No! I was responding to Brent, but forgot to quote him. Sorry for the confusion. I have enough time to respond on the compy, just not the time to actually sit and have tabletop right now.

Hmmm. Both Quandry and Fax have nibbled around the edges of the "appearing children" phenomenon. I suppose I should explain a little more.

For those of you who are writing up PC's who are native to Carrion Hill

Spoiler:
Neighbors and extended family members notice the appearance of the new children, but the parents never do. (In this, Fax's write-up of Urskine provides the solitary exception.) As far as the family is concerned, one day they have 1 child, and the next day they have 2. They possess memories and selective records of having had both children.

(If you remember Dawn's origin in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, that would be similar.)

The new children are typically ruddier and softer-featured than the rest of their family, and boys don't tend to grow much facial hair when they reach puberty. Invariably, those children leave town when they leave home, and their parents seldom hear from them again.

Nobody makes much of a fuss, because it tends to upset the parents. And the superstitious swear that accidents follow those who ask too many pointed questions.

It sometimes happens that a niece or young cousin will come for an extended stay with a family, and the neighbors will be quick to refer to the visitor's hosts as her 'parents' to avoid giving offense.

(And, Fax, your instincts about Urskine are spot on in two respects: he and his wife are the only family that have in recent times had more than one of these fosterlings, and your entry hints at the reason for that.)

Chris: So far, I don't think Beta is doing anything like that with the multi-class caster level thing, but if you want to house-rule something, that's great.

Spoiler:
In the Campaign Setting, there's a Feat for "Hermean Blood"... Unless you're giving out free 1st level background Feats (& only +1 to a few skills isn't that big a Feat), I'd rather skip this one and take another Feat (like Monkey Grip), although my character IS of Hermean (& Draconic) descent...?
Anyhow, I'll write up a more specific background if it turns out I'm in the game.

About the traits, are these the ones from the SRD? I think Jason said that he plans to add traits to Pathfinder, but I don't see them in the Beta... (they might be there, I haven't really read the whole thing over again)
From the SRD, I liked the Saddleborne trait (though the penalty to Handle Animal seems like it shouldn't apply to Horses) but then I realized there's NO WAY I can afford a horse if I want a MW spear, even Crafting it myself - Would you be OK if I take Handle Animal, to say that I had tamed a wild one (it'd be great to find the stats for a "Mountain Horse")? Otherwise, I can say my character DID have a horse, but it was stolen by bandits, and he hopes to recover it.

I was also wondering (this is something I'm going to mention when Beta's Skill Feedback starts), RE: Craft(Weaponry) and Craft(Bows&Arrows), wouldn't it make more sense for Spears to fit into Craft(Bows&Arrows)? Spears are like large Arrows, after all, and it seems more flavorful if I could make Bows & Arrows and Spears but NOT 'civilized' weapons like Swords, which is what Weaponry covers. Thoughts? I'd save a skill this way, but I'd also lose the ability to Craft non-Spear melee weapons.

Hey Chris! Sounds like fun! When is the deadline to apply for this PBP?

Greetings! I am stopping by as promised by my partner-in-crime and other half Cacophonik.

I am an experienced Role-Player, mostly with D&D, although it has been more than five years since my last play-by-post. I am not currently involved in any games, and anticipate I will be able to post regularly.

Currently, I am most interested in playing a Half-Elven Paladin of Iomedae, recently departed from Vigil.

I will post my NPC tomorrow. Thanks for the consideration! :)

Liberty's Edge

I just realized that my last post can also be misconstrued. I am definitely available for the PbP. I can make time for the posting each day, in my homework schedule. I just don't have the time to dip away for 4 to 6 hours for face to face tabletop games. Sorry, for confusion I may have caused, or am causing now.

Also, are the traits the ones in the SRD, as Quandary asked, or are they the ones from the Second Darkness companion?

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2015 Top 16

Chris, I was seeing alot of experts, so I thought I would go in a little different direction.

Winston Wygate, Deputy Constable
(Human, Warrior 2, LG)

Winston, or “Win” to his friends, is generally good natured and friendly to most folks. About the only way to get on his bad side is to be engaged in illegal or immoral activities or somehow threaten the safety of his town. He takes his job seriously and will put his life on the line to safeguard the people of Carrion Hill. He views his job with the constable’s office as half town protector and half goodwill ambassador and the citizens on his daily beat truly admire him for it. If Win were to find himself threatened, it is likely the locals would try to aid him as much as reasonably possible. The one frustration Win has with his job is that several times when he has been looking into the disapperance of strangers, is that he has been told by his superiors to spend his time on more important matters.

Oh, by noon (Pacific Daylight-Savings Time) today, Trent. If you're interested, promise that you'll be able to keep up once a day or so, toss out an NPC from the Ustalav city of Carrion Hill, and let me know whether you think you'll be at Paizo-Con II.

Also wondering re: Traits, except I feel even more lost than those who piped up earlier, as I have no idea where they are finding the SRD they mention. I have the Second Darkness player's companion, so I can nab traits from there if necessary, but was curious as to their other source.

