Speaking as a gay guy, i'd like to see more half-naked women in these books (and, of course, guys).

It isn't 1920's mentality/politics which scare me. It's 1820's mentality/politics. Equality and empowerment doesn't need to come through rendering people sexless.

In all honesty, my greater concern is verisimiltude.

However, I find it laughable to suggest that people are rendered sexless by wearing appropriate clothing for their job/circumstances.

I don't have a problem with fantasy art characters getting naked when they're in a suana, or about to have sex, I get annoyed when they are wearing fetish wear to fight ogres!

Or are they using their feminine wiles (or whatever the male equivalent is) to defeat the monster?

Liberty's Edge

Allright, who the hell is getting politics in my fantasy?!?! Seriously, stories have been built on the "damsel in distress" genre (if you will) for centuries. Does that mean that women should be objectified and marginalized in fantasy? Obviously not, but RPGs have come a long way over the years (IIRC, didn't D&D originally have a cap on a female character's strength?). Women are in positions of power in current RPG materials, they are given equal footing as far as adventuring goes, etc.

LOL - I was thinking something similar.

Has an "equal time" settlement been proffered as a means of mediation? Allow for ample viewing time of lasses in chain mail bikinis, so long as there is an equal amount of lads in chain loincloths for those that prefer more exposure of male anatomy. Problem solved. (Well, except for the rampant sexism in fantasy art, but that's an argument for another thread.)

This thread more or less proves that necromancy exists in real life.

If your greater concern is verisimilitude, you're playing the wrong game. DnD is not a historical re enactment. The world it portrays is much more similar to the covers of a billion dime novel fantasies than it is to any time in history.

Personally I like erotic art, and certainly do not mind seeing more scantily clad women. At the same time I do realize men's fantasy can be somewhat disturbing to women gamers so it might be best not to confront them with it, a small sacrifice for my fellow female gamers.

Women and men tend to be wired a bit differently, it is good to keep the gaming experience enjoyable to both, though I do not oppose products that are specifically made for people more interested in erotic fantasy I don't think Paizo's core products should be included in that.

"Erotic art" sounds like "soft core porn". That's not what I'm talking about. I don't want the core books to look like Conan d20. I'm talking about images more like

http://media.photobucket.com/image/fantasy/SpurfheadJones/fantasy-927.jpg

http://media.photobucket.com/image/fantasy/SpurfheadJones/fantasy-927.jpg

http://media.photobucket.com/image/fantasy/SpurfheadJones/fantasy-927.jpg#! oZZ14QQcurrentZZhttp%3A%2F%2Fmedia.photobucket.com%2Fimage%2Ffantasy%2FLaGa mbler4%2FFANTASY%2F52314zppn018ei8.gif%3Fo%3D14

And it's not about women not liking these images. Some women do like these images, some women don't. Some men like these images, some men don't. But, then, some people like demons being in the book and some people don't.

Personally, I don't care what the general public thinks of what I read, but I do like covers with the Iconic heroes like Merisiel and
Seoni etc... give the Fighter enter stage with the Dwarven Ranger on the cover fighting an Oger or something and inside add the other pics :)

Gandalf, Aaragorn and Legoals were all depicted in Fellowship with no armor and survived. A female fighter would not sit there and toe to toe with a man, giant, dragon, whatever. She would be crushed. She would use mobility and footwork whenever possible.

I don't recall Gandalf, Aragorn, or Legolas being dressed in a skimpy or scantily clad outfit.

ProfessorCirno wrote:
Also, the same logic could apply to men (why again would a woman be crushed while standing toe to toe with a man?). Ergo, all artwork of men will now have them depicted in leather thongs; I'm sure the fangirls of Valeros will be pleased to know. This one line validates the entire thread, I think.

If armor is so important, then how do you explain soldiers surviving battles after gunpowder comes into play. There are many swashbuckling epics that have heroes in little or no armor whatsoever. The three musketeers, Jack Sparrow, Zorro and many others come to mind.

Plot armor.

Incidentally, they musketeers were a used guns. They were called the MUSKETEERS for god's sake. .

Talek & Luna wrote:
Please, saying it is plot device is really weak. Professional soldiers stopped wearing body armor because it was not effective agains guns. They still got into sword fights and duels not to mention beyonet charges. The armor is only useful in large meele where you get hit at odd angles because you can hardly tell friend from foe.

