Teven:

Spoiler:
I've got you as having come in and warned Bray. He and the other village leaders have been discussing the news and evacuation plans. Now he's summoned in some of the "second-tier" major figures. Feel free to wing it; let me know if you need more direction. Basically, an army company will be here in three days' time. You were an advance scout.

Each of you is in the village of Woodcroft on a late summer afternoon when approached by a breathless Menir Bray, the headman's youngest son. He explains that Algrim Bray needs to see you in the meeting hall, immediately.

When you arrive, gathered are some of the principal figures in the village -- Algrim and Dorothea Bray, Narwyn Moonshield, and Yurk -- and a stranger, a serious-looking elf with twin longswords on his back and a brace of handaxes on a bandolier.

Algrim makes sure the doors are closed and then addresses the group. "This man, Teven, has brought us grim news. The forces of the false god Razmir are on their way to put us to the test of heresy. The Song of the Spheres has graced us with Her agent -- Teven, by chance, has reason to come to us with warning.

"Teven, please explain."

Male Human Warlock - Star Pact

Adar notes the others who arrived with him, finds a corner and slinks into it, watching the reactions of the others, especially Narwyn.

He is mostly quiet, but mutters nervously to himself. Those closest to him, or with the best hearing can make out the words "can't see" and "stars."

Male Elf Ranger 1

Looking at those gathered in front of him Teven, obviously agitated, takes a deep breath then says. "For the past 15 years I have served in the army of the false god." The words "false god" he says this with such venom and hatred that those in the room are taken back, they see murder in this elf's eyes. "And they repay this loyal service by taking from me a home and a station and worst of all they have killed my sister!" Taking the letter sent to him two days ago he hands it to Bray. Then takes a step back and another deep breath calmer he says. "They are coming for you and will be here in 3 days. If you fight they are 200 strong and I see little chance of success, I have seen this before. If you run then those who run fast may live. Regardless if you will have me then I will join you; my time serving false gods is over." Having told them his warning and making his offer Teven leaves the room to allow them to discuses there options and await there decision on his fate.

Hopefuly not too much melodrama. And if there is, well you told me to wing it.

As Teven leaves, Varlis meets him at the door, taking his arm.

"What will happen to your sister and family when the Rasmir find out what you have done? Perhaps you should stay, you are part of this now."

The half-elf's arm drops and he waits, concern written across his gentle face.

Then he turns back to the gathering and waits for any questions or information that he may be called upon to provide.

Khronos stands quietly in the room next to Narwyn. He listens to the ranger give his speach and says a quiet prayer to Desna for the soul of his sister, so brutally taken from this world. He looks around at those gathered and quickly takes stock.

Leaning down, so as only Narwyn can hear him, he states ...

"200 is more than we can hope to defeat here. If we hope to save these people from the false god's men, we must get them out now. Children and the elderly cannot hope to outrun such as these unless they get a headstart. I urge you to push this idea to the council. I do not wish to see the young slaughtered by the Usurper."

Sat on the floor with her son Kaelynne listens carefully to the stranger's words, a clearly concerned expression on her face and her arms instinctively wrap a little more tightly around the toddler. That is until he objects and squirms and she lets him go, allowing him to roam and explore a little, currently blissfully unaware of the fate ahead of him and the village. A little wide-eyed she scans the people gathered, watching their reactions closely. She'd always been quite comfortable in her martial ability up until this point.

Narwyn speaks up as Teven moves to leave, "Teven, hold, if you will."

"Khronos, that is precisely what we have been discussing, and why you are here."

She then turns to the headman. "I think we must get to the purpose, Algrim."

Algrim looks at the gathered folk. "We are indebted to Teven and Our Lady for bringing us this news. The elders have decided that Woodcroft will be evacuated." He pauses, then continues.

"Not all of us will leave. The elderly who can not endure the rigors of travel will stay. And the Council has decided that we will stay with them. This has all come about because of our faith, and we have infuenced the younger crofters away from the false god. We will now stalnd for our faith and take responsibility for our words and deeds.

