +5 bonus on the attack roll. If the spell or ability has multiple targets, roll separately for each target. Critical hits can never be scored on these attacks made against save numbers, although a natural 20 is an automatic hit and a natural 1 is an automatic miss.

In all, I belive that this system will function the same way as the standard system, just with a change as to who is rolling the dice. This is done so that if someone, say, casts fireball they don’t have to wait for me to determine whether or not they hit.

Level Bumps: Instead of using XP, we’ll use “level bumps.” At appropriate times, I’ll let you all know when to level up. This will typically be after about 5 encounters (less than is typical in a game, so that the campaign proceeds faster). If you ever think that it’s been to long since the last level bump, please be sure to let me know.

Wish Lists: I’d like you all to create magic item “wish lists” for your characters, at 1st level and whenever you level up. These lists should be about 3-5 magic items in a reasonable price range for a character of your level to get, and can be from the Beta or its web enhancement, or the v3.5 Magic Item Compendium (most items in there are allowed, but not all). I’ll try and place at least 1 item from each character’s wish list into the adventure for that level.

Other Treasure: It’s really up to you, but I’ll be supplying enough treasure that, once any wish list items are accounted for, will put each character’s wealth at the appropriate amount for the level. For example, if Skazz gets a 600 gp magic item for 1st level, he should then get about 400 gp in other items by the time that he reaches level 2, so that he has the assumed 1,000 gp. This division is really up to you guys however, it’s just my goal.

Start Playing!

It will soon be time for us to begin and for all of you to receive a strange and mysterious note… are you ready to become a hero and defeat the almighty…

Spoiler:
What? I’m not going to give away who the Big Bad Evil Guy is already!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask away!

Male Half Orc Barbarian 2

OK, Heres Skazz's wish list:-

Spoiler:

+1 Hide Armour
Amulet of Natural Armour
Bracer of Armour
Items that boosts physical ability

Hope these are ok?

Female Half-Elf Rogue 3/ Urban Ranger 2

Liandra's first wishlist

Spoiler:

Weapons of Masterwork quality.
Later plus one and keen.
Stealth enhancing items

Added description. She's spent her whole life in the city so at a blank for the goblin hating other than racism.

Thanks for the lists!

Liandra: There are goblins living in certain areas of Korvosa. I can come up with some background for you soon, if you can't figure one out.

Something that I forgot to mention in my mega-post above:

THE THREE THREADS

There will be three threads for this campaign: the Adventure thread, the Discussion thread, and the Playtest thread. Although the first two are pretty basic (and are listed here only for the sake of completion and for anyone, who is fairly new to the forums and how PbP works), the third requires additional explanation. Anyone experienced with PbP games can just skip to the third.

Adventure Thread: The Adventure thread will be in the Play-By-Post forums. This is where we’ll actually play the game. In the Adventure thread, please use the BBCode for Out-Of-Character text, when necessary. Once created (probably on Sunday), the Adventure thread will be called “RotR/CotCT Hybrid Campaign Adventure” I’ll provide a link to it somewhere in here.

Discussion Thread: This is the Discussion thread, where long out-of-character talk should be placed and where you should level up characters, place magic item wish lists, and just talk with other players.

Playtest Thread: The Playtest thread will be located in the Pathfinder RPG Playtest Reports forum. My goal with this is to have all of us discuss experiences with the rules in an easily accessible and visible location, so that everybody can look at (and at to) it. These discussions will hopefully include experiences that you thought were good and/or bad, things that you think need to be changed in the Beta, your opinions on issues such as backwards compatibility (including rules elements like the Ultimate Magus), etc. I hope that this feedback will be able to allow for Jason and everyone else working on the Beta to see another real playtest in progress. You don’t need to post in the Playtest thread, but I certainly hope you do. Once created (most likely within the next week or two), the Playtest thread will be called “RotR/CotCT Hybrid Campaign Playtest” I’ll provide a link to it in this thread.

Also, at the beginning of both the Adventure and Playtest threads, I’ll include quick links to the other two, for ease of navigation. Once created, I’ll also add links to all three threads to my profile page, so you can get around quickly. I've already added a link to this thread.

EDIT: I'll soon also add links to each player's profile page to my page.

Male Human Wizard 1

Sounds like a plan.

I think I shall enjoy this game quite a bit.

