Yeah, she knows she's going to be disgusting again in short order, so she really doesn't see the need.

Yuck. I don't understand what Hellard sees in her. I really don't.

Heh, for what it's worth, she doesn't know what he sees in her either, but she's not going to come down on him for it. She'll just let it be what it is. I imagine if and when she ever DOES clean up, she'll probably be the hottest thing he's ever seen. :D (No, never seen it.)

Darius makes his way to the watch house, keeping a keen eye out, the Street of the Gods is a dangerous section of the city. From the end of the block he sees some of the others standing outside the building. He hurries towards their position, keeping watch on the dark alleys and doorways.

Paladin, Hellard

Spoiler:
In one alleyway he spots the nobleman, Hellard, standing in the shadows watching the others. Darius's eyes linger on him for several seconds as he walks past, but he does not stop.

As he approaches the others, he calls out a greeting "Riven! Brother Thomas!" He also nods to the witch-woman as he draws near. "I hope I have not kept you waiting."

Spot Check (1d20+4=24) on Hellard.

Male Human

"Ahh welcome to the fun Lad! Are you prepared well enough for us to venture in?" Riven looks about at the rest assembled here, "We may be a man short, anyone seen the nobleman?"

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Hellard barely restrains an urge to saunter out and call "You rang?" Instead, he determines to wait and see if any ugly discussion ensues in his immediate absence. If not, he'll join them with an excuse about the idiocy of stableboys.

Perception check to be aware that Darius noticed him, opposed by Darius' Bluff to conceal the fact, I assume: roll 11 + 4 ranks +3 class skill -1 Wis = 17.

Oh. Well. Lemme look at 'em again -- may have to redo his skills. Thanks for the heads-up, Azoun. Paladin?

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Do whatever rules you like... but tell the story.

Male Human Expert 2, Human Paragon 1 ( OGL 3.5)

"Oh I expect he will turn up shortly." says Darius, unable to keep a completely straight face.

I will just say that Hellard's spot check is good enough that he knows Darius saw him. Darius was not really trying to hide that fact.

Brother Thomas pushes open the heavy oak door, reinforced with iron bindings. Its creaks with a long, low squeal, revealing a dusty waiting-room beyond. There are no lights within, but you can see the shapes of desks and paperwork past the counter.

"Easy, fellows. There can be nothing to worry about. After all, we've already vanquished the walking dead today... what else could go wrong?" The words have no echo in the old building, swallowed whole by the darkness. Suddenly aware of the cursed question he just asked, Brother Thomas grasps his silver sunburst symbol, and takes a single step over the threshold.

Nothing happens.

Male Human

Riven removes his Sword from the sheath and proceeds forward closely to Brother Thomas, "Step easy lads."

Male Human Expert 2, Human Paragon 1 ( OGL 3.5)

"Riven, wait." Darius says as the warrior steps towards the door. He pulls two small leather pouches from his satchel. Each pouch is tied to a leather thong.

"Wear this, it is a ghost bag. It should.. it, will protect you from the influence of evil spirits." Darius hands one ghost bag to Riven and places the other around his own neck.

Male Human

Riven nods to Darius as he takes the 'Spirit Bag' and places it around his neck, "Any protection will be welcome in this place I think." Riven continues into the complex along side Brother Thomas, his weapon ready.

Heh heh heh....[/maniacal laughter at trusting players]

Male Human Expert 2, Human Paragon 1 ( OGL 3.5)

Swallowing hard, Darius pushes down his anxiety. Then he draws his rapier and follows the others into the abandoned watch house.

The old Watch Post creaks slightly in the rain. Something about this place doesn't feel right. There are no cobwebs, but dust abounds.

An hour's work searches the place thoroughly. There is nothing out of the ordinary to be seen, heard, or felt. In fact, despite its odd feeling, the place merely seems deserted.

The ground floor consists of the waiting-room and workroom (desks and piles of mouldering paperwork), and a staircase leading down to the armoury and up to the office and station-house. There are six small stone cells at the rear, off a passageway Also in this passageway, a staircase leads down to the dungeon area.

The basement contains the Watch Post's (now empty) armoury, and more storage-space for files. In addition, there is a small dungeon here, with a tiny (4"x6") barred window leading to a gutter outside. It could fit perhaps eight prisoners, none comfortably. The two basement areas are in fact separated- you cannot get from the dungeon to the armoury without going up to the ground floor first then going down the other set of stairs.

On the next floor up are bunk-rooms, along with a small (again, empty) kitchen and pantry, plus a pair of washrooms. There is also an office overlooking the street, for the commander of the post.

Something still doesn't feel right here, but there are no obvious threats.

I will post a map later, but I've got to go to work right now.

