How about 2mbs & 2ns?

Seriously - a year ago the Pathfinder name was "enh" - now I'd never give it up.

4ges & 4mians?

5tions and 5taurs? ok, so you have to use the french word "cinq" for five, and it's kinda forced and i don't know what sanctions would have to do with gaming, but i don't see any better suggestions for "5"!

I agree; using the name Pathfinder for everything is overkill, IMO.

My suggestion: Paths & Perils

I like Paths & Perils. Damned good. Sounds great!

Mikeftrevino wrote:

Ya all forgot another pathfinder. sheesh! Which is a pretty cool one by the way.

I rather like Pathfinder as a name. Even if the name was "Poop in a bucket," that does not change what a decent product it is. At least the name invokes a good and perhaps adventurous image. If it is a great product it may even become synonymous with gaming. I mean, look at Kleenex. That's a pretty dumb sounding and looking name, yet most people refer to tissue paper as kleenex.
I suggest a nice big dose of "get over it."
What would you have it be, "darth_borehd's big adventure?"

Edit: I apologize for those last lines.I'm in a pissy mood.

Noted. Pre-fanboys would buy it even if it was called "Poop in a bucket"...so what's the hassle with changing the name again?

Except it reminds me and a lot of other old gamers of the Powers & Perils RPG that came out in the '80's.

Blazing a trail is pro-active.

Let the new round of rip-it-to-shreds begin.

To find is active voice.

To be found is passive voice.
To blaze is active voice.
To be blazed is passive voice.

Pro-active has nothing to do with the voice of a verb.

How is the word "Pathfinder" passive voice?

I think what Kyrinn means is that "finding a path" seems more passive than "blazing a trail." However they ultimately mean the same thing, so it's of relative little concern.

Of greater concern is that Wulf Ratbane has already published OGL 3.5 material under the name "Trailblazer RPG," which means that Paizo would basically be stepping on a legal landmine if they adopted the name.

I am 100% behind the name Pathfinder. I think it is properly evocative, distinctive, and easy to put on a t-shirt. I'd find it bland if the game was named "Fantasy Something" and I'd find it dumb if it was "Alliteration & Alligators".

Well, there you go. A bit of RPG trivia that escaped me. Kudos. So are we back to Pathfinder, or do the gurus here have a better suggestion? :D

Are you set on 'learnin' me about this point, teach? I thought the point of the exercise was to find a new name for the RPG in question. :D

Well I highly doubt they're gonna change it regardless of what we say, so i think all the suggestions thus far have been in the nature of fun, where the majority of them aren't to be taken seriously. if you want to try your hand, we were doing it with numbers replacing syllables and I managed to do one for "5". see if you can do "6". It'd be awesome if we could get all the way to "10". maybe then Veector would deign it to have its own thread.

Three pages and still no one has suggested Papers and Paychecks? I would just like to voice my disappointment at that.

As an aside, why all the hate for the Pathfinder movie? I enjoy it for the brutality - yes, the same sort of brutality found in the epic barbarian movies that Erik Mona insists are an outdated relic of the '80s ;-) (a sentiment that I disagree with because I happen to enjoy those outdated barbarian movies from the '80s).

I remember when 3.5 was released, Monte Cook wrote a review where he said that some of the changes made were larger than what you would typically expect from a revision and fell more in line with the types of changes that you would expect to see with a new edition. Now, the Pathfinder RPG certainly builds upon the 3.5 rule set, but I feel that the same reasoning Monte applied (which I happen to agree with) suggests that this is not a partial edition change. If you consider the unbroken path that is 1E --> 2E--> 3E -- 3.5 --> Pathfinder, then Pathfinder is a new edition of the game. Because the changes are many and dramatic, I feel that it qualifies as a new edition; it just happens to be one that maintains backwards compatibility, much like there is between 2E and 1E.

Easy.

But seriously, I quite like the Pathfinder name. I think it suits the whole product line well.

'Scept of course we can't. given that D+D is an owned trademark. And also it would be pretentious to assume that Paizo had the sole corner on 3.5 successors, there's at least two other major contenders if I'm not mistaken. True20 being one that comes to mind.

Then again we could always subtitle it as the

The RolePlaying Game For Grognards and Luddites Who Won't Switch to 4th Edition and the Digital Experience.

That's funny, since Pathfinder is a sequel to 3rd edition and provides a digital experience through its online forums for playtest feedback. So people playing Pathfinder are switching to a 4th edition and a digital experience.

although, for it to qualify it would have to be Sex and Satyrs. but yes, i think it wins.

Glad I win, especially since that wasn't in refrence to naming it was responding to the gentleman who called himself a Satyrist.

Anywho it's better to be called sex with satyrs then sex and satyrs.

Is it a 4th? or perhaps because WOTC put out it's 4th, then maybe it's a 5th? or a 3.75 or 3.76 because True20 was out already?

Or maybe we should not worry at all and think of this as Pathfinder First Edition. :)

I have to confess, I don't care much for the name Pathfinder for the game system either. While I can see the conotations with the adventure serieses, it doesn't evoke any sort of mood about the game itself or even accurately describe what it's about.

If it were mine, though, I'd have called it something involving "Legacy" or somesuch.

I also believe it's too late for them to consider changing it so I'm not putting a whole lot of worry behind it.

Hey, I left myself nice and vague, but if *you* want to rant, why then, be my guest!

Silver Crusade

I like Pathfinder because in a way it paves the way for a new grounds & such, epically when it first came out. Now with the rules & all the campaign books out, it really works.

Paths & Phasms

It has the Path, the '&' , the matching monster and even the cool ring to it!!!!! :) Perfect!! :P

OSRIC, Castles & Crusades (Gary's last bit with Castle Zagyg), True20, and several others also strive to stay afloat in the Sea of Anachronism. They have some great ideas. Paizo is already selling 4E stuff on this very site, in any event. They will also cheerfully sell this new retro 3.5 system to PATHFINDER fans and those who can be freed from the PATH of 4E that we'll FIND on the major bookstore shelves for years to come.

Wait, never mind - I've GOT it; the new name should be:

Spoiler:
PI FINDER

This allows an infinite number of revisions without ever needing new editions! 3.1 -> 3.14 -> 3.141 -> 3.141592653589793238 etc. Joy of Pi

Had enough yet? I've downloaded it all and bought the Beta 2 Playtest hard copy already. See you in the design forum!