(The SRD includes "traits", personality quirks that make a character better at some things and worse at others. That wasn't quite what I'd meant.)

I had seen the "Second Darkness" Player's Guide when I encouraged people to take traits, and was expecting a more complete set of "Pathfinder Traits" in the Beta release. As it turns out, no so much there.

Does anybody know if a robust list of Pathfinder traits has been published yet, or is due out soon?

If not, then augment your starting character with any two of the following:

  • a SRD trait
  • a trait from the "Second Darkness" Player's Guide
  • a +1 to a saving throw.

Carrion Hill NPC, as requested:

Jolem "Lem" Sandeen
Human Fighter 2/ Expert 2 (Skill Focus: Cooking)

Lem Sandeen is a tall, well rounded human man who appears to be in his early 40's. If you look closely at him (and in the right light), you can see the vague silhouette of a warrior's build beneath several years of accumulated taste-testing bulk. In the five years he has been the owner-operator of the Cold Comfort Inn, his patrons have come to appreciate both his deft hand with spices as well as his ready ear. Customers often claim that his steady, black gaze beneath the now grey-shot red brows seems to invite others' confidences while simultaneously hiding Lem&'s own mysterious past.

Jolem is a retired warrior who lost his adventuring partner and wife, Lloraine, nearly six years ago while the two were seeking fortune amongst the Hungry Mountains. The broken ashwood staff that hangs over the door of the Cold Comfort and a silver band suspended on a chain around his neck are the sole visible reminders he has of his lost love.

Changes made, ready for approval, or disapproval.

Let it begin!

Preliminary stats for Grumble are in his profile - will stick pretty close to these, I think. First shot at PFRPG character, so please feel free to point out any oopsies and I will get them fixed ASAP! ;)

Will try to get Valdisara (my wife's character) statted out tonight or tomorrow morning as well.

I hope to have my sheet done by tomorrow morning. Our A/C was out from Sunday to Friday, then again from Saturday night to yesterday noon. My parents chose the wrong time to fly down to Texas for a visit... Anyway, with all the running around, I haven't been able to polish Martaug up fully, but I expect to finish tonight.

No rush. Again, Gavgoyle, I'm hoping to start around the beginning of the month.

Scarab Sages

Woot very happy to be able to play, I intend to play an Osirion Conjurer, I will roll up the character ASAP, I will be away for the better part of tomorrow as I leave for vacation but should be available consistently after that.

Thanks

Cool beans,
I worked up a pretty good Character Sheet for Yalka...
Whenever you want to, Chris, look it over and tell me if anything looks off. I'll work up a bit more background/flavor and post that in the Discussion thread when it's ready...
(I realized I can't afford even crafting a MW Melee weapon OR a Horse, so forget about that post.
In her skills, I figured that Spears are covered by Craft(Bows&Arrows), just tell me if it's otherwise...)

Fax, sounds cool that you're going for the Harrower class...
(and I beleive if your Harrow deck is a Bonded Item, it's free!)

BTW: I noticed this bug on the forums, if you want the "Languages" field to show up in the Profile page, you need to fill something in for the "Homepage URL"....

Oh, c'mon! You know I'm going to Paizo-Con II! LOL. Well, looks like I missed the deadline, but that's okay as everything in my life seems to be happening RIGHT NOW. It's probably not the best time for me to get involved in a PBP. I will, however, enjoy following along. :)

Yep, it is. But it's not Zosimus' bonded item, that's the amulet of Desna he wears. I liked taking ranks in Craft(Harrow deck) and am going to work toward a masterwork deck. :)

Ahhh, a believer in good old-fashioned hard work... :-)

According to Beta, pg 49, "Objects that are the subject of an arcane bond must fall into one of the following categories: amulet, staff, ring, wand, or weapon." So, the Harrow Deck wouldn't have been a valid bonded item.

(And, please let me know if you think I'm reading the rules wrong. We're all learning Pathfinder together.)

Nope, you've got it exactly right and that's why it's the amulet of Desna, mechanically speaking. Zosimus is quite focused on his deck in other ways, though; thus the Fortune Teller feat with the Harrow deck as the focus there.

Scarab Sages

Fadthen Pir
LN ghost gnome rogue:5

In life Fadthen made a deal with a merchant. Life was good. Years went by and Fadthen was betrayed by fellow 'expeditor'.
In death he met a merchant and things were not so good.
He hadn't read the fine print of that contract. Now the 'merchant' has given him the duty of watching over Carrion Hill. He doesn't know why and he isn't happy about it but he never goes back on a deal.
His duty has lasted a year. He expects another visit from the merchant next month on the full moon where he will have another report of things going along normally in a town such as this. As normal as any town can be with children that mysteriously appear and disappear as a common occurance.

Scarab Sages

Well... I missed out. Y'all have fun for me.
:D

Chris,

That's a big group -- you've certainly got your hands full. Good luck with it, and happy gaming!
Hopefully I'll catch you next time around.