Male Human Ranger 4

At the end of an hour of exploration, you come downstairs to find the nobleman, Hellard, drinking from a flagon and yawning. "The neighborhood seems clear, if a bit shabby. No gangs of assassins are holed up in any of the neighboring buildings, unless they're wererats in animal form -- or perhaps they've all been polymorphed by the lady here? The basement of this place contains no monsters, prisoners, or secret trapdoors leading to extensive dungeons that I could find. In fact, I find no secret doors, passages, or other means of secret ingress or egress in the exterior walls or on the ground floor. I did find a speck of dust on my cravat, though. Deucedly annoying, that!"

Brother Thomas huffs, clearly not impressed with the young nobleman's cavalier attitude to punctuality and teamwork.

"There doesn't seem to be anything wrong... we'd best get settled in as quickly as possible, so we can begin work tomorrow morning."

Male Human

Riven looks about the musty room, "And what 'work' are we to start tomorrow?" Riven looks to Brother Thomas, "What I mean is, what is the next step?"

Male Human Expert 2, Human Paragon 1 ( OGL 3.5)

"How can we trace the undead back to who or whatever caused them to rise from their graves?" asks Darius

"Well," says Zelluyan, taking a seat. "What we have to do is get a fire started, because it is very cold. (in an aside to whoever goes and starts a fire in the fireplace)Thankyou. It does an old man's bones good to stay warm in weather like this. Now, where was I?
"Oh yes, well, I think this is related to the specific astral convergence, as I was saying earlier. The seventh northward equinox of Burdara from the third celestial conjunction of Kilburn... or something like that?"
He looks to Brother Thomas for confirmation, who gives him a quick nod.
"On this day, the gates between the living and the dead weaken, and will worsen for the next, hm, um (he's counting on his fingers), thirty-seven days. But someone has broken down the gate, and that means that this will only get worse each day until the barriers are totally shattered. We must shut the walls again, before something much more dangerous than animated corpses emerges. And to do that, we need the Globe of Elwar to close it again... and I haven't heard of one of those surfacing outside of the Southern Desert Cities for centuries."

Male Human Ranger 4

"Godsblood!" swears the noble, "it must take more than thirty-seven days to reach the Southern Cities, much less the time to find one of these gewgaws of which you speak. Therefore, I assume we're to stay here, fighting zombies, for the next month-and-a-week, and then travel south?" He seems more bothered by the news than by Brother Thomas' glare, which seems to impress him not at all.

"For a certainty, my dear departed mother never envisioned this for her son's life! Or didst thou have something else in mind, Master?"

Male Human

Riven's face shows signs of confusion, "Elwar's Globe? Surfacing?" He turns and looks at the rest of the group, "So we need to go to a dessert and wait for some 'Globe' to surface?"

Male Human Ranger 4

"Desert," drawls the noble. "A dessert is no further than Kandive's Pastry Shop on Brookven Street."

"Ooh. certainly, no. Well, I haven't heard of one of Elwar's Globes surf... being found, in centuries outside the Southern Cities, but you fellows may be able to be more persuasive than I am. Perhaps you could ask around, see if anyone's got one they could spare?" Says Master Zelluyan.
"Otherwise, we could see some very interesting specimens.." His eyes light up slightly at the prospect of having new types of undead to catalogue, categorize, and study.

Male Human Expert 2, Human Paragon 1 ( OGL 3.5)

"Is there any way we could make one of these globes ourselves?" asks Darius. "Or something that could be used in it's stead?"

The another thought strikes Darius, "Master Zelluyan, how would someone break down the walls of the Underworld, would they need one of these Globes to do that?"

Male Human

"Master Zelluyan, you make it sounds as if one could just go to a local trader and purchase one?"

Male Human Ranger 4

"Heh. If I happen to have one around as a paperweight, I should be glad to donate it."

"Hmf? Humf? Buy one? Paperweight? Oh, dear," he slaps his knee and grins.
"If only it were that easy. Wha-? Open the gates? Well, I suppose someone who has one of the Orbs might, conceivably, do that, too. Though, unless one were a trained academic like myself, that would be an altogether, well, dangerous proposition. No, I think that perhaps the best thing to do might be to hit the streets and find out who might have one, or ways to get one. Then, I can see if perhaps my scholarly credentials might open a door, and secure the loan of one. It, er, might cost us a scholarly observer- this kind of ritual hasn't been performed in, well, goodness knows how long!"
Yes, it's coming together now. Think Elminster, with the dialogue of The Professor from Futurama, as voiced by Winnie the Pooh. Yes, now we have Zelluyan fully fleshed out as an NPC!

