Setting - Khorani Empire. 600 year old empire that is in the process of collapsing under it's own weight.

The Khorani Empire is divided up into 23 different Satraps. You are in the Garada' Satrap which is mostly made up of several large islands and a western coastal area known by the locals as the Michelvian Kingdom. Less than 400 years ago, the region was ruled by the Michelvian dynasty before becoming consumed into the Khorani Empire under Emporer Sartos VI. While it's been several generations since the conquest the people of the former Michelvian kingdom's independant spirit runs high. Unlike the Khorani most Michelvians come from temparate, heavily forested areas. Towns in the area are connected by old imperial roads that pre-date the Khorani by several centuries. Also unlike most of the Khorani empire, the Garada' Satrap is not the most productive. Towns are further apart and not geared towards creating large surpluses. After several hundered years, the Michelvians are still fairly surly when it comes to giving up their goods to what is essentially a absent if benign Imperial presence. In the last 20 years the Imperial presence has dwindled considerably. Most of the Imperial troops present serve more as a cadre than a real military force. There have been rumors that the Khorani are involved in a civil war back home and that they have little time for maintaining their frontier Satraps. Despite this, the Imperial city of Delos is alive and well. It is a coastal city and is part of the Delosian Trade League. Delos features an Imperial Seat which is currently held by the weak and miserly Satrap Ikaros. Ikaros is an elector though and because of this hereditary title he has political power back home. Delos features a university and an Imperial Military academy and is widely regarded as a respected city with a great, though mixed cultural heritage. Your characters come from Delos and if you are human you are of Michelvian stock (like most of the city).

Here is the set up...

Many years ago five street waifs were adopted by a man named Douven Staul. Douven was a professor for a local university and ostensibly needed help tending his farm while he performed his studies. Life on the farm wasn't easy but it was better than the orphanage. Douven was a thoughtful man but he was forever preoccupied with his work and not always attentive to the needs of five boys. You are one of these boys...now grown and on your own pursuing a career amaziingly different from your four "brothers."

When you were twelve Douven met a woman named Katherine. Katherine brought Douven to life...he became enegized and the bond between him and the five boys became truly one of father and sons. You have missed him, Katherine and your brothers greatly. A month ago you received a letter from Katherine asking for your help. Douven was late returning from one of his trips. He had travelled to a town on the fringes of the frontier named Winterhaven. He was looking for the ruins of a dragon's tomb. As of today he has now not been heard from for three months. You promised Katherine that you'd find him and return him to her. You and your four brothers are now nearing Winterhaven. You are travelling the ruined remnants of the king's road wondering how someone could live out here let alone have a whole town out here....

M Tiefling Warlock-Rogue

Ahh, the days and nights of our beloved land.
We have at last found our long lost father and saved him from certain doom from that bastard gnome. But we have slain him and his fellow cohorts and sent them all to certain doom.
I am envious of the cleric, father gave him the pretty amulet. Oh well I will get my own someday. Oh yes the sparkling gem stone. I wonder if thorin will let me hold it during our trip back? thinks Mon. "Are we heading back to town now? Father can tell us story's of his travels abroad." Mon asks everyone else.

m

The wax positive -

The cast of the ring that you made, according to Douven, is a guild ring for the Mages of Saruun. During the walk back to Winterhaven he tells what little he knows about them. They are a small and secretive order of mages. They have enough money and influence to maintain membership in the Delosian League (which is the de facto power in Delos these days), but they don't reside there. They have some type of settlement in the Border Peaks east of Delos, but he can't recall the details. It seems strange that one of their members would be way out here, though.

Male Dwarf Paladin

I would like to check the foot prints of the two sneaky guys we just sent to the underworld. And Mon I am going to smack you with the broad side of my axe if you keep getting my name wrong. We have been brothers for a long time now....

m

The footprints match their shoes but don't match any other footprints you have seen...these prints are smooth (no hobnails), short and wide. The footprints from the scene of the murder were long and narrow with a smooth print and short and wide with hobnails.

Male Dwarf Paladin

And Mon if you think I am going to let you carry anything you are out of your mind. The last time I let you hold a bag of coin, I found the bag a couple of days later laying on the floor of our room empty.