"We have agreed that the five of you --," his gesture takes in Adar, Varlis, Khronos, Kaelynne, and (mumble), "-- will be given the responsibility of guiding our people to a new home. We have all observed you over the years, and you have shown the greatest potential -- and in some cases, the greatest actions -- to lead your generation.

"You will first take the villagers into the Greenwood. More than few miles in, the raiders will have difficulty following, and we'll see if those of us remaining can make things a bit more difficult for them." Yurk grins toothily at that.

"We will have a head start. The rest of the villagers will be told the news this afternoon, and given tonight to pack the bare necessities to take with them. You can take our horses and oxen to bear loads, mostly food, though carts and wagons would do you little good. You will still have to hunt.

"Once you are across the border into Ustalav, Razmir will not dare follow.

"Finally, Teven, whom most of us will owe our lives, will go with you. He has proven his worth already, and dares not return as a traitor. Further, Narwyn believes there will be more for him to do.

"Questions?"

"Ustalav? Are you sure we should be going there. Those I have conversed make me wonder if this is a good solution. Will my family be any safer there than here?"

Varlis' face is strained as he contradicts the elders.

Kaelynne stares on in utter disbelief at the announcement, briefly taking her attention fully away from her child. "I'm all for helping people relocate if you really think it's the best choice for everyone, but I'm really not sure if I'd be the best candidate for assisting in guiding the people. I..." She trails off as she spots her son toddling over to Teven, clearly intrigued by the newcomer.

"Oh, I'm sorry, he's at that painfully curious stage" She explains, obviously a bit embaressed over having to bring her son along but she has nobody to help keep an eye on him.

Dorothea responds, "You underestimate yourself, Kaelynne. Even aside from anything else, you are agile, perceptive, and you do not sleep. There are no others who do what you do."

At this point, Yurk speaks up (something of a rarity for him). "And you are not always unobserved when you believe you are." He does not explain this cryptic remark.

"I am sworn to defend those who dwell in this place" the big Paladin says into the growing tumult of objections.

"I see no way I can protect all of you from this scourge, but everyone must think on this. 200 trained warriors are on there way here with the express intention of destroying everyone who doesn't swear fealty to the false one. They will kill your children, your wives and sisters. They wil not think twice about this. The women and children at least must leave now and the only way is through those woods. We must send others with them so they have a chance to survive this trip."

The half elf looks sadly around the room, his heart heavy with what he is about to say "I will go with the travellers. It is better to face a series of rumours and myths than to stay and face certain death." He bends over and picks up the little one and walks him back to Kaelyn. "These children are to precious to to not try. Have faith in the wisdom of Narwyn, for she speaks with Desna's voice in this." He untangles the giggling child's hands from his beard and hands him back to her.

"However, if there is time, I would plan with those staying the best ways to defend themselves and a possible route of escape if the opportunity arrises."

Male Human Warlock - Star Pact

"I will go into the Greenwood with the rest. I know too well the dangers that lurk there. I would not have more children orphaned as I was by the vileness that lurks in the wood. But I fear the forest is no safer than the village.

"And I fear your gesture of bravery and faith is misguided. The warriors of Razmiran will not see it as bravery, they will not see a stand for faith. They will see people who have cast away their god, people who deserve no mercy. Make no mistake, headman, if you stay, you stay to die. You have children who are promising themselves. Would you orphan them, or do you expect them to die with you."

He turns to Yurk, "And you... you have watched over me since I was a boy. You are not one to ignore a reality so stark it stares you in the face. You will survive longest. Are you so very anxious to watch your friends die."

Adar settles back into his corner, wiping a tear from his cheek, "You should all come with us... the Razmiran folk have already shown us what they do to unbelievers."

