Need help with Tammeraut's Fate plot issue

Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

I've been wanting to run "Tammeraut's Fate" ever since I first read it, several years ago, and now I'm finally going to get my chance! Yay!

So I've been reading over the adventure, and it suddenly hits me:

(spoiler warning)

Why on earth don't the survivors not RUSH to the pier and jump on the ferry as soon as it arrives with the PCs? The adventure says something about, "they're in shock from the terror of the night before" - but as soon as the PCs arrive, the big plan is to survive until the ferry comes back!

I know a lot of people have played this, and I've searched the archives and not found a single negative comment, but my players can be really critical about little plot inconsistencies, so I want to make sure I pull this off smoothly.

So far, the best I can come up with is: a) the survivors are alive, but hurt badly (unconscious), or b) they try to run for the pier, and get attacked by something along the way (rats? snakes? giant perytons?)

Any comments/suggestions welcomed.

Thanks!

It's been forever since I developed this one... but my thinking was this: The survivors consist of 3 people, two of whom are sick (if I remember correctly) and probably in no real condition to come running out. They're also hidden away in a remote part of the island, and have barricaded themselves into their room. When the PCs finally get to them, they should be in BAD shape; certainly not in any shape to brave the monsters on the island to come running down to the pier for help.

Dang. Wish I could find a copy of #106 to confirm all of this half-remembered logic...

EDIT: HA! Found it! Right. They're locked into the cellar with a single narrow crack in the wall that looks out to the south, whereas the ferry approach to the island is from the north. With the sound of the surf crashing below their only window, there's no way they'd hear the arrival of the PCs at the pier a few hundred feet to the north. This, combined with the fact that two are deathly sick and on their last trip outside one of them was killed by a monster = plenty of reason to remain hidden and quiet.

Actually james your half remembered logic is spot on if I am remembering right from both reading and having played through it the only survivors are hiding inside as well as there being quite a few monster between them and the pier

Thanks!

I think the key point I was missing was the need to stress the degree of injury and sickness - in addition to terror - effecting the 3 survivors.

Plus, one guy DID run out and ring the bell to tell the ferry there were survivors. And he was then murdered by the peryton in the belfry.

And don't forget, it's basically a horror-movie style adventure, and in most horror movies the plot doesn't work unless people are really bone-head stupid to begin with. So it's probably just a weakness in the ability of the writer. Wait...which adventure are we talking about? DANGIT!

Did I mention I stole the entire thing wholesale from some guy named Pett. See he was drunk in a gutter and had a laptop and a trained monkey there with him...oh nevermind, it's a long story.

the monkey went on to form his own company, can't recall the name but it was my big sisters adventures or something

Storopers at the ready, tentacles primed, cigar shaped monstrosities - charge!

And at the last, unleash the gas spore blackgard cavalry...

Can't we have some more 'gas spore only' adventures?