M Tiefling Warlock-Rogue
Thorend wrote:

"I am sorry Sore_end. Heehee. I didn't want to hold anything any ways. Hmph." Mon snickers and runs toward Dad.

After that mon says, "Should we head back to town? I bet Dacs chainmail is ready."

M Tiefling Warlock-Rogue

This is a out of character post
Mon wonders to him self if there is any thing else laying around that might be worth something.

Mon makes a perception check for any thing of value laying around. (1d20 9=16)

m

To Mon - Nothing jumps out at you (literally or figuratively)

I am assuming you are all heading back to town?

Some maintenance stuff...

John P. posed an interesting question - "...it may be possible to shift my character into being a MU. If I can, would the party survive without a healer? I'm told MUs are more powerful now."

I think a wizard character would serve your group well though I am concerned that the loss of healing could be tough. I am wondering if a wizard with the multi-class cleric feat might be a good middle ground? I haven't had a chance to look at how this would work yet due to work. Any suggestions?

Also, Mon Soul is considering a switch to warlock multi-classed rogue which will make for an interesting combination to be sure.

I have also told John P. that he can change his race/name/identity if he wishes. I want him to have the opportunity to personalize his character and the break between level 1 and 2 would be the best time to do this. I don't think John has the PHB yet so if anyone can give him some advice or look up things for him that would be great.

Male Dwarf Paladin

If Thorend becomes a pally then we would be adding healing.

M Tiefling Warlock-Rogue

If the cleric changes to a Magic user, I will definitely need to change to a warlock/rogue. I can use the vampiric embrace which will give me temp. hit points every time a cursed foe parishes. I am totally fine with that. The warlock has more stealth ability I think. I wouldn't need cover to make stealth check I would have misty step and shadow walk.

Mon says "I am guessing we are finished here at the grave yard so lets head back."

I think though not everybody has signed up for this board yet.

Yes that could be a good idea. I think it would be worth while and indeed maybe we'll get some additional info or we could be reviving an important person involved in the opening of the void.

After all it does seem odd that she is out here.

Only heros can be raised. Normal people cannot. There may be something that would allow us to speak to the dead but that is about all we can do. Of course this discussion is out of character. When have we ever seen someone raised from the dead?

Male Dwarf Paladin

In my training as a fighter for Kord, I have heard that it may be possible for a very heroic person to be brought back to life but have never seen it. This young woman would not be a canidit for such a gift from a god.

Male Dwarf Paladin

Kord has granted me the ability to heal 3 times a day now. Not sure this will help if Lance leaves us since he could heal at least twice per encounter.

M Human (Michelvian)

If this woman was wearing this ring she might be of rank to be savable, however Avandra is the only temple I know of that is close enough to perform this ritual and they have very strict rules on who qualifies for this service. I doubt the woman would qualify given the poor history between the Mages of Saruun and Avandra. A divination might be more likely but that would require Siser Linora to make the trek to the body and she's loathe to leave the confines of Winterhaven. We'd need to find some way to get the mage from the falls to Winterhaven.

He shrugs and continues...

These rituals take time and cost a lot to perform. That bastard Agrid the gnome took my coin purse and spent it on hiring those four thugs you killed back at the dragon burial site. Knowledge of this particular woman's intentions or history won't change the fact that we have some whacked out Orcus priest trying to bring the abyss to Winterhaven's door step. It's hard to say what the right thing to do is, but we don't have much time to do it in.

Mon bites his lip and then with a drop of blood on his lip finaly says "Well Pops....uhh...we could, well I mean we have earned...uhh hmmm.."

Mon stops and thinks to him self for a second."Gosh darn it Pops, we have a bit of coin that might pay for it but damn it, it better be worth it. That was some hard earned coin that we have and it better not be used for information that is useless. Maybe though we could at least go get the wizard and bring her into town. Maybe we could get a better price then making Siser Linora come all the way to it. Or is a divination required to be performed at the location?"

M Human (Michelvian)

Douven looks at Mon critically then sternly growls,

What have I told you about greed Mon? It will be your undoing one of these days and I will be greatly saddened when it does.

I have no idea if she would have anything valuable to pass on or not. That's why people do a divination is it not? Any anger you have that results from what she says will be solely your responsibility. Do not inflict it on your brothers.