Fortunately, I figured out why Corvin dislikes Goblins as much as he does:
Whilst on an Acadamae-sponsored field trip with some classmates (including a girlfriend), they were attacked by a small part of Goblins.

Corvin's girlfriend got killed, and Corvin ended up with a ragged scar on the right side of his jaw, along with missing a small part of his right earlobe (basically, he narrowly missed swallowing an arrow, and came away scarred in more ways than one.

How's that?

EDIT: I'll have the full write up (along with description and all gear) done tonight after I get home from work.

I've added links to my profile page for this thread and to the profile pages for each character. If you want, you can use those links for easier navigation to see various character stats and to move from one thread to another while playing. I'll add in Preston's character link once he's put it up, and links to the Adventure and Playtest threads will be added once those threads are created.

Another two things that I forgot to mention in my mega-post:

CONTINUITY WITH PAIZO PRODUCTS

Some of you might notice some discontinuity between this campaign and the standard Pathfinder Chronicles world. Think of this campaign as being set in an “alternate-reality” version of Golarion. While this sort of discontinuity is going to happen in any campaign, this one might have a little more than others, for three reasons:

1) This is a hybrid campaign. To be able to smoothly blend both adventure paths into a single but cohesive story, some changes have to be made. Some areas from around Magnimar and Sandpoint are being shuffled around so they are located closer to or in Korvosa. Some places in Korvosa are radically different than those present in the Pathfinder Chronicles Guide to Korvosa. The overarching storyline is designed to weave together the Big Bad Evil Guys of both adventure paths in such a way that they fit together. Because of these points, you should not consider this campaign to be taking place in the same world as Paizo assumes.

2) I’m pulling from my collection. I have quite a few v3.5 books, and I’ll be using them to help run this campaign. Although I’m not positive of the exact details, you might see things like mind flayers, beholders, planar dragons, warforged, etc. in this campaign, along with spells not in the SRD, and some subsybstems like invocations (note that I’m not saying that there will be mind flayers, beholders, and so on, just that they do exist in the world and so some might show up in the campaign).

3) I don’t own all the books. I have only 4 modules. I don’t have anything for Second Darkness. I don’t have the hardcover campaign setting. Although I will try to keep this world as true to Paizo’s as possible (with the exceptions stipulated in #1 and #2), I may have some things wrong because I haven’t quite maxed out skill ranks in Knowledge (Golarion).

CHARACTERS
It's great to see all of your characters almost done. I'm just going to point out what still needs to be added to each, so that you don't forget the little details.

CORVIN
-Hit points. Corvin should have 13 hit points (Beta wizards do have a D6 Hit Die, right? I don't have the book in front of me).
-Background, Personality, and Description all need to be filled in. You have a little bit of background already, but it would be great if it was all in one place.
-Wish list. Please add in your magic item wish list at the bottom of the profile page.

SKAZZ
-Wish list. I'd rather have your magic item wish list on your profile page than in-thread, so could you just copy that over?

LIANDRA
-Wish list. I'd rather have your magic item wish list on your profile page than in-thread, so could you just copy that over?

GOBURN
-Equipment and attacks need to be added in, and AC may need to be redetermined based on armor chosen.
-The + signs in front of the save numbers should be removed.
-Background, Personality, and Description all need to be filled in. You already have your background, so that's just a copy-and-paste.
-Wish list. Please add in your magic item wish list at the bottom of the profile page.

PRESTON'S CHARACTER
-Assuming that you're still interested, your entire character needs to be posted and named, and an Alias needs creation. You can come up with background, etc. if you want, or I could craft something for you.

I'm just trying to keep everything on track for the Monday launch.

Male Dwarf Ranger/ 2

Hi,

So I'm almost all set. I just need to complete last few things, such as Languages, etc.

Female Dwarf Cleric of Torag

Hi everyone,

Yep, still very interested. I have posted what I have thus far. I have a list of equipment I need to include but I do have a few questions...

How do you enter the bloody spoiler/bbc code. I tried a bunch of variations and it just did not work....I seem to be showing noobie ignorance right off the bat...

Hitpoints: how are people calculating? I am guessing max hp+con bonus?

Feats: 2 to start or just one? I would like to use Earth Sense (general) from Races of Stone (pg. 138). "You are in tune with the earth beneath you. Prereq. con 13 and wis 13 as long as you are touching the ground, you can take a move action to sense the number of creatures within 20 feet that are also touching the ground and the direction of each one. You cannot pinpoint the location of any creature with this feat."

