Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Now that Pathfinder is in Beta, we need to discuss the creation of . . .

Besides, how long will it be before d20 modern gets totally redesigned?

  • Pathfinder Modern (Spy/Hidden Magic/Horror/etc)
  • Pathfinder Future (Space/Cyberpunk/Post-Apocolyptic/etc)
  • Pathfinder Supers
  • I am sure that we could come up with some others . . .

So, I am pleading! :) This is a vital market nitch that needs to be filled!

Green Ronin did their a revision of the d20 rules. They called it True20. IIRC, Paizo has said they are not interested in making a Modern/Scifi version of their system (and devaluing the logo like Wizards did with the d20 license). So the next biggest company to have a d20 variant is Green Ronin. So that's the modern/scifi d20-based system to be. The system is a general system like d20 and designed to handle anything.

Green Ronin's Mutants and Masterminds has been around for a while and its available for publishers to do stuff with a free license and its similar to True20. Its a Supers variant of d20.

Crafty games, on top of doing their own version of a fantasy d20 game, FantasyCraft, will be doing a sci fi setting using their game as a basis, or rather, the modified version of the core rules, MasterCraft. I think Paizo wants to focus on pulp fantasy right now, but d20 sci fi is still out there.

Paizo has made it pretty clear that one of the overarching reasons for PRPG is to have a game system in-print to support Pathfinder. I don't see Pathfinder Modern ever happening... in any event it wouldn't be under the Pathfinder brand.

You can certainly take the rules changes that apply to modern and port them.

True20 is a little too free form and a bit too far from d20 Modern for my taste. I have been looking into Modern20 as a possible replacement. Haven't pulled the trigger and paid the $10 for the PDF yet, but may next month when my games budget can handle it. Curse you Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting.

After buying and reading through True20, I mostly felt like I ate a heaping bowl of bran flakes: lots of systemy ruffage, but too bland to be enjoyable. The system was built super-flexible, to the point of having no real flavor or strong leaning, and left me completely disinterested. It's a shame, too, because I love most of GRs work and am an A+ fangirl for Mutants and Masterminds (well... maybe B+; I didn't really like the Annual #2).

I'd actually recommend Mutants and Masterminds for a universal modern system over True20. Very flexible, point-based character system. Built-in power balance. The super-powers chapter can be used to simulate anything from high technology to psychic powers to magic spells to fancy kung fu moves. And a very simple, fast mechanic based off the D20 system, which you're obviously already familiar with. I've actually played in a great noir detective game using the M&M rules.

It is a shame we'll never see a Pathfinder in space, though. If anyone could do sci-fi high adventure right, I'm betting it's Paizo.

My thought exactly! :D

Might I introduce you to Dark Horizons and Reign of Discordia?

Where can I find more on this "Reign of Discordia" it seems to be exactly what I was looking for. :D

Cold Black was looking to be too dark & Gritty for my personal tastes.

Listen to Episode 2 of Atomic Array here for an interview (and subscribe to the podcast via iTunes!). The author, Darrin Drader, frequents these boards as well.

You called?

Yes, Reign of Discordia is my space opera setting built exclusively for the True20 rules.

My preference is Pathfinder for my fantasy stuff and True20 for my modern and future stuff. I've been running True20 games for the past six months, but I'm about to switch over to Pathfinder for Rise of the Runelords.

Print versions of RoD (Black and white and color both available) can be purchased here: Lulu.com

The PDF version can be bought right here at Paizo.

Also, the RoD line is getting support, so you don't have to worry about this being a fire and forget product.

Alright, this concludes shameless self promotion time.

Looks interesting. I have been thinking of giving True20 another go in a modern campaign, the last was a fantasy and it didn't really fly but that could be the player comfort level not the system. My biggest problem with True20 was the less than impressive support products. Nice to see someone stepping up to produce some genre books for it. I picked up Reign of Discordia for possible source material in my True20 drift of Stargate I am looking to run (AEG/Spycraft makes my teeth hurt) along with the RDP Technothrillers: A True20 Espionage Toolkit. As soon as Paizo sorts out a strange Apache error I will download and take a look.

Eh I actually enjoy using d20 Modern with my friends, we ran a Beyond The Supernatural / Buffy sorta campaign, was damn fun. I don't understand the gripes with the system.

I ordered a ton of Green Ronin modern stuff when Paizo ran their sale, I'll be sure to check it out once I pick my package up when I go home heh.

What are specific complaints that people had about modern d20? Are they issues that we could fix up with a Pathfinder? I used to play a lotta contemporary games from Palladium like Ninjas and Superspies, BTS, etc...so I'm always keen on getting games that can retain some of that feel without being completely broken.

But yeah, if Paizo rolled out some Modern d20 materials I would definitely take a gander at it.

True to their stellar customer service I was able to download and devour this book. I am impressed. TRUE20 and RoD ftw.

Then let me promote for you. I put up a review after my read through of Reign of Discordia and I encourage others to give it a look. Nice Work.

After being disappointed with the supplements that GR put out and the writing style of the core book (aka the big green book of stereo instructions) I didn't go looking for 3PP for True20 product. I now see the error of my ways and repent. Ok not really but I will give True20 another chance.

Thanks for the review, man. I'm glad you like it, and it looks like you really get what this product is all about.... even if you don't end up using it in its own universe.

Ooh, Darrin, I just listened to your interview at Atomic Array, and I must say that Reign of Discordia sounds SWEET! I've been jonesing for some space action for a while, and I'll be picking this up shortly. Now, if only I can meld the unholy space adventures from Sinister Adventures with this. Mwahahaha! >:D

Reign of Discordia is a very worthwhile purchase. I reviewed on Paizo. True20 is also just one of the best game systems if you like D20/3.5 but sometimes dislike the rules getting in the way of the story.

Of course, I also have self-promoting reasons, as I wrote a True20 book for RDP as well, a Vehicles supplement that includes many science fiction vehicles for planetary action to complement Darrin's excellent space opera genre.

Lou Agresta, here. I'm Logue's line manager for Dark Horizons and Cold Black, and I just wanted to chime in that Reign of Discordia is awesome! Really and truly. Mr. Drader outdid himself, and I'm saying that even if it reduces my own line's sales because true is true. 'Nuff said.

a modern campaign setting for Pathfinder would rock. Set it in like 10000AR. My biggest beef with Urban Arcana was that it was Earth. I want to see how a fantasy world evolves into a modern world. How such a high magic world as Golarion shifts towards a human-centric technological society.

Modern Absalom would be cool to see.

So would Steampunk Golarion >.>

Adamant Entertainment wants to "pathfinderize" the d20 modern system. See long post here.
