Unfortunately D&D has always been filled with "bright line" character advancement. Heck the very foundation of the game is the level where you cross a threshold and suddenly improve in nearly every aspect.

Prior editions have spread out the changes better, however, rather than tying nearly all of them to 11th or 21st level. If a party goes to 21st, suddenly everyone's doing a lot more damage (even with their basic attack), is harder to raise, and various other details.

Would it have hurt to spread those items out, so that the changes in the universe were less jarring? I don't think it would have.

All of the feats, powers and abilities that scale at each tier do so by one increment (1W becomes 2W, 2d6 becomes 3d6, etc.).

I am not sure how you could make the increase any more gradual.

It's 4e, dude. You'll never die in the first place.

Come play in my 4e game and see how long you last... I'm sorry but this is obviously a comment made by someone who has not given any time to the system. Now there may be good reasons why you don’t wish to give time to the system if that is the case i recommend not making comments like this

By not putting all of them at 11th or 21st, which is what I said in the post in the first place. Put some of the bumps at 16th, some at 18th, etc. - make the change in the universe gradual, rather than all at once.

Ok. I could see why that would be desirable but I do not see a way to make it work. There is no way to predict how many scalable options any given PC will have. It also weakens the nature of the tiered approach. The transition from one tier to the next is meant to represent a major turning point in the development of a character.

Plus, by making many upgrades occur at the same level, you lower the work required to keep track of it all. When you hit 11 and 21, you know to go back and re-examine any feats/powers you have to see if they've upgraded on you. But if stuff upgraded at seemingly random moments spread throughout all 30 levels, you'd almost surely be missing a few upgrades at any given point.

Cheers! :)

I thought this thread would be all about how there is no more Lawful Evil.

I miss Lawful Evil.

Did you read the forum rules? Guess not.

I overheard at my FLGS that at 20th level I can resurrect myself once per day. Can someone with the new books tell me if this can happen? Thanks.

I overheard at my FLGS that they were going to force all staff at gamestores to wear a tabard, with the slogan;

"I don't actually have a secret hotline to any games publishers; I don't 'hang out' or 'chill' with any creators, I haven't read most of the products I sell, let alone played them all, and you really shouldn't quote me on anything".

Apologies to the minority of staff who do know what they're talking about.

Ha! Soooooooo True!

Lawful Evil is still there. It's just called "Evil" now. Read the description.

We could always do like they did for Vomit Guy and start a candle-lighting thread for Lawful Evil.

My first post ever..and so my first post to what it seems a very good D&D discussion place!

I read the rule books for player,DM and monster so far...
Yes D&D has changed...wtf...changed is an understatement! =)
It was freaking mutated beyond regognition...but hell it is fun still!

One thing is common too the 4th edition...easy to use and very easy to get a choice done.

I mean...I have always made these dreadnaught multiclassed heroes and it was like hell. I went through charts (this level he will get that class and that skill and by then he will upgrade this ability score and so on) It took lot of skill and time to create a hero!

Now. U have less to worry about! Skills are like gonne..u only choose trained in the start...and u can place ur ability points easier with less worry. U only need to give a quick look through the chart for the feats cause u get half ur level as a modifier boost to everything...AC,SV,ability =)

And also they are the tiers...which are important..cause ur hero gets an ability+ to all stats and most of ur powers/spells get upgraded!

It is like pressing a button...and puff =p

So I understand why they make so much fuss about tiers.

Also now ur powers are less than they used to be...
u do not have a million spells, nor a million moves to do.
U have like only some of them, and must make strategic use of them=)
Also u need to team up...notice the warlord par example? All about teamplay! U see...Warlord with rogues to get them into positions =)
And already have like so many others strategies to ge for!
(but thats another post if u are not bothered to discuss team party...=)

What I am more concerned with is:
1st) the economy system which sucks...
2nd) the lack of bad guys...sigh...
Par example...I was a DM for an evil group...and the group had bought a house and then the cleric made zombies and skeletons, snatched people in the night and so on...
where is animate dead? Construction rituals?
I guess later...like the barbarian and the druid...I guess!

DAMNNN....my post was BIG ASS

now...where do I get these pics u all have?

I want a paladin if anyone has! =p

And sorry for the size...first post...carried away

Click My Account in the fine print at the top of this page. Then click Messageboard Settings (and I think Avatar Name will also work) and you'll find them. But there are a lot to choose from -- pages and pages.

Of course, mine is a personal photo :)

And welcome aboard!

found this guy....
he does not look good and valiant though..but he is armoured enough...=)