Background is really generic. I do not know a lot of details about the setting...yet. Please feel free to tweak as needed

Wish list: Even though Algret is not a front line fighter type her eyes light up when ever she thinks of donning her gauntlets of ogre power and wielding a dwarven thrower or a hammer of thunderbolts in battle against the enemies of Torag. In the meant time, almost anything better than what she has would do. Money for extra healer kits, A masterwork warhammer emblazoned with the holy symbol of Torag, a coat of fine dwarven chain, a couple of healing potions, a potion of bulls strength; She is a simple girl at heart ;-)

Male Half Orc Barbarian 2

Wish list added to profile as requested.

This is how it works: ["spoiler"]This is a spoiler.["/spoiler"] <-- You type that (minus the "" marks).

Spoiler:
And you get this!

Male Half Orc Barbarian 2

Heres a question. Should any of us know each other before we begin or are we all strangers?

Female Dwarf Cleric of Torag

My Dear Corvin: thankyouthankyourhankyou. I am sure the blessings of Torag will soon be upon you, and the strength of the earth will be yours when you need it.

Seriously, vastly embarrassed that it was that easy. I guess Algret is not the only one a few embers short of a full forge...I chalk it up to having a really long and intense week

Hey, sorry I didn't post earlier about some of these things, but the Paizo site seemed to be down.

Skazzgrakk wrote:

Although I was planning on having everybody be strangers, you can know other characters off the bat if you want. If you do, though, try not to overshadow other characters by having certain characters already familiar with each other.

Algret Durthane wrote:

Hey, it's all fun. I once played an aasimar cleric of Pelor (may his name be blessed), who annoyed my other group members to no end, for the light of the Sun God shone not upon them as it did I.

Algret Durthane wrote:

For hit points, we are using double max hp + Con score, one of the options suggested in the Beta. As for feats, it is the normal 1 at 1st level and then +1 feat at every odd level... As soon as you want though, you can take Earth Sense; I don't think that it looks really overpowered.

Algret Durthane wrote:

I'll create a more in-depth background for you, and I'll post it in this thread. If there's anything in it that you don't like then, feel free to change it.

EVERYONE: I've added a link to Algret's profile to my profile.

EDIT: Algret, two other points. First, what is the number that you have listed after "Melee" and "Ranged," the 1 and 0? Also, your saves should be 14/10/15, not 3/0/5. Other than that, your stats look good (except for the notes about hit points and feats, above).

I'm creating an NPC for this campaign, and I have a question that I can't find anywhere in the rules. I was wondering if one of you could point me in the right direction.

I am creating a domain-using character, who has some spell-like abilities granted from his/her domain that allows a saving throw. The spell-like ability is not normally on the cleric spell list, so it has no cleric spell level. How do I determine the save DC/attack? Is it based on the highest level that the spell could be for any class? The lowest? The average? Is it automatically set at 0?

If any of you have seen anything about this, it would be great if you could let me know. I seem to recall something in the v3.5 MM talking about this, but I can't quite remember/find it (and the rule was obscure enough that it could probably be changed for PRPG without any trouble).

Thanks!

I have a few more questions/comments about each of your characters. I think that once these things are all finished up, we'll be ready for a Monday launch. Please don't take these points as nitpicking... I just want to have everything accurate so that the Playtest runs smoothly... you never know what kind of difference 1 hp could make.

ALGRET

-I think that you should have 18 hp, not 17.

-You might just not have gotten around to it yet, but I wanted to remind you that your feat selection still isn't quite finalized.

-Your Personality/Background spoilers still aren't working quite right. See Corvin's post above for how to fix it.

-Did you take your +1 hp or skill rank from your favored class into account?

SKAZZ

-I think that you should have 26 hp, not 25... it looks like either your Con mod or you favored class bonus is missing from your calculations. Your rage hp should also be increased by 1.

-Your skill modifiers seem a little low. Did you remember to add in the +3 bonus to class skills that you are trained in?

LIANDRA

-Did you add in your favored class bonus, either +1 hp or +1 skill rank? I can't tell just looking at your character. If it was for hp, your hit points should be 18, not 17. If it was a skill, could you add in that that was your choice?