Male Human

"Well Master Zulleyan, to whom should we begin asking if they have one of these orbs? Should we start with the temples? Jewellers?" Riven looks to the noble, "Or perhaps we are to just walk the streets and shout for the Orb and hope someone comes forward with one or the location of one?"

"Um. Hmh. Perhaps we should, um, have dinner and a snooze, followed by some vigorous investigation?"

Yes, definitely voiced by Winnie the Pooh.

Male Human Ranger 4

"Had not Breyr disappeared, meseems that his, ah, less savory contacts might have been of great help here. Without his aid, we're faced with a challenge. Luckily, Darius here seems like an exceptional lad, and one with a penchant for toys himself! I recommend we give the lad free license to follow his nose -- with you, Riven, accompanying him as bodyguard, so that he need have no fear of any places his nose might take him!

"Hague's bravery is without equal, and the lady here (motioning the apparently catatonic Lily) apparently has certain... senses of her own. Perhaps those two could search separately, to the same end.

"For my part, it might be best for me to go alone. I intend to check in with some of the Quality who deal in antiquities; such are loathe to relinquish their toys, but perhaps I can leverage some sort of family favor for it.

"Brother Thomas, all this is, of course, subject to your approval. My thought, however, was that while we are thus occupied, you would have a chance to check in at the temples, and see if any lead can be obtained thereby."

Male Human

"Do you think it wise for us to seperate as such?" Riven looks at the others, "Sure we have proved our mettle in combat, but if another amount of such dead are to awaken...if not for Brother Thomas, Darius and I could surely of perished. I'm as skilled with the blade as any trained warrior if not more, but I do suffer from the human affliction of Endurance which the dead do not suffer."

Male Human Ranger 4

For once, you seem to see something beneath the noble's usual air of amused contempt... Riven's comment has clearly brought the possibility of his own mortality home to him. With an effort, he shrugs it off and says, bravely, "True enough. And with Breyr and Hague and the lady still unaccounted for, there are few enough of us to carry the fight. But in dealing with certain members of the Quality, I cannot be seen to be interacting with peasants as if they were equals; such would undo any chance of obtaining what we seek, should one of them remark on it. Nor would I act as if you were my servants -- not after the blood we shed together this afternoon."

Male Human

"Where is it you must go to speak with these members? If it is a stately place, such as parlament, could the rest of us not simple wait in a waiting room? This would keep us together, without seperating us too badly. My other worry about us seperating is if what if one group gets too close to 'something'...at what point would we venture forth to find the others?" Riven looks about at the party, "I am just trying to push the real issue. There was a Hell Squad before. They could've just stumbled across their demise or they could have been targeted. I don't know the details of their demise, though I would think if we are united we can at least retreat or win the battle ahead!"

Liberty's Edge

Human

"I would be happy to accompany Hellard, if need be. Though my family holdings are dispersed, I was still born to Quality, and know how to conduct myself."
"In addition, my vocation affords me a certain immunity to the class system. No-one would object to him associating with a clergyman, I believe. Especially one whose vows of humility cause him to keep a low profile <grin>. When the mouth is shut, the eyes and ears can be fully open."

Master Zelluyan looks around and notices Darius.
"Oh dear me, it seems like the young boy has dozed off already. Perhaps you should all get some rest, you might need it in the morning."

From the distance, you can hear the ritual chanting from the Temple of the Brothers of Peace just three doors down, interrupted by the ritual screaming and haranguing from the Temple of The Crimson Anger next door to it. For Refuge, it's almost peaceful. The fire is crackling, the storm seems to have played itself out for a while, and the evening is (yawn) slightly dozy.

Liberty's Edge

Human

"Well, until the others show up, I suggest we be doubly vigilant in our watches. I'll take first shift, since I need a clear head in the morning."

"And if anyone is concerned about the safety of splitting up, to gather leads, then we should visit deVere and request some of those troops."

Male Human Ranger 4

"Brother Thomas, permit me to share your watch. We can wake the others after 5 hours, enjoy a like nap ourselves, and have everyone in reasonable shape come morning. But no fewer than two of us should be on guard at any given time, and extra paid guardsmen will be of little help, I think: at least one of them was a zombie, last time we met! With the others here, we could all have gotten a few more hours of rest, but such is the life of a member of the Hell Squad, or so it would seem.

"By the way, Thomas, your company in visiting the Quality tomorrow will be a great boon; perhaps you'll recognize the trinket we seek if we see it in a collection, whereas I would be operating blind -- and therefore at quite the disadvantage. Riven, much as your sword would be needed should zombies ambush us en route, within the dwellings of the privileged you would be insulted or worse, and Darius might even be pressed into slavery or perfumed up as a catamite -- any number of other unpleasant possibilities come to mind.