Male Dwarf Paladin

I am sure these rituals take a day or more. I think we should focus our energy and time on keeping the rift closes. After that we can investigate the death. What are you in love with this person whom you have never meet? Or should I say lust??

M Human Mage Level 2

JohnP: I've got the 3 book set. I'm pretty sure I want to switch to a War(Attack) Wizard over being a Control(Defensive) Wizard. Would that mess up the party's balance?
I'll be human. We have some in the party right?

Let's focus, we have to try to stop the fools that want to open the rift or there will be a lot more dead.
They needed a special mirror.
Do we have any way of keeping them from getting another one? Is that what we need to put our efforts into?
Would it do any good to go back to town and ask about/study up on Rift Opening 101?

Male Dwarf Paladin

I think we should go back to town, see if Valthrun has come back with any information on how to keep the rift from opening. If he is not back we may need to track him down. And then go to the Shadowkeep to see if we can stop whomever from opening the rift.

A smirk creeps across Mon's face

Yes your right Father indeed it maybe my undoing and it is indeed a terrible task for me to over come. Mark my words though, I intend on helping us all. So I will gladly go on yours and my older brothers words. For they always ring truthful when my heart is burden with gold. More importantly it is the task that has been laid at our feet to destroy those who are intent on opening the rift. So I as well say we head back to town and talk with Valthrun and see what news he has brought back. So we are off to town then.

m

The trip back to Winterhaven is uneventful until you reach Winterhaven, itself. You notice that the guard on the gate has been boosted to four and that the gates are actually closed despite the fact that it is still daytime.

There is a slight delay as the gates are opened for you. The normally effusive guards are strangely quiet and evasive as you pass through the portal. You see Valthrun's wagon parked outside of Wrafton's and Valthrun and Pedraig in animated discussion in the doorway to Wrafton's. Pedraig is wearing Khorani battle armor and looks more the warrior than you have ever seen him in the past. His expression is dark and angry while Valthrun appears to be attempting to placate him about something. You can also see that 2 large siege engines have been wheeled out into the market green. and are sitting ready with large piles of rocks near each.

You catch Valthrun's eye and he shoots a warning look your way and holds up a hand to keep you back.

M Human Mage Level 2

I'm assuming nobody is near by.
(whisper to the group) Brothers, this can't be good. Pedraig looks he's about to be attacked. And from the way the guards and others are acting, I'm afraid they may think we are in league with the bad guys. I wonder what lies the unknown villain has told about us. Which one of us brothers has a high charisma and would be good at negotiating in case, we need to convince Pedraig that we are not with the bad guys.

(whisper to the group) Alternately it could be that Pedraig and the rest are just scared that they are going to be overwhelmed. How can we find out what info they have that we don't? Will Valthrun fill us in?

I missed the previous games. Is Valthrun someone we can trust? Cause otherwise I think he's the agent of the bad guys.

M Tiefling Warlock-Rogue

Valthrun is our is the local wise man who went to a neighboring town to seek more help and information for us. I have a diplomacy of 5.

After seeing the exchange between Valthrun and Pedraig, Mon speaks up "We better go check and see if Draconis's armor is ready yet. We can catch back up with Valthrun after that and see what he has found out for us."

M Human Mage Level 2

I have a diplomacy of 1. I defer to Mon. Why do we need to see a man about armor?
"Good idea." says Arin. "Hopefully things will have calmed down by then. Also, the armorer should have some truths and rumors about what's going on."

m

As Arin and Mon start to shuffle a little towards Thair's Blacksmithy Valthrun's tension seems to ease a bit. Pedraig shifts his gaze to your group and you notice his frown does not soften. It's obvious he's upset about something and your group is somehow involved. It's also obvious, though, that it has to do with your decision to go to the source of the problem and try and shut down the rift and not due to any skullduggery on Valthrun's part. If anything, Valthrun has probably been honest with Pedraig about the reality of the situation and Pedraig doesn't like it.

You know from your conversation with Pedraig last night that he'd prefer you stayed back and help defend Winterhaven. You have five in your group which would increase the size of the town guard half again its current number. Pedraig's confidence in the villagers ability to defend the town is slight at best so your presence on the walls would be a huge boost. Pedraig does seem to have recovered from his hangover induced funk from the morning but you aren't sure that the current, sober mood is an improvement.