Teven, obviously agitated, looks at Varlis with a frustrated frown and says in very low very calm voice. "Did you not hear me says that they have killed my sister. All the family I had died with her." He takes a moment to collect him self then begins for the door once more only to hear Narwyn call for him to hold. He turns to listen to her speak as a small child approaches him. With little interest in what Algrim is saying he squats down tilts his head and asks the child in a low voice so as not to be heard. "What is your name." The child tilts his head copying the Elf's action and says. "Uriel." Before he can ask the child any other question....

But for his sake we should both be paying more attention to Algrim." Teven then turns and begins to listen in earnest to the plans that Algrim is laying out.

Kaelynne raises a questioning eyebrow at Yurk's words but remains silent staving off personal curiousity in the face of the more serious matter at hand. Reclaiming her son from the kind paladin she shakes her head a little at the child. "..and what do we say when people a nice to us?" She asks little Uriel who concentartes for a moment before piping up.

"Thankyou?" He asks, giving a grin as his mother nods. Swinging around in her arms he looks up at the bearded man with wide eyes "Thankyou!"

Laughing a little to herself at how simple and wonderful the world was to a three-year-old the eladrin shakes her head a bit. Slowly she gives a nod at the heavier words around her and sighs sadly. "Don't worry, I am listening, it's a skill every parent learns to pick up quite quickly, multitasking... Speaking of which..."

She gets up and makes her way over to Adar and sits beside him, settling Uriel in her lap as she does so. Wordlessly she reaches over and tenderly wipes away another tear that rolls down the young man's cheek. "He's right Yurk" She agrees "Nobody should be deprived of the people they care about if it can be managed."

Algrim and the others listen to the observations and objections. Algrim looks to his peers, then speaks.

"You speak well, my friends, and it shows us we have made the right choices in you. Yes, we stay to die. My sons are grown; they will be able to help you in the wood. But we stay for three reasons.

"First, there are those in Woodcroft to old or ill to travel. We stay to stay with them.

"Second, Yurk has certain ideas about how to delay the Razmirans. Even if only for half a day, that increases your chances threefold. Their leadership will want . . . time with those of us who led the village in the new faith.

"Finally, as I said before, we four, more than any others here, are responsible for the trouble. Woodcroft was at peace for fifty years before the Varisians came. A few crofters even remember the time before Razmir came and brought his 'religion.' Had we not welcomed the Desnans here, the village could have been at peace for another fifty years and outlasted the false god.

"I do not say our welcoming the Song into our lives was a mistake -- never that. But this is the consequence, and if we can do anything to ameliorate the harm that comes, it is our duty -- to friends, family, and goddess."

At Teven's words, Varlis recoiled a little, "I didn't...no....well....I see."

He retreats into the background again as everyone discusses the exodus. The half-elf takes out a piece of parchment and ink. He quietly begins to make a list of the families and children.

Then a shortlist of what will be needed for the journey. Supplies and water. Means of carrying everything such as mules or donkeys. Tools. Pots and pans. The list begins to get bewildering at Varlis warms to the task.

As the discussion once again turns to planning and questioning, Khronos approaches Narwyn and says quietly "I shall follow your judgement in this milady, though I am torn in where my duty lies. I speak to you now with something my old mentor once told me. Dying for a cause is a noble act only if there is no other course. You speak with the power of the Goddess, and in this region that is a powerful gift. Not one to be thrown away lightly. When this fight nears the end, if there are no others for whom it is possible to help, then you should look for a means to save yourself. Your voice and actions may do more to bring down the reign of this pretender, moreso than your martyrdom."

The pain in the half elf's voice is obvious as he speaks the words, for he has grown very fond of this womans friendship in the past few years. He takes a deeper, steadying breath and continues "However, if no such opportunity arrises, then I offer you my service now in the absolution of Desna for your soul's protection. We may not get time for this later and there will be none others who can offer it for you when the time comes." These last words nearly choke in his throat.

Then he stands up and goes over to one of the elders. Quietly he asks, "look how do you plan to tell the families. Some may wish to stay. I don't mind running an impromptu festival show for the youngsters if you wish it. Or perhaps you intend a large scale meeting of the entire village?"