"Nor can I go to many of the places that you and Darius would fit right into -- places where leads of, well, an 'alternative vendor' might be sought. Should the others turn up, by all means they should stick with you two, for added assistance. Brother Thomas and I shall have to take our chances... and there's no telling which group will have the harder time of things!"

The first watch passes quietly. After a few more hours, the rhythmic patter of heavy rain comes again, but your sleep is troubled little, except when the Brothers of the Temple of Crimson Anger take offence at some distant heresy against their faith, and begin screaming invective and insult for an hour or so.

Something about the old Watch Post doesn't feel quite right, and for those who sleep, it comes fitfully and with odd, disturbing dreams which can't quite be remembered and leave a lingering dread and a touch of cool sweat.

However, dawn forces its way through the sodden shutters a good hour after Refuge comes alive- the bakers, market-dwellers, and body-collectors start work early, and the creak of their wagons and cries of their trade can be heard even through the doors.

Male

Detective-Corporal Malcolm Darr was, in short, unimpressed by this turn of events. He brushed some hair out of his eyes and tipped his hat back a little further to survey the building a little more clearly. The old Hell Squad building felt unusual and more then a little uninviting. Not for the first time, he wondered whether it had been such a wise idea to not only accuse High Brother Vasle of being a part of a snake cult, but to prove that he was in fact leading them. The case had taken months and had included work trudging through the city of Refuge's notorious sewers. He hadn't expected this position to be his reward.

Malcolm sighed, honest work in Refuge only seemed to get him further into strife with someone up high. Admittedly, getting him assigned the the Hell Squad had been ingenious. From the outside, it almost looked like a promotion. From the inside, he realised someone was just hoping this squad would disappear as well, taking him with it. Malcolm smiled a lopsided grin, 'oh well, I'll just have to beat the odds again...' he thought to himself as he walked across the road to the posting. Pausing a moment, he raps loudly on the door, then takes a few steps back.

Male Human

Hearing the 'rapping' on the door Riven turns to Darius, "Lad wake the others, i'll get the door. Riven approaches the door, loosening his limbs...who knows what could be at the door, maybe the dead knock? Assured his armor is in place and his weapon is easily drawn Riven opens the door, momentarily shocked the man standing in front of him is alive but glad at the same time, "May I help you?"

Male

Malcolm smiled amicably at the stranger. He had been briefed the evening before on the other members. This man seemed too old to be Darius, too young to be Brother Thomas and not dressed in the way of a noble. He didn't smell like the sewers, and he doubted that his bulky frame would suit that of a career thief turned guard member. Lastly, he didn't look to be of the fair gender, although he had been surprised by that before...no, the look of the north was too obvious. This must be Riven, Malcolm thought to himself. The Watch-Captain, DeVere, had implied that Riven's guarding background had been shadowed by some dark deed but had deliberately withheld the information. Malcolm had replied sarcastically, implying that any guard that risked being honest in this city seemed to have identical shadows.

"Riven Golarsson, I presume? My name is Detective-Corporal Malcolm Darr. I've been re-assigned to the newly formed Hell Squad. I am in the right place, aren't I?"

Male Human

Looking at the stranger suspiciously, "Does this mean the Captian does not trust his newest team? After the speech he gave us last evening I would assume you to be a spy for the man." Riven sighs as he opens the door for Malcom, "But I have no time for spies of any sort and will trust in Brother Thomas's decision. Please won't you come in."

(OOC: Just as a reminder I will be off to Gen Con UK tomorrow, i'll be back on Saturday evening.)

Male

"No spy sir, just a guard simply being transferred from another department. Where is Brother Thomas? I would like very much to meet him."

Malcolm felt a chill creep down his spine as he crossed the threshold. He glanced around the room, taking in the dust and the cobwebs quickly. It felt as if the room were waiting for something; something violent. Malcolm pushed the thought aside. 'You've been in the guard too long Malcolm, the paranoia must be getting to you when a stationary building starts to bother you', he thought to himself.

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

"Why, sink me!" exclaims a big young man descending the stairs, who wears the dress and careless manner of a noble... but also the swords and sense of toughness of a warrior. "Another guardsman... one would almost be tempted think we were in a watch post!" Then, after a brief inspection, "At least this one is well-groomed. I'd sell my ancestral estate for your hair!"
(assuming your character resembles his avatar!)

Male Human Expert 2, Human Paragon 1 ( OGL 3.5)

Darius returns from waking Brother Thomas and Master Zelluyan. "The others are awake Riven. What is going on?" he asks as he peers at the newcomer. Darius notices that his guard uniform does not appear to be brand new, like the rest of theirs. "Have they sent us more Gaurdsmen to staff this place?"

Since Darius is not wearing his cloak inside, the others may notice a bronze captain's badge clipped onto his belt near the flintlock pistol.
