What happened to Mike?

Pathfinder Campaign Setting General Discussion

Paizo Employee Developer

I noticed that Mike McArtor isn't listed on Paizo's employee list anymore. He's also been strangely absent on the boards for a few weeks (since before the big deadline). Is there something I don't know?

Scarab Sages

His tag changed to (contributor).

WTF!

RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32

Wasn't he the Gamemastery editor before? (Look how crummy my memory gets when I don't have little tags to remind me.) With the Gamemastery line no longer containing Modules, maybe he moved on?

He was promoted from Associate Editor to Editor not that long ago. Perhaps this has something to do with them bringing on a new staff member? I'd be sad to see Mike go, and would hope that he continues to support the setting with freelance work.

I could also be jumping the gun, with tinfoil hat firmly planted atop my head.

I think he was kidnapped by Pirates!

Spoiler:
EDIT: If that doesn't make him come back with an explanation, nothing will

It'd be very much appreciated if someone from Paizo would explain what happened to Mike.

Maybe he's become a pirate. A pirate with evil motivations to kill all bronze dragons, gnomes, and ninjas.

I don't consider those motivations to be EVIL.

Paizo Employee CEO

Mike moved on to some new adventures in his life a couple of weeks ago. Actually, his last day was the day we shipped all those products off to the printer for GenCon. His last request as he walked out the door is that we don't make a big fuss over his leaving, but rather, just change his tag and let everyone notice his absence naturally. Which happened today. :)

Mike left Paizo on really good terms, putting in super human hours to help us get his baby, the Campaign Setting book, out the door. We all loved working with Mike here and miss his presence, but he just needed a change in his life and we were honored to have his help for these past few years. The good news is that he plans to still do freelance writing for us, so you should see Mike appear in the pages of Paizo products for years to come!

Btw, his replacement will be here in a couple of weeks. I hinted at this last week and this thread appeared to try to guess who it is.

Lisa,

Thanks for responding so quickly and letting us know. Its a relief to know he'll still be writing for Paizo as I really enjoyed his products. I'm a little sad to know he's not working AT Paizo, but working FOR Paizo as fits his schedule is a heck of a lot better than nothing.

Mike, wherever you are, I'm holding you to that magical traditions book, even if I have to wait a bit longer to get it.

FP

Mike will be sadly missed. Was lucky enough to meet him, and thought he was a great guy. Mike, if you ever get to read this (or if someone at Paizo can pass it on) I hope you find what you are looking for.

Scarab Sages

sad to see him go best of luck to em

Oh my. Loved Mike's work, glad to hear he will still do freelance work, so I can continue to enjoy his writings. Thanks Mike and wish you good times!

Mike is a great guy, wonderful to work with as a contributor when he is managing your product and giving you feedback or just making sure you have what you need. I wish him all the best in his new ventures.

But, my best memories of Mike were the rather spectacular deaths his characters received in my campaign some years back when he was playing, one having his brain sucked out of his head from across the room, and another being killed twice IN THE SAME ROUND. That's pretty hard to do, though it's easier when you're being attacked by a howling dragon with a persistent/clinging breath weapon. Ah Reinhardt, poor guy...

Dammit, Mike! There is suppose to be a big cacophanous send-off! Good luck to you, man. I hope you are still a presence on the board, because you bring a lot of awesome content to us.

Mike's ability to roll poorly at just the wrong moment is legendary. I believe poor Vyth was immortalized that way in Dungeon's pages.

I am really, really, going to miss working with Mike. My first published piece took three and a half drafts to whip into shape. Mike was there every step of the way with good ideas on how to improve it. But the editing side is just scratching the surface.

He's a stand up guy who always goes the extra mile. One little example. When I mentioned that Canada Day was coming up he made a point of sending a greeting (with the anthem) to all the Canucks who were writing for him that year. It's not like he had a lot of free time, or he was going to get anything out of doing something like that. It was just a nice thing to do, letting people know you were thinking of them.

That's Mike.

Sovereign Court

Bronze Dragon's gots lots of other stuff to do you know.

Is it true he's becoming a cryptozoologist, hunting for sasquatch?
Or is that something I just made up right now?

Dang it.. I was going to use the photos of Mike in that dress to blackmail him into getting me a nice res copy of the cover of dungeon 143... wtf.

Mike's going to be missed by all us fans. :(

Good Ninja Minion

Don't worry Master, we'll still guard the offices from infiltrators!

I hope Mike finds happiness in whatever he pursues.

Liberty's Edge

He said you ninjitas work for me now.
I'd show you the letter, but it mysteriously burst into black fire.

Mike's always been aces in my book -- maybe that's why he only rolls 1s.

I had a similar experience to Hal's with Mike editing a Bazaar piece I wrote. Mike spotted something in a query sentence for a Class Acts submission, and suggested that with a different approach it had the potential to be an Bazaar of the Bizarre submission. Three drafts later it turned into the one Bazaar piece I had published in Dragon.

That article would never have gotten off the ground without Mike's advice, encouragement and direction. If there's a greater compliment to his skills as an editor, I don't know what it is.

Ah, man. Now which Paizo employee am I going to poke fun at? Poking fun at Mike-Contributor just won't be as fun as poking fun at Mike-Editor. :(

Not that I won't do that though. :)

I agree with Hal Maclean. Mike was a top guy, of impeccable taste. He printed my one and only paid article in Dragon. He helped me develop other potential articles that ultimately didn’t get printed. Of course, I’d have had more material published if the magazines hadn’t been yanked, so thanks a bunch, WotC!

Best wishes to Mike in all his future endeavours!

Sovereign Court

Bummer.
I wish Mike good luck with whatever the future has in store for him.

I don't know too much about the products he worked on, but I was a never a big fan of his posting style (or his interests based on what he posted about) so I only have apathy. Though good luck on his new endeavors and all that!

Sorry for (comparatively) negative post in an otherwise love-fest. Carry on!

Mike! NO!

I've been so busy with RL lately, I hadn't noticed he was gone, I just figured he was too busy to post with his usual regularity.

Mike McArtor - you'll be missed my man. I hope to see you posting on here soon though, and I hope we get an update as to your "current adventures."

If not - I will send MY ninja minions after YOU. Then you will die a horrible shuriken related death. And there will be smoke bombs. And you will cough. A lot. Then you'll be punctured with shuriken again.

:D