Dac's armor should be done at Thair's (this is chainmail he had commissioned to have made). You can see the dark billows of smoke coming from Thair's chimney so you know the forge is still being used.

M Human (Michelvian)

You boys go ahead, I'll see if I can knock some sense into that Khorani blockhead.

Douven departs from your group and hobbles over to Valthrun who greets your father warmly. Even Pedraig's mood shifts a bit. He doesn't recognize Douven so Pedraig adopts his political face. Valthrun clasps your father's shoulder and suggests that the three of them go in and share an ale while Douven enlightens them with his experiences.

M Human Mage Level 2

"I hope Dad can fill him in. If we can stop the rift being opened, then the town doesn't need defending. Even if we can hold them at first, a siege can defeat us." says Arin. "defending the town would be just be delaying the inevitable."

"My brothers, I must have taken a blow to the head during battle, I don't remember..." says Arin sheepishly, "Do you think there someone in town I or we can go talk to and brush up on the lore about rifts? I'm hoping to find out if there a key point, a lynch pin we should be looking for during our explorations and encounters. It seems to be a good idea to break any mirrors we see on the villains."

Now that I'm a barely 2nd level wizard, should I know anything about rifts? Maybe the warlock has knowledge since he deals with demons? My rift knowledge comes from RIFTS, so I don't think that counts.

m

Despite the different game system the basic facts remain the same. A rift is a portal into a different place, world, dimension. Go ahead and give me a knowledge arcana roll and we will see what else you know about these things. Valthrun is probably your best source of information on rifts outside of your own knowledge. He has just returned from the main town on the island, Idiora, to see what else he could acquire knowledge-wise about this particular rift. So, when he's done with Pedraig he should have more info for you

Since I am with Arin I will assist with the knowledge check.

"Hmm, I seem to remember something about those rifts." Mon replies.
Knowledge arcana on rift (1d20 6=14)

M Human Mage Level 2

Arin thinks and checks his notebook for anything to do with rifts.
( Along with his spell book, he keeps a notebook full of scribbled notes and bits of info that he thinks might be helpful someday, like "There is a rumor that gelatinous cubes will follow a trail of cinnamon power." and "It's not a good idea to kid a Tiefling about hats."
For my Arcane knowledge roll, I rolled a 4 with at a +10 bonus from int and training and level, so 14.

you can use Invisible Castle for your rolls. Invisible castle

http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/ On the very bottom is the BBCode link. If you click on the code following it, that will copy the code then you can paste it into your post here. Do a test. Also if you type your name into the box on top, you will be able to use the search box there for all of your previous rolls. Pretty cool die roll site.

Male Dwarf Paladin

I will be going with Mon and Arin. And if Draconis just stands there I will grab him and drag him along.

I need to find a heavy shield. And some healing potions.

Male Dwarf Paladin

Valthrun is the sage of the town. He said he needed to go to the next town to get more information on the rift. I am glad to see he is back. Bairwin is someone who left right after he did and I suspect that he is in league with Iron Tooth. Ooo we should search his house from top to bottom to see if there is anything there.

Male Dwarf Paladin

Padraig is probably mad because we left the town to look for our father while Valthrun when to get more info. He really wants us to defend the town. Hopefully the news about the mirror being broken and delaying the opening of the rift will help calm him down. Where is Buc?

M Tiefling Warlock-Rogue
Thorend wrote:

Yes indeed and Thair the Blacksmith should also have our crossbow bolts ready as well. I sure could use some now that I am almost out.

m

As you approach Thair Coalstriker's smithy you can see that they have had a very busy day. You see four other villagers have now stepped up and are helping maintain the fire and help with the mundane tasks while Thair, Joey, and Rory continue to work into the dusk. They look exhausted but proud of their work.