He hands over the supply list and details of the villagers.

I figured some might not be posting until today, but let's get this show on the road. The population counts below are shifted a bit from the setup, as I moved the younger teens to the adult category -- they've got to grow up fast!

The adults of Woodcroft work through the night, sorting and packing and readying, trying to let the younger children sleep.

By mid-morning the next day, the procession is in readiness, or as close as it will get.

About 80 able-bodied teens and adults are going, with about 70 younger children. There are half a dozen horses, and twice as many mules and donkeys. The mules are laden mostly with food and water. The men wear packs, as well, with their families' necessities. Tools, especially for woodworking and lumberjacking, are packed as well; weapons are carried.

At the near side of the wood are trails made by the Woodcrofters over the years. After a few miles, they will peter out.

Possibly important down the road -- are you bringing the smith's anvil? It would require a cart, which may be difficult, but replacing one is also difficult.

How do you want to arrange the troop? Note that most of the men and some of the women are capable hunters, and many carry bows as well as axes.

What's your plan? Those who would naturally lead the group are, inconveniently, staying behind, and have delegated to you. Look at the map. If you look at the large lake in the center of the Avistan (the northern continent), you're starting out more or less where the R in Razmiran is on the NE edge -- on the lakeshore at the edge of the forest that stretches north from Razmiran. Are you heading toward the center of the forest? Skirting the lakeshore? Striking northeast to get out of the forest just across the border?

Getting the train moving, fed, and secured, might even be thought of as, oh, let's call it a Challenge of Skill. I'm going to say that each day's travel (including the night's camp) is one skill challenge. Complexity of the challenge will increase as you get deeper into the wood. The primary skills for the early days are Nature, Perception, and Diplomacy. Please, once each, tell me what you're doing to help things along, and roll against a skill. A good justification could get a bonus. A skill other than those three can be used once/challenge with a decent justification, at a higher DC.

Male Elf Ranger 1

Teven informs the group of five that had been gathered the night before that he will leave troop arrangement to them and that he will be leavening three hours ahead of the caravan. His plan is to scout out a route for them to take for. He will do this for an hour to an hour and a half before turning back to join the caravan hopefully before or just after they depart. Further more he assures his new allies that should he see any thing that concerns him he will immediately turn around to warn them.He will somewhat reluctantly except up to two companions to join him as long as he believes they can move fast though the wild terrain and that they will not draw undo attention to the scouting party.

Essentially hes acting as a look ahead trying to find anything that might slow them down or endanger them. I'm rolling Perception because thats what I believe is needed for this as well as stealth because if theres anything out there like o a Ramirian army I don't want them to see me.

"An hour and a half is a long time to be running if you run into trouble. It's also a large gap to leave between you and the troupe if trouble comes in behind you. I suggest we send out scouts no more than 10 minutes in front of us. If you find trouble it still gives you time to get back to us and let us stop the caravan before we run into it. I'll also feel better knowing I can get you some assistance up front rather than worrying about finding your corpse an hour away because there was just one too many goblins" Khronos says to Teven, trying to make the last comment light hearted.

"My personal prefernce would be to have the children and pack mules in the centre of the collumn, with a strong group of able bodied defenders. This will be the slowest group and the weakest. We need to be able to defend them and keeping them in the centre prevents them panicking and scattering too easily."

