Pathfinder Society

The Exchange

My home game is currently is a PBEM campaign. In fact I have two on the go right now. The 4 hour modules for Pathfinder Society would probably work well for our campaign speed. Is there a way to do my PBEM game as a "home game".

No; they've said that only tabletop games can qualify for Pathfinder Society play in Year 0.

Of course, that doesn't stop you from downloading the scenarios and playing them anyways; it just won't "count".

I'm having trouble understanding why it would make a difference?

Scarab Sages

Joshua Frost was talking about them looking into it for Season 1, and implied there were "logistical concerns" to be addressed.

I just asked about what these concerns might be. (see thread about questions the society guide raised)

I too would like to understand the challenges involved for the Society as well.

I think they think it's easier to cheat (i.e. play a module that you've seen already) when you're not playing face-to-face. I don't see why it would be hugely different than cheating (e.g. playing with two different profiles) in a home game, though.

There are parts of the reporting sheet that need to be physically signed off by the DM, and other parts that need to be initialed by the DM. Since they don't have a way to do this online, and it is an important part of the reporting phase, they must come up with a different way to do this to allow for PFS games to be played online.

A fax machine would work, wouldn't it? Or, in case of emergency, good ol' snail mail?

I am sure that a Fax probably wouldn't cut it, but snail mail is a completely viable option. I too have questioned what the difference is. Really the question is quite moot, because you could PBEM or Online and Paizo would never know as long as you did all of the submissions of recorded information in the same way a "standard" face-to-face table-top game is run. At that point it would be completely transparent. Cheaters are going to get caught either way.

Actually, I have a wee bit of experience in this from LG. I've gotten both scanned ARs and actually did one by taking a digital photo of it. Both methods produce legible though not perfect ARs. But we'll see where the powers that be decide to go with this in the future.

Josh, if you happen upon this before GC, I'd be happy to discuss my experiences with you in Indy.

Even if it were to be outside the official Society framework, I'm sure there would be interest in test driving the new system. If anyone knows of a PBEM game being arranged I'd love to try it out. Who knows it could be used to prove that it could be done thereby validating PBEM games for the Society.
