What happened to the dots?

I used to see dots next to threads I had posted in, but know I don't is this sometihng on my end or Paizo's? What happened to my poor little dots?

Due to issues with the Paizo database and serves, Gary has Temporarily suspended the dots. They should be back sometime next week.

Turns out the way I implemented the dots wasn't the best way to do it. Caused a bunch of unnecessary load on the servers.

I have a better idea about how to do it but am unsure when I'll be able to get to it. Until then, the dots may be on hiatus. (I say "may" because I haven't decided yet if their departure is 100 percent necessary when we're not doing the database manipulations we've been doing the past couple days which led to their absence.)

*sniff* I miss the little black dots. They were my friends. The best of friends. They laughed with me when I was happy and comforted me when I was sad. You'll bring my little friends back soon won't you? *sniffle* Please?

I am so glad to be rid of those dots. I’ve tried creams, lotions, antibiotics, nothing worked. People were starting to talk; I got them from a toilet seat, I swear!

"Who's agitating my dots?"

Love that commercial!

*sniff* Poor little black dots. Exiled, alone, in some forgotten corner of the digital closet. *sniff*

I'm glad I saw this. I switched ti Vista and I thought the dots no longer appeared because of the system switch.

I too hope the dots return soon.

I loved the dots, expecally for PbPs threads, as I was able to see at a glance which of "my" games had new posts in them. I was really sad to see them go.

Perhaps we can "mark" threads as dot-threads ourselves. That way, the history of the threads does not need to be skimmed, and the users gain control over which threads they are interested in, and which they are not, even if they posted in them.

MORE DOTS! MORE DOTS!

I am all too familiar with that term, being the player of a level 52 warlock.

Yeah, I liked the dots too.

Don't nuke me for this, but what game is that, Warcraft? Is the VOIP interaction really that good?

Yes, and most people use either Vent (Ventrillo) or TS (TeamSpeak) for in game communication (not unusual to have 50+ people in a channel, though usually they get subdivided pretty quick). I prefer to type (it's quicker than talking and I hate the sound of my voice digitized), but hearing the accents is always interesting, plus most people can't type and play at the same time to save their lives.

Though I can not speak to your hatred of your voice..;-), I can't see how typing is faster the Voice Chat?...

Dragnmoon wrote:

You've never watched me type. ;) I can carry three to five conversations via text chat in the time it takes me to communicate one thought verbally to an individual. The amusing part is, I’m useless if I have to stop and think about it. Can’t do it, have to look at the keyboard. If I just let it “flow,” it works flawlessly. I have the same issue with passwords, combinations, and my badge at work. If I stop to think about it, bam, gone. That "home row" bs they force on you in school? S…l….o….w….

<=====Doesn't play computer RPGs. 1st person shooting only.

So, WTF is this:

Strangely, it's hilarious even though I don't know what the hell he's talking about.

<==== 80+ words/minute without acronyms.

Dragnmoon wrote:

In game, it's not that it's faster that matters. It's that if someone doesn't understand what you say it's gone. If you type it they can read it.

I only use voice when I'm shooting. Usually I type.

More Dots, only I want them to be pink if possible. I think we should make them look like the Dot candy! I did find the dot recognition system to be particularly helpful and I fully endorse their support and return. They get my vote!

Dot me!

Why are you the last knight left? What happened to the others?

The dots are currently on hiatus. When they come back, they'll indicate threads you've recently posted to.

Liberty's Edge

When will they get back!?!? I so randomly post in threads it's hard to recall which one's i'm in...it's killing me and eating up so much time when I sneak a chance to the site while at work. :(

The only way I've found to deal with this is go to my own recent posts and hit every thread I've posted to to find out if there's anything new....

those dots were my way to know what threads i had seen something woth going back to read again now i am just lost. like i know i seen on the boards where someone had created a calander for the Pathfinder world but alas i cannot find it now now matter how i search

The original implementation of the dots depended on some assumptions on my part that turned out to be kinda foolish. I'm not saying I picked the worst way in the world to implement the dots, but it was pretty bad, what with unintended consequences and the like.

(I have since spent some of my spare time imagining the worst way in the world to get the dots, and have decided that my original plan wasn't quite as bad as I could have made it. So yay for not being as stupid as I could have been! Or something.)

I have figured out an excellent way to implement the dots, which unfortunately is too small to include in the margins of this post. The dots shall return soon. Oh yes, there will be dots.

(Unless of course the new solution sucks terribly in some unanticipated way, in which case there will be dots for an extremely short period of time.)

Better to have dotted and lost, than never to have dotted at all.

It is a far,far better dot I do today, than I have ever dotted before.

One small dot for man, one giant dot for mankind.

If at first you don't dot; dot, dot again.

It was love at first dot.

These -are- the dots you are looking for.

Best dot ever. Period.

Dots. Ayup.

And just for good measure: [ooc]The smurfs shall return soon. Oh yes, there will be smurfs.

What can I say, its 2am here.

Just noticed that myself.

We'll miss you Mike, but your departure has apparently allowed the lowly dots back from Exile.

The dots improved a bit during their hiatus. Previously, they indicated threads in which you've posted in the past two pages. Now, they indicate threads in which you've posted within the most recent hundred posts (close but not the same as "past two pages"), or threads in which you've posted in the past two weeks.

So, more dots for everybody!

They went the way of the gentleman (actually, it's my last name, my brother and I are the only remaining male Knights, and he is older than me, so I am the last knight, at least until one of us pops out a male child or our daughters decide when they get married to keep their names)

did you mean my life is now complete?