"I'd also like to keep a group of three of our best hunters as a trailing rear guard, once again about ten minutes behind us. If they spot trouble behind us they can run forward to warn us and give us some time for preparation. While we travel, scouts fighters need to range forward and slightly off the trail. Their slower movement will be offset by the pace the children can keep and it gives us a ring of "outriders" as an early warning system for attack"

"I'll be moving back and forwards along the column, as much to keep myself busy as to keep moralle up. Many of these people are scared, so let's make sure talks of danger or trouble don't get to any of the more skittish folk"

Having stated the plan he was going over all night, the big half elf stood up from where he was crouching and looked at his 5 companions, giving each of them a confident smile. "Of course, this is only one plan and I'm sure there are many flaws to it. I'll happily bow to those more wise in combat tactics or movements of large groups of people. Desna's protection to us all"

I'll be wandering amongst the people most of the way, encouraging them and giving aid where I can to try and keep the pace up on this first day. Diplomacy 1d20+10 = [5,10] = (15). While I'm walking and talking, I'll also use the time to try and determine if there is any dissent or overwhelming depression starting to build that may derail us later down the track. Teven, please say how far in the lead you're going -- the hour+, or more like Khronos's suggestion. Ashavan, please try to remember to post with the avatar.

The leaders do a good job of keeping spirits up and people moving. The villagers seem to accept their leadership, not least due to the group's ability to respond to concerns in a calm and steady fashion, while still making progress.

There are of course delays -- an obstinate mule, minor first aid needs, and the like, but you have made what seems to be good progress as the light starts to dim and you make camp.

Tell me about your camp protocols. Teven, go ahead and roll a Nature while pitching camp; others can cooperate (i.e., aid another -- beat to 10 to add 2).

Teven replies to Khronos by saying "I do not know what path your life has taken you but I feel you do not understand the gravity of are situation. At present we believe we have a three day head start on the Ramirians and though I took every possible precaution to avoid detection when I defected we do not know if I was successful furthermore, and let it be said that I accuse no one of this and have no knowledge to confirm it, we do not know that there was not a spy planted here. Who at this very moment is not running back to his masters to warning them that I have alerted you to there advance."

Taking a moment of pause to let his words sink in Teven looks around at the preparations being made for there departure then looks back at Khronos and says. "If some how the Ramirians are able to get ahead of us and prepare an ambush we are doomed if we do not have time to divert the caravan and avoid the ambush all together. It is dangerous work I know this but it is not the first time I have done it nor gods willing will it be the last but for the sake of all those around us now its work that must be done.

Once his exchange with Khronos is over he departs to scout ahead of the caravan.

Once camp is set up, Varlis leads his family to bed and sleep. Then he will help arrange a series of watches so that every man and woman who volunteers gets the chance to do a watch.

With the good spirits of the camp, the half-elf should have little trouble finding willing guards. Afetr all, it is their lives and those of their families at stake.

He organises everyone into patrols of three and has two patrols per two hour watch per night. If the caravan sleeps for ten hours then that is 60 people doing a two hour watch every night.

Feel free to change his plan, he is a theorist not necessarily gifted with common sense. Since no one answered the question of the anvil, Varlis would have made sure it was brought. Mainly because that gives the infants somewhere to rest on the march.

Male Half Elf Paladin

As the caravan pulled up for the night, Khronos watched as Teven entered the camp. The Paladin breathed a sigh of relief at having the scout return safely. He was still concerned at the risk the man was taking, but would bow to his wisdom in this area. The knight had spent many years on the road with his master, but never as a scout.

He watched as the wizard began organising watches for the evening and volunteered his time somewhere in the latter part of the night, possibley the graveyard shift where endurance was importance to fight off fatigue while watching for danger.

After this he begins talking to families, suggesting locations to set their tents. The process is genrally chaotic but eventually he was hoping to arrange the group with the less able and those with young, in the middle of a protective ring of the more able and alert. Once again setting up camps of large groups is outside the purvew of the Paladin and he was hoping some of the others would throw ideas or modify this plan of his.