Thair turns your way and almost looks comical as he blinks the sweat out of his strangely clean eyes, white and blue in a face black with soot. He grins tiredly and welcomes you back. Joey is sitting on the low stone parapet around the edge of the building cross-legged as he is tying points to arrows that have been freshly fletched. Rory is busily hammering rings into the hemline of a nearly complete chain shirt.

if you like you can make a perception roll here

"Aye," Thair admits ruefully,"I'm sorry for the quality of the shirt. It's the best we could do in a day full of a mountain of other things to be done." He grimaces ruefully and gestures to Dac,"bring it back when you are done killing the beasties so we can re-do the links and clean it up properly. It will serve for now though." He also hands you a bucket of crossbow quarrels. "I think there's 50 or so in there to share amongst yourselves. That's the most that Pedraig will let me give ya given you are leaving the town. Now...for shields. I don't have any but there is a bunch of weapons piled near the big ol siege engines they dragged out this afternoon. If you tiptoe over there I suspect no one will mention it to Pedraig if you keep it down low. They have Winterhaven's crest on them so don't let him see that you have them. He thinks your intentions are foolish. I for one am glad you are looking to fight there rather than here. I'd hate to see any of the villagers get hurt. These are nae fighting folk and even with spears and shields they won't last a day. Their hearts are good but we know what that's worth against the likes of that Orcus fellah."

M Human Mage Level 2

Arin rolled a 17 + 12 (passive perception) = 29
Arin makes a point to direct his words to his brothers and Thair. This may be common knowledge to the town but there is no reason to cause a panic if it's not. "Thair, you are right. If only some of the lore about Orcus was true, we would need dozens of Epic level heroes to defend this town if Orcus got loose. Preventing the rift is our best option."

Male Dwarf Paladin

I am not going to even roll perception. Since I changed to a pally my perception now sucks big time.

I think I will go over to the pile and take a look while Padraig is in the tavern with Valthrun and our father. I will just bundle it with my backpack to cover the front so that the emblem is not showing. Do not need it in town. We should also search Bairwin's house throughly.

m

Arin's keen eye notices a bundle of 20 unique arrows beneath the large stack of arrows that are being made for the town guard. The town guard arrows have white and brown fletchings and are fairly crudely made (by Thair's standards anyway). The bundle at the bottom are made from a paler wood and have white and green fletchings.

M Tiefling Warlock-Rogue

Perception on arrows. (1d20 1=2)

I think those bolts aught last for now. You see anything interesting Arin?

Kurt you should put the perception results in a spoiler with something like - if we roll higher then a __ then look at the spoiler. That way when someone post their rolls we can ask them what they saw.

m

Like this? Only Arin can read this one...or anyone who rolled above a 20

Spoiler:
Arin realizes that the shaft and fletching match that of the broken arrow shaft found near the dead mage

M Tiefling Warlock-Rogue
Sturmkraehe wrote:

** spoiler omitted **

Yep but I can tell what it says cause I didn't roll above a 20...;-). Thats cool that way we wont know the secrets until Arin tells us. Unless you think we would be able to tell if one of us made the check.

m

Anyone choosing to go to the siege engines will find the following there...

Spoiler:
One town guard, a young guy who makes a point of keeping his back to you as you approach. In the pile you can see several old shields of varying quality and size from a few huge tower shields all the way down to a buckler or two. There are also a few old and battered helmets and some scraps that look like vambraces. There are also some freshly made spears courtesy of Thair and his apprentices.

Thorend wrote:

[ooc]No I will go with Thorend to collect my chain mail. I have a diplomacy of 8 and if necessary a intimidate of 10. A little bit of garlic in tonights dinner perhaps I can a bonus for any intimidation rolls that come along this evening[ooc]

[/QUOTE="Dac"]No need to tug the shirt tails Torend, I'm coming. Perhaps Thair Coalstiker will have a few more cross bow bolts ready for us as well[/QTOTE]

Male Dwarf Paladin

Testing dice roller for perception but I know it will not be good
1d20+1=3 I am leaving the blacksmiths for the pile of shields. Is there a difference between a tower and large or hugh?

m

I don't have my books handy but I am pretty sure there are just two shields sizes at this time. I will house-rule a tower shield at this time. It will grant an extra 1 AC but also have an additional -1 armor penalty due to it's bulk. I might change this rule after a little more thought, but this seems pretty intuitive.

Thorend quickly finds a few shields that could meet his needs. He does see an attractive heater with the Winterhaven crest painted across the front. It's a little dinged up, but will serve its purpose if you like.

Dac can pick up the chainmail from Thair if he likes Don, read the above where Thair explains the condition of the armor if you haven't already
