Ravenloft; The Hyskosa Scroll Table Top Chat

The wester tide crept up along the sand,
and o’er and o’er the sand,
and round and round the sand,
as far as the eye could see.
The rolling mist came down and hid the land;
And never home came she.

Welcome to the Table Top Chat thread. This is where we can discuss anything game related but out of character. For now I’d like to concentrate on finishing up the characters. Once the characters begin being finished I will start the story. I am very excited about this game. I look forward to seeing where it goes.

Wiglaf, I’m thinking that my guy might work quite well as a human from Earth also, probably British, could be French I suppose. Time of the crusades works for me – I kind of want him to be from a fairly low magic environment. However, if having a mage come from Earth doesn’t work for you, I’m happy to have him come from Golarion, possibly from a fairly backwoods area with not much in the way of trained wizards.

I haven't really got a name for him yet ... want to pin down an area of origin first.

Liberty's Edge

Well, the way I see it anyone coming from Earth would be coming from a 'no magic' environment.

Still, if you wanted to play a lone hermit type of person from Earth who studies heathen books and ancient lore that would be fine. He wouldn't have magical powers until he enters Ravenloft, but once there could discover the power by accident. His spell book being an ancient text that he found which is supposed to come from the library of Alexandria could work. Perhaps he is even descended from one of the original librarians who escaped before the final destruction.

If you want to go with a hedge-wizard from the Pathfinder setting that works too. Let me know what you like best and are most comfortable with.

Male Elf Rogue 1

Alright, well I have my character mostly whipped up and placed on a pdf character sheet. Do you have an email I could forward it to you at, Wiglaf? I'll put it up in this Alias's profile as well. Below is the link to my invisible castle roll for money and my expenses so far.

Liberty's Edge

It all looks good to me. Just, where did you find the cold iron dagger? I must have missed that somewhere.

Also, I'd rather not do things through e-mail to be honest. Just a little quirk I have when it comes to PbP. If you wouldn't mind posting the sheet in your aviator's profile that would be great. Otherwise, we can work something out.

Liberty's Edge

Putting it up in my avatar is fine, no worries about that.

And the cold iron dagger is just following the special material rules(a cold iron weapon doubles the cost of the weapon). I was using the SRD for doing my equipment, but now that I think about it the special materials portion of things is in the DMG rather then the players handbook, so if that is off limits its no problem.

Mothman, interesting choice of time period.

Actually, I was just jamming off the time period that Pendragon and/or yourself mentioned for your characters ... but I might go the Golarion route instead, not sure. Think I need to start putting together some idea of skills, feats, spells etc and see if that can inform me further.

Liberty's Edge

As much as it may not seem to be that big of a deal I'd rather that you didn't have that dagger to start with. I want everyone to start out with the same chances and opportunities for fairness sake.

However, if anyone has a particular item that they like which isn't in the PHB they can feel free to let me know. You "might" run into it, or something like it, as the game goes on. This is mainly for flavorful items though so think carefully on what would fit your character and their background. Sound fair?

Alright, basic character is up.

If there is anything you think should be changed or you still need to know, let me know.

Liberty's Edge

Looks good. You are all set.

Male Mothman Expert 5

Wiglaf,I've got some further ideas for my character, and started putting together some stats. I'll try to post something a little more concrete in the next 24 hours or so.

I'm tending towards coming from Earth as well.

Liberty's Edge

Sounds good. I look forward to seeing it when you're done. Well, with so many characters coming from Earth this aught to be REALLY interesting. I'm looking over the module now and almost salivating at some of the potential encounters.

One quick note, most of my Ravenloft material come from the old 2nd ed box sets. So, we may be mixing a few things here and there. As it stands I have no plans of forcing the classic Fear and Horror checks, so long as everyone role-plays an appropriate reaction to what they encounter. When it comes to the Dark Powers though we will take it by ear. Sound good everyone?

Dark Archive

I do have the 3.5 version for Ravenloft.

Liberty's Edge

At this point I'd rather stick with what I have. I do own a 3.0 Ravenloft Core Book, but it is currently in storage on the other side of the US. I don't think we'll run into too many issues though. If we do, though, would you be willing to feed me specific information?

Dark Archive

Sure.

Male Human, British Wizard 1

Hey, this is my character name and avatar. He’s a reclusive (and very minor) member of the British gentry, who attended university in either Oxford or Paris and has since become something of a recluse, derided by his peers for his pursuit of the improbably – arcane lore and magic.

