Pronunciation Guide?

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

With a whole new world coming at us this last year I have nearly missed the chance to prevent variations in all the world's names. Is there an official Pronunciation Guide anywhere? Had hoped for it in the Campaign Setting but it was so full of good stuff there wasn't room. I need to nip all of the variations in the bud now... before the Drow show up in Second Darkness and remind everyone of the subject...

It is in the Campaign Setting. At the back, in the Appendices. Hope that helps! (Though you'll find that they are intentionally ambiguous on the pronunciation of Drow. Guess some controversies aren't worth putting to bed.)

You'd think I'd have noticed skipping from Appendix A to D.... guess I was too excited to look twice... *sigh*

Yeah, saw this wasn't there either. I am not overly worried, its not going to be nearly as difficult as getting my players not to laugh at a god of thieves and murder named Norgorber.

The pronunciation guide says DROW.

Second Darkness says it rhymes with bow . . . which can be pronounced two ways.

Oh, so we say drow that way, no?

I always pronounced it drow rhyming with ow! Just sounds more sinister to me than the other variations. Then again I call jam, jam not jelly so I'll probably never follow the trend of a game born in the US! :p

Listen to this podcast (mp3 file) and you'll hear how they pronounce Golarion.

There's nothing ambiguous about how we list drow. The pronunciation guide follows a very strict method of expressing sounds. It lists drow as DROW, which in the way the pronunciation guide lists sounds, would make it rhyme with cow, how, ow, pow, or now. If it were pronounced the other way (which is incorrect, btw), it would be listed as DROH, to rhyme with oh, no, go, or low. But it doesn't list drow as DROH because that is incorrect. It lists drow as DROW, because that is the industry-accepted pronunciation.

If it's hard to keep it straight, just remember this simple rhyme: How now black drow?

I say it like Dr-ow as in "ow! I just got hit with a sleep-poised crossbow bolt!"

I'm fairly sure that subtitle was written with tongue firmly in cheek (or is that fingers firmly crossed?).

I got a good chuckle out of it, anyway.

I know I for one would like to see a pronunciation guide placed in every adventure or updated online with every adventure.

:)

Not like you guys don't already have enough to do right???