CORVIN

-You don't have anything listed for hit points. Looking at your character, I think that 13 would be the right amount (or 14 if you put your favored class bonus into hp).

-On a related note, did you account for your favored class bonus when determining skill ranks? Or are you using it for hp?

-It looks like you still need to add background/personality/description to your profile.

GOBURN

-You still have + signs in front of your save numbers.

-Although it looks like you've gotten equipment, you haven't added in your attack bonus and damage.

-You don't have a favored enemy yet. Might I recommend goblins or giants?

-How did you manage to afford a masterwork weapon at 1st level??

Female Dwarf Cleric of Torag

Hello and happy Saturday.

Background is fixed..it was an overlooked typo.

HP and skills: I took the +1 bonus on the skill actually, other wise I only have two skill ranks. I took one rank in craft(stone mason is her family trade but wanting to try weapon-smithing soon) heal and sense motive. I listed appraise because of the racial +2. I actually am assuming that Liandra will be doing most of that if she is willing.

HP: I took 8+8+1. They way it reads, I did not think you doubled the con bonus just the d8...more than happy to change that mind you.

Feats: vacillating back and forth. Earth sense seems faith based, improved initiative-helpful for combat but I am leaning towards toughness. Extra hp means to live to adventure another day

Male Half Orc Barbarian 2

Hi. Yes I forgot the class bonus to HP. Will look at the skills.

Male Half Orc Barbarian 2

By the way Iziak,I dont know if this is what you are looking for but try page 300 of the 3.5 MM:- Calculating Saving Throw DCs. It states the formula for save DCs is:10+1/2 the creatures HD+relevant ability score modifier. Hope this is what you were after?

Male Half Orc Barbarian 2

I'd be interested to know where in the world everyone is posting from? I'm in England and as usual it's windy and wet at the moment!

I added the point to skills this time around.

Edit
Actually, forgot to. Added climb.

Ahh, we share a common bond then my half elven friend!

Female Dwarf Cleric of Torag

I'm in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is partly cloudy, breezy, 72 degrees and dry. It is a phenomenal day.

I'm near Philly, and boy has Hurricane Hannah been causing some trouble with my internet connection. I'm sorry if I can't post a lot for the next one or two days... it all depends on the weather.

Male Dwarf Ranger/ 2

I'm in Pennsylvania as well. I haven't gotten as much rain as Iziak though.

I think there are a few things left for me to fix (like encubrance), but otherwise I think I'm done!

Male Half Orc Barbarian 2

Finished encumberance as well.

Female Half-Elf Rogue 3/ Urban Ranger 2

Just made a few last minute changes, switched Strength with Con, adjustard HP,Fort save, Damage, Capacity and Climb skill bonus, got rid of bedroll to reflect the city underworld life, and added wealth counter.

OKAY... Hannah's passed, so I'll do my best to catch up on everything that's happened.

You have a Con score of 14... a +2 bonus, not +1. 8+8+2=18.

Feats: I'd go with Earth Sense if I were you... it looks pretty good. If you take it, could you post the full text in your profile so that everyone can see it?

Just so you know, Algret is a dwarf, not a human. The avatar is a human because, presumably, there is no female dwarf avatar (of course there's no female dwarf avatar [mumbles about the one good thematic change in 4th edition]).

Skazz wrote:

I think that the new background is interesting. I'm not sure how well it will play in the campaign, though. How much of a part of your characters life is it? How much will it take over your roleplaying? And yes... the Chronicles books are fantastic (must... have... hardcover...).

Female Dwarf Cleric of Torag

Ok, the HP snafu was embarrasing. Have I mentioned the last two weeks have been incredibly stressful....One of the reasons I am looking to play. I DM an Arcana Unearthed game and DMing does not re-charge me as much as playing does.

I took the Earth sense feat and wrote out the description per the races of stone book (pg 138)...I think I am actually ready to go!

Also you are correct on the avatar. I could not find an image that radiated female dwarf (cleric)so I went with what seemed a close second.

Looking forward to the start of the adventure.

With the HP, it happens to everyone. I can't think of anyone who hasn't made a mistake like that. I'm sorry to hear about the stress... I'm pretty busy from July-November myself, and can't get a local group together.

Thanks for getting the Earth Sense description in. I'm about done working on the First Post for the Adventure thread... we'll be starting soon!