You can have an attractive female character that is scantily clad and still be considered a threat. She may rely more on dodge, mobility and spring attack than power attack or cleave but it can definitly be done.
ProfessorCirno wrote:
There's a difference between light armor and HEY GUYS LOOK AT THESE BIG OL' BITS. Leather armor wasn't form fitting, it wasn't sexy, it wasn't cleavage exposing. It was horrible, smelly, lice infested, and bulky.
Talek & Luna wrote:
Any armor had that quality if not cared for. Crusaders were allowed to take scullery maids with them on crusades to clean their clothing and prevent the grime, lice and dirt you speak of. Besides we are talking about fantasy and not real life. No man in armor could take a hit from a giant in real life and survive. Nor would you want to be in full plate when a fireball goes off. All fantasy aspects can distort real life. Singling out women in fantasy apparel as the stake in the heart for the genre is quite lame when so many fantasy tropes can be ridiculed as not being believable compared to real life combat.

Alternate answer: STOP. BUMPING. THIS. THREAD.

Please for the love of god let this die.

You know what? You know that other thread, asking on how to get female gamers? THIS IS WHY YOU NEED TO ASK. THIS IS THE PROBLEM.

This thread is every awkward sweaty neckbeard that we all hate and want to remove from our games. This thread is everything wrong with us.

I think it's a sad state of affairs, really. Everyone's up in arms about how every fantasy image should or should not be sexy, and for what sex. It has been pointed out that every magazine section of a store today has around fifty magazines depicting sexy females, and a few males, on their covers. Nobody really worries about that today. There wouldn't be huge numbers of those magazines unless women WANTED those magazines. Fact is, it's been a general problem for magazine producers that men don't buy lifestyle magazines.

And through it all: In the dash to make everyone sexy, why can't one or two people be beautiful? It's not the same thing, and has never been. I want to see beautiful people in my RPG supplements. As it stands today, they're sexy, tough, battered, sweaty, dead, scary, but rarely beautiful. Sure, when you're battling ogres, all of the above are appropriate, but must every image be an action shot? The pic where Kyra and some others are looking through an arch is great.

Feh. I am probably just a deviant for thinking this. Silly me.

Dark Archive

You know what I want? Mediocre and ugly females. This is coming from a guy.

Yeah it's great and all seeing in the APs and material from Paizo and many other companies showing off female NPCs as sexy, beautiful, etc.

What I want to see is the "6's" or the "4's". It seems entirely too good to be true every woman who isn't a hag, old, or mutated be gorgeous.

CotCT comes to mind, the fortune teller in the beginning is described as attractive. But so is the Queen, her bodyguard, etc.

Social conditioning doesn't make something stop being bad.

The men in China liked small feet, but it was the mothers who inflicted the torture on their daughters.

I'd like to take this moment to note that this thread's been bumped so many times you'd think participants were working on the Lich-loved feat.

While not justification of the perils of leaving boobiefruit free where all can see, it does somewhat show the power of the discussion of scandalously-garbed members of the opposite gender.

Actually I know some female gamers that would agree with the topic. At least three like to draw naked women and at least one of them draws them really wonderfuly.

It's actually the unpublished post-lich-loved feat that was considered too scandalous for the Book of Vile Darkness: Lich Molester.

Lich Loved requires willing sexual contact with a lich. With Lich Molester? Quite the contrary....

Actually Lich Molester requires Lich-lover feat. Lich-loved is followed by Lich Molested feat. Those are separate feat trees but both are strongly connected to this thread.

I'd actually call the Lich Lover feat "Lich Lech."

This is not to be confused with "Lech Lich" which are special liches created by the Runelord of Lust.

They tend to be named "Hugh" and be surrounded by succubi wearing bunny ears.

And here I was going to reference the very, VERY *NSFW* Maelora, though most of her work is 4E stuff, when it's not Final Fantasy themed. I've been trying to coax towards FantasyCraft and Pathfinder art, but it's slow goings.

I wonder if this is what prompts a baalor/pit-fiend named 'Larry' to take a competitive, baser, crasser approach, coupled with a gratuitous rivalry.

Hopefully Larry watches out for sociopathic gunslingers with holy bullets...

Maelora's work is excellent, she's been on my watch list for months.

Also be sure to check out the work of Kristin Collins, 4WFG's favorite cover artist. To be fair, her males are often "decoratively" attired as well.

There were lots of... "back problems" on Maelora's deviant site, so he had lots of chances to roll natural one on his checks.