When the camp was settled the Paladin stepped forward and stated "Let us pray to Desna. Let us pray that our travels are blessed and this journey shall bring us a new and bright beginning, Free from the yoke of tyranny and oppression. Let us remember those who remained behind to give us this chance. Remember them in peace and harmony with their god, for she will be with them in whatever journeys they now face. Keep strong and have faith in those who travel with you for we will see you through this to the journeys end. Blessings of Desna to you all"

Stepping back, Khronos says his own private prayer for those who remained, hoping the end would be quick or by some miracle they should prevail. He felt uncomfortable leading the prayers but knew someone needed to, and his faith was strong. He returned to where the Jensens were setting their tent and checked their preparations, helping Jonas with the tent lines and keeping young Gron and Kira from under his feet.

yeah yeah, I know. Sorry I went all religious in there but hey....he's a Paladin, it's what they do. Any way my rolls. Nature roll for the assist. 1d20+1, [12,1] = (13) (woot, go the assist). Also, if it helps, Religion roll 1d20+5, [11,5] = (16), for his amazingly inspiring speach to the people. I'm happy to take any watch, but given my low light vision and high endurance sometime in the really hard part of the night would be better suited. I don't sleep in my armour btw, cos that leads to strange rashes and and tiredly grumpy Paladins wielding big axes. Cheers

Don't believe I got an answer to this.

The gathered crowd pays rapt attention to the paladin -- who is now, by default, the village priest. As he finishes his prayer, the villagers all murmur, "Blessings of Desna," and embrace their families and friends.

Jonas appreciates the help, and asks, when Gron and Kira are not in immediate earshot,

Spoiler:
"Khronos, my friend, do we have a chance? I mean, I know we did not have one in the village, but are we just prolonging our deaths?"

He organises everyone into patrols of three and has two patrols per two hour watch per night. If the caravan sleeps for ten hours then that is 60 people doing a two hour watch every night.

I get 30 == 3*2*5

Varlis has no difficulty at all recruiting volunteers, many of whom offer that they feel unlikely to be able to sleep that night in amny event.

Helsinia is kept quite busy tending blisters and, among the children, the usual array of upset stomaches and so forth. She volunteers to stay up on the first watch, not as a patroller, but continuing her work.

Donaar is also kept occupied in the early evening, helping with the patrols, making sure all have at least one skilled archer and one skilled axeman, and giving instructions. Feel free to elaborate

Teven:

Spoiler:
As you move about the camp, most people greet you with a friendly wave or nod or even a word of thanks, but about one in five of the adults seems distinctly chilly toward you.

Adar:

Spoiler:
Aerith comes up to you when he can do so discreetly. "Adar, I've been wanting to speak to you all day, but did not have an opportunity. I -- I don't want to die in the woods. And my parents . . ." His voice trails off.

Kaelynne:

Spoiler:
Kaelynne is trying to get her half-elven son ready for sleep, when Uriel asks, "Mommy? When are we going home?"

Two patrols of three for five watches sounds like 30 to me. Much better. Thanks DM. Int 16 is a tough cross to bear when you are me.

"Blessings of Desna to all" concurs the Larward family.

Varlis will take a dawn watch, then spend the breakfast at his books.

[ooc]Good point -- what watch or watches are y'all on? You need six hours of sleep or (for Kaelynne) four hours of trance.[/ooc[

Male Half Elf Paladin

I'll do one of the Patrols on the third watch, around midnight if I'm not mistaken

Khronos looks at Jonas and grins broadly before replying...

Spoiler:
"While ever we draw breath there is hope my friend. Desna believes in the power if luck and hope. We travel to remove the advantage that our enemy had. Now we may find a place that is better suited to our defense. The leader of the group following us may decide to stop, or come down with a disease, or die in an accident or at the hands of those who remain at the village. The false god himself may die, for he is no true divine being and is subject to the laws of nature just as the rest of us are. Yes Jonas, we have a chance, of that I am sure"

Don't believe I got an answer to this.

Teven would suggest that that the group move along the northeast of the forest for speed believing that the Ramirians are at there back and that they must move as fast as possible. He will how ever not object and will defer the decision to any of the groups leaders if thy feel that moving through center of the forest is preferred. He will however severely object to any thought of moving along the cost fearing that the Razmirians could use boats to get ahead of the group and ambush them.

