1. I can't believe this thread made it to page 3.

2. Don't urinate on jellyfish stings. It causes them to discharge more nematocysts, and it makes giving you an ambulance ride really unpleasant. :)

That might be because you have only ever posted here a single time. Stay a while. Get to know people. You might make friends.

I’m going to have to disagree with this one as well. I’m assuming your posting under an alias, unless you are just finally moving out of lurk mode, either one of which is fine, but honestly, a lot of these people have been really kind to me without ever having met me.

Thinking they are just names on a message board is how you get into trouble on the internet. Every single name (including the employees) is a real person, at home or work with thoughts and feelings and beliefs and opinions that, quite frankly are often totally contradictory to your own.

Do I like everyone? No, but I respect everyone (including you Dingo, even if I think you are off your rocker ;) ) and I expect to be treated in kind. I have a strict “never meet with people from the internet” rule, but honestly, a lot of the friends (yes, friends) I have made here are people I would seriously consider just hanging out with. We’re not close enough to do the knuckle punch “Sup bish?” routine, but that doesn’t diminish the bond.

Something else to keep in mind: Yes, this message board is here to support a brand, but think about it for a moment. These boards are here, free to use, with limited to no advertising, very light moderation, fantastic technical support above and beyond, and attentive genuine developer feedback. Name another one, anywhere, that has that, and I’ll personally mail you $10 via paypal.

No, really. You're creating a community to gain feedback on a game system. That's what you're doing. Politeness can kiss my ass if being impolite makes a better game system. Really, what are you trying to do? MAKE A BETTER GAME. Who gives a crap if you're polite in doing it?

I would much rather Paizo yank D&D3.5E from the depths of despair and make it a coherent role-playing game system than worry about who's being nice to whom. The former is a worthwhile goal; on the Internet the latter is pointless.

What are we after in the end? A good game. Who cares how we get there? So a few babies get smacked, a couple of lamerz get dissed, a handful of feelings are hurt. Is this really important in the grand scheme?

Dude, make a good game. If that means listening to Frank, so be it. If that means banning him, so be it. But don't do either in the name of hurt feelings, for heaven's sakes. Nobody thinks a game sucks or doesn't suck because someone's feelings are hurt in the process.

Paizo, you're not my friend. You're a company. The people on this board aren't my friends; they're digits. Paizo, make a good game, and do what you must to make a good game.

I have prayed for people on these boards. I have offered advice and hope during divorces and said prayer for people's illnesses to get better. I have vented my own personal demons on these boards and been given support in return.
I may never meet some of these people but some are better friends than I have ever had.

Really. When you're to the point where you've got a product that does what it's supposed to do, and that is then being discussed, then a community can be created, but using lacking kindness as an excuse to ban folks from a game design discussion leads to space hamsters and wolves-in-sheep-clothing and Player's Options books and thinking multiclassed sorcerers are A-okay.

The game needs to be better. I'm okay with hurt feelings if the product develops because of it. What would you rather have, an angry coversation on the Internet for a day and a half or the best version of D&D?

ROBERT HARRIS 22 wrote:
Paizo, you're not my friend. You're a company. The people on this board aren't my friends; they're digits.

I have friends on Paizo. I've shaken hands with Paizonians and traded gifts. I joined a writing group that takes up most of my free time because of Paizo. In September, Paizo and I are expecting our first child together.

These people are not just digits. Digits are digits.

Charlton Heston screams: "Posters are people! They're PEOPLE!"

I don't know if that's in wikipedia but I'm quite certain it's a fact. To say otherwise is to look for a dehumanizing rationalization for one's own inability to win debates by simply making good points and leaving it at that. Capping one's points with over the top insults can either be funny or detrimental, depending on whether or not you were smiling through your words. It's a fine line. I just avoid it altogether because I have big feet.

To me, the feeling of posters... even those who I find sometimes troublesome, adversarial, or just mildly contrarian, really do matter. I respect all people, and do my best to be civil until someone gives me a solid reason to be otherwise.

Paizo.com is one of the best places to be on the net because enough of us feel the same way. We have constructed our own reality and we like it just fine.

If you really want me to be a digit though. I choose middle finger. See? Kinda insulting but humor acts as my net. ;) jk btw, I choose pinky so I can hold myself up and act haughty while sipping. Oo, look at me! Chichi. Ain't I fancy?!

I disagree. The strong community on these boards it one of its greatest strengths, and in my opinion the greatest reason for such an undertaking to be done here. The game itself creates community, and if one ignores this during the game's design the final product will likely fail to meet the expectations of that community.

In my opinion, this is one of the major flaws with 4E; WotC seems to have lost touch with the community it created, either on accident or by design, and is approaching the development of their product in the same method you describe. In most cases, product development may not have anything directly to do with making friends, but in this industry community is what every thing's all about.

It's true that we're working to help create a great game, but everyone needs to realize that there's a difference between constructive and destructive criticism. One can point out mistakes and errors, and offer differing points of view and opinion, without resorting to personal attacks and rude behavior. Use of constructive criticism can only make the game stronger; destructive criticism can only make it weaker.

Sounds like you're operating under the assumption that in order to make the game better, we have to have a contentious discussion about the game. I think that's a false assumption.

I've used this saying before and I'll use it again: you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar. You can have great ideas, but if your demeanor and presentation turn people off, they won't listen. Maybe that's not how things should be in a world where logic rules supreme and people are judged solely on the strength of their ideas and not their attitude while presenting those ideas to their peers. However, we don't live in that world.

Man is a feel-good creature. When you make people feel bad, they don't want to be around you or listen to you. The people you end up attracting are people like yourself that don't care about the touchy-feely stuff, just the meat. [By the way, I'm using "you," "your," etc. in the generic sense; I'm not referring to you specifically.]

For example, I personally don't see that using foul language is really necessary to any discussion we've had or will have about Pathfinder. Now don't get me wrong, when I was younger (say from 13 to about 25), I could and would cuss a blue-streak about a mile wide. As I've gotten older and other changes in my life occurred, I've come to realize that it's a waste of breath in most cases. I tend to just skip over posts with much swearing If people want to swear, that's their choice, but I neither have to read no give any weight or credibility to their posts or ideas. That's just my choice. I certainly don't demand that posters only use the language I prefer, but I've come to realize that Paizo has been wise enough to know that creating a friendly environment where people feel welcome and "at home" helps them sell products. It's a business decision, and a very smart one.