Those of you planning to play Crusaders (Pendragon and Rad) – what era are you thinking? Richard 1 and Phillip Augustus were in the Holy Lands in the 1190s (Third Crusade) I believe. The Fourth Crusade was in the early 1200s. Rad, the persecution of the Templars did not begin until about 1307.

Dark Archive

Thanks for the historical background, Mothman. :D

Henry looks good. Well done. I'm about ready to start off the game thread. I'll add people in as their characters are completed. Please don't post until your cue.

Still need to do feats, skills, equipment, spells!

Sorry this is taking a while Wiglaf, it's a busy week for me this week ... I've worked out some of this stuff on paper, but I've not yet had a chance to put it all together and post it.

Dark Archive

Busy week here also.

Don't worry too much about it guys. This game will run at the pace you want it to. So long as everybody is having fun I'm good.

Thanks for letting me know though. I appreciate it.

Im still trying to figure out the history for my char =/

Liberty's Edge

I already have the basics, but when Im fleshing out my chacters, they tend to get a life of themselves and change some things.

Spoiler:

Im thinking about someone who (or whom?) was running from a crime that he commited, although he didnt think of it as one but, under such strong accusations, he stated to doubt himself (Im trying to find a crime that a very religious man would be in doubt if it is or not a crime, and because of questions about his act he fled to escape the inquisition [he is so religious that he wouldnt mind to go to the fire if it meas that he was being cleaned off of his sin, but would never be punished for a something that he tought was right) then joined the crusades to make penitence after he dicided that it was a crime, but a minor one.

Im also thinking about when he met Radavel's char, since he will play a paladin (probably a crusade), he could be aware of the "crime" that mine commited, maybe hes even one of the accusers.

Thinking about your questions I came up with something (just to answear those, not the reasons, that Im still figuring out how to put in my char's history:

What does he love?
Maybe a woman, perhaps she has something to do with the crime he
commited (Im thinking about sex before mariage)

What is he truly frightened by?
Divine anger. who knows if he was right when he fled? Because of that indecision God may have a different view on his act and judge him a sinner, sending him to hell. that would bring two fears: one from god and his divine retribution, the other from hell, since he's not certain taht he will not go there.

Does he have a life goal?
(thats the most difficult part for me until now)
after running away he wants to prove that he was right, that everyone were wrong for chasing and trying (in his point of view) murdering an innocent (himself)

What does he hate?
His own fear, the ones who accused him and, also, himself for not being able to define his own guilt or innocence

Male Human, British Wizard 1

In the interest of possibly establishing a connection (however tenuous) between Henry and Rad and/or Pen’s characters;

The most likely reason for Henry to leave his crumbling manor house would be in the pursuit of knowledge – rare books, scrolls, manuscripts, stone tablets and the like. No doubt warriors returning from the crusade would be a fair source of such things, so Henry has traveled (or is on his way) to London or Paris to procure some of these treasures brought back from the east.

His connection with the other two might simply be one of chance proximity; alternatively, he might have hired one or both as a guard or guide for his journey, or the names of one of your characters might have been supplied to him as someone who actually has one of these rare manuscripts in his possession.

The Exchange

Male Half human

What you think of it, Wiglaf?

Liberty's Edge

After giving your character some thought Pendragon, I have a few comments. I’ll not use the Spoiler tag because I’m thinking of ideas that can connect all three of your earthlings.

Pre-marital sex works as an issue. I don’t think your character would have to fear the inquisition, but her father is another matter. Throw in that her father is a fairly powerful Lord or Knight and you have a good reason for taking the Crusade to escape.

A good connection for Rad’s character could be that, during the time you were in the Holy Land you two met up, perhaps you were staying at a Templar Fortress. During that time your character, wracked with guilt over having committed the sin and then running away from it, confesses to his character the nature of your character’s sin. He then charges your character, for penance, to return home and place yourself at the mercy of the girl’s father. Your character could be unsure about this. It is a long way back, and you fear the family’s wrath, so his character agrees to accompany you upon your journey both to see that you complete your penance and to seek out new nobles and Knights that can be recruited to the Crusade.

Now, how to bring Henry in. How about this idea. Pendragon’s character sends a letter to the girl telling her of his intention to return. Somehow word spread that men from the crusades are coming. Henry, living only a few short day’s walk from the manor in question, decides to make the trip to try and discover if the crusaders have brought back any interesting texts that he can buy.

How does that sound?

Male Human, British Wizard 1

Works for me.

I should warn everyone that Henry is likely not to be able to contribute an awful lot to the party initially - as far as he is aware his spells don't work (so he probably won't begin with any prepared), he's not a melee combatant at all, I don't think it makes sense to his background to have him start carrying a missile weapon, and his main strength, his knowledge skills, will initially pertain to Earth, so probably have limited value in Ravenloft until he sort of learns the lay of the land.