DM

Spoiler:

Teven will ignore those who give him the cold shoulder leavening them alone understanding where the resentment is coming form. As for those that treat him well he will be friendly with them and take meals with them if it dose not they will have him at the table. While talking to people he will focus on the village he came from trying to avoid talking about the Razmirians or his time in the army. He will do his best to change the subject from Razmirians as often as possible while in casual conversation.

Male Half Elf Paladin

I'm happy enough to go along with the group's concensus. However it would be good to know a few things first

1. What is the composition of the force following us. If there's many cavallry then going along the edge of the forest means they can catch us quicker along the open ground. If they're mostly light foot and skirmshers then the forest provides no real protection and the edge is our best bet.

2. What do we know of the dangers of the forest. if they are too risk to the caravan then going through the centre is a no brainer

3. How readily available is water to supply 150 odd people? If we can't get regular supplies of water we're scuppered fromthe get go. If water is an issue then we have no choice but to follow the lake as at least it will provide this essential (and food tends tobe easier to gather near water). On the downside, the lake limits our escape options if they come upon us (but does give us the advantage of a denied flank so tey casn't surround us). Lakes also tend to hold nasty aquatic creatures with a preference for dragging their victims underwater.... and I wear plate armour.

So Pat, if these questions can be answered, it may give us some guidance as to how we should proceed. Cheers

She would point out that she's quite aware whilst in the trance so she can put herself somewhere where she can hear things other than the villagers to enter her trance. A second guard would be needed during that time to be on the safe side but all in all she's happy to sit in a good place to be a lookout all night.

In the early evening Kaelynne sits with the children, especially her son, trying to settle them so they'll sleep. A sad smile comes to her face at something Uriel says and she replies quietly in elven.

Spoiler:
"We're going to find a new home, a good home" She tells him certainly "But you get to sleep, dream of a new home, think on what you'd like for our new house and tell me in the morning, alright?"

1. Teven reports a small (dozen or so mounted) cavalry troop; mostly light infantry -- they're not expecting serious resistance.

2. In the near edge of the forest, just typical forest fauna, none of which are likely to bother a large group, though outriders need to beware of antagonizing wolves, bears, etc. As you get further in, there are stories of evil humanoids, particularly goblinoids. On the Ustalav side, all bets are off, as no one goes there under ordinary circumstance. If you believe the legends, you would expect undead of some sort.
3. Water is not a major problem. Streams are numerous, feeding into the lake.

Male Half Elf Paladin

"From what we know of the region then I agree with Teven's assessment of the situation. We need to follow the forest edge and get into Ustalev as soon as possible. They may send the light cavalry to try and harry us but we should manage that with the number of archers we have available to us." Khronos says to the other leaders that have gathered.

"What say the rest of you?"

Male Human Warlock - Star Pact

"Khronos, I too would suggest skirting the edge of the forest as much as possible. I do not wish to lose any villagers to the goblinoids within.

"As for watches... I can take the early watch. Sleep will be long in coming to me anyway."

Adar lingers towards the rear of the group, since there are many of the more vulnerable members of the community there - the children, and those elderly who were hale enough to accompany the group, with some few who ride in the sole wagon with the anvil. Adar studies the sky, wishing Desna would pass him some wisdom, but finds no solace in the stars today. The villagers who stayed behind would soon be dead.

For the DM

Spoiler:

When Aerith approaches him, Adar touches him briefly on the cheek, glances around briefly to ensure their exchange is private, and kisses him briefly.

"I'm sorry, Aerith. The evacuation has been taking so much of our time. Your father... both your parents... they wanted you to be safe. They would not have sent you with us if they thought you would die in the woods. Your father may not like me... may not like that we are together... but he knows I would use all my power to protect you."

Adar clasps Aerith's hand and brings it to his lips, kissing the young mans fingers, then looks deeply into Aerith's eyes. "We will make it through the wood... I have no intention of letting you die there. Be safe and don't be foolish. Leave the heroics to us."

Varlis listens to the others views. He shrugs at the question.