Just so everyone is forewarned...

I think that you should start with the full lot, but use it only when in real danger, I mean, he doesnt even know that he has magic, nor that the world wich he is in has it. That way you can use spells when you really need them and then RP what happens everytime he casts something, he may be amazed, may be surprised or scared.

At least that is how I RPed a sorcerer that didn't know that he had magic.

It could work for you.

Liberty's Edge

I wouldn't worry too much about the magic Henry. I've got some tricks up my sleeve that will help you along the road to understanding the new rules. :)

So, how is everyone doing?

Thanks, Pendragon.

BTW, I'm writing my character's background and during the time period I selected (1300-1307) there appears to be no active crusade. Instead, there is intense cloak and dagger stuff between the king of france, the pope and the knights templar. I'm planning to have my character be a member of the grandmaster's personal guard, hence the preferred use of the greatsword. perhaps we can have our characters meet there.

we'll be drawn into the mists after the grandmaster dispatches us on a mission to the pope to denounce the king of france for being a heretic - a mission we'll not be able to complete.

This is just a rough sketch.

Is your dude based in France then? Early 12th century works for me. I was planning Henry to be a Brit from the lonely moors of Cornwall ... but he studied in Paris in his youth, so it's conceivable he could be back there, perhaps visiting the university. However the Crusades were over by almost 100 years by this point, so he's not really likely to want to hook up with you guys because you're returning Crusaders ...

Maybe he just happens to be in the same place at the same time. Or maybe he doesn't enter the mist with you guys at all.

Dark Archive

Yes, France.

Perhaps, the Inquisition has taken an interest in you. My character being a templar might be one of those seconded to the Inquisition.

Liberty's Edge

It sounds like you guys as well on your way to figuring this stuff out, so I'll keep out of it save for an occasional comment.

Male Human Fighter 1

Backstory:

Being a noble has its advanges, for an example, you are considered a great catch, and Childeric knew how to use that to "explore" the young women of his father's feud. Going from party to party, in different villages, he met more than a handfull of girls willing to marry him, but always with some excuse he fled the village by the first sign of the Sun just to meet another girl, in another party, that would dream about becoming a noble. This life is a good life, he used to think.

One day, in a ballroom dance he met Clothilde, daughter of André de Chauvigny and amazed by her beauty, he asked her to dance. Along with the spins and steps they had to take he convinced her to go to bed with him, that he would marry her and the union would benefit her father.

Without a second tought she went with him, just to wake up alone in her bed.

A few days later, while spending some time in his father castle, Childeric was summoned by his father, Adalric, whom recieved a letter by André de Chauvigny, wich demanded a marriage between his daughter and Childeric, also forcing an alliance between the two lords. But, before the cerimony, Childeric would have to pay for his sin and prove his allegiance to Philippe Auguste by joining him in the crusades and the siege of the holy land.

and so, to avoid a confrontation, wich would result in his father losing his own feud, he travelled.

Spoiler:
Now its up to Radavel to come up with a reason for our character to meet... or, he could be looking for me, after I spent some time with his chars sister, or something like that.

Wiglaf, if you want me to change something, just tell me so.
and don't worry about being slow to post. =)

For Pendragon

Spoiler:
How about the noble father of one of your many liaisons petitioned the Inquisition to have you examined for immorality and heresy? And I have been ordered to bring you before it.

The Exchange

Since we are in the same country, but different time periods, mine is based around 1189–1192 and yours 1300-1307 (as stated in a previous post that I completely missed for some strange reason.. maybe the mists.. maybe my tired brain playing tricks on me) we could use some literary liberty (I dont know the correct expression in english, sorry) and place the events of these two periods closer.
Im thinking that maybe I can delay the crusades a few yeas, and the events of your history could've taken place a few years early, this way we can meet without prejudice to anyones background.

Then your idea will be perfect. Also, for Henry Morgan, that would be quite useful, since the gathering of the french and english troops happend in Messina, he could be looking for a tome in that city, afterall its not very far from france and next to the Vatican.

Liberty's Edge

Male Mothman Expert 5

That works for me. You're right Pendragon, let's not get too hung up on real world Earth history - given that we won't be there for very long!

OMG, we are living on Counter-Earth! Gor, anyone?

That aside, I really think the Inquisition is an excellent plot device to get our characters together.

BTW, Wiglaf, I'm going for a gothic look for my character. Would it be possible to be a Bible and a couple of plenary indulgences (i.e. ribbons with wax seals plastered on his armor) for my PC free of charge?
