Any recommendations for places to go for good object pictures or any techniques? I've been wanting to create a lot of my own maps recently, like Scarwall or Catacombs of Wrath, but after seeing the quality of your own work I find it hard to accept anything less for my own. :)

Scarab Sages

Misgivings level 1 is finally done!

I've uploaded 3 versions:
1) A cropped copy of just the interior of level 1, without the surrounding lands. This is at full 200 dpi resolution.
Misgivings 1, 200dpi, cropped

2) A reduced resolution (100dpi) version of the whole area plus the 1st level.
Misgivings 1, 100dpi, full

3) A full 200 dpi version of the entire area (warning, 8000x5000 pixels, 10 MB JPG) - I couldn't get Coppermine gallery to process a file this big, so I included a direct link to it in #2's description, above.

These renders include full interior lighting and rain effects. I can render out versions without the light or rain, and with grids if folks need - though grids should be easy for anyone to do if they have GIMP or Photoshop.

Well, for objects, I use many from the Dundjinni forums, but I also render some of my own using 3D apps. Sketchup is actually pretty quick and easy. Some I hand-draw. Basically, I've been building a library of objects and textures for a while now. I can say that Photoshop skills are absolutely essential for me. Misgivings was about 90% photoshop, and I experimented a lot with patterns, brushes, and filters.

But that's just me. I know several cartographers that are Dundjinni purists, and some swear to CC3 or even hand-drawn. Find what works for you!

I've used Dundjinni to produce my maps with a little bit of Photoshop at the end (nothing like Tintagel does). I have also used the Dundjinni forums as a place to find objects, it is excellent, and also has some links to some other great sites.

Not bad Tintagel...

Who am I kidding, well done its great. The only problem with your maps are they spoil my players and raise their expectations.

tintagel wrote:

These look great. Although my players went down the well first and so they haven't even been to the first level yet. Bastards!

I did have a few questions:

1. Are both resolutions meant to be printed at the same 1" = 5' scale? (I've downloaded the files but I haven't opened and tried to print anything yet.)

2. Have you consisdered making an image the shows the house on the lands with a roof instead of the rooms showing?

Sometimes what I like to do is print out a "base" map without the room details and then print and cut out the rooms individually. So the players would be able to see the external shape of the house but wouldn't know the size or shape of the rooms they hadn't visited yet.

This worked for Thistletop because the players could see where they were in relation to the edges of the island, but the had no way of knowing the size, shape, and number of rooms waiting for them in the unvisited / unmapped sections.

My players are used to gridlines, but I can go either way. All the figures for medium critters have bases that are about an inch across. So if there's a spot without another figure on it, you can stand there. If your bases are close to touching, you're adjacent. Sometimes counting squares is slower than just pulling out a ruler, especially for diagonal movement in curvy tunnels.

Yes, both are. You can download the 200dpi version of the house + area by following the link in the description in the gallery.

I thought about doing a roof version, but that's more printing for those who use minis, and more development time for me - and since I'm not getting paid, time is hard to justify. I could spend similar amounts of time doing the next level, so you see where my priorities are.

I use a Virtual Tabletop program to run my games, which means no printing, no cutting, and I can use fog of war to hide any part of the map. Players use jpegs for their minis and things run MUCH smoother. I sold my minis and have never. looked. back. The VT I use (d20pro) is $30 and I only need one license, since it supports 1 player computer and the players share that. We play at the table and use a projector - though a monitor or TV works very well too.

Strange request for you Tintagel:

Can we have a copy of the Misgivings map without doors?

I just figured out how to animate doors in maptool, and it is the perfect effect for a haunted house map. If it's possible to modify the existing map still and remove the doors, that would be awesome... otherwise I'll just remove them myself. Thanks either way!

Scarab Sages

I may be able to swing that... LOL. I can get it to you on Sunday (I'm out of town for Valentine's Day).

What other specifications do you need? 100dpi? 200dpi? grids or no?

Wow! Thanks so much!

I'll be manually adjusting the resolution for Maptool, so 200 dpi would be ideal. I can add my own gridlines with that program that are of more use, so no gridlines please.

Thanks again, you have my gratitude...

Scarab Sages

Hey tintagel,

How do I print off your maps of the glasswork so I can have 1" battlemaps?

I don't print my maps, just use a VT, so I'm not too experienced with the process, but I think You will have to cut it up into printable sections (like 8x10). The image is at 100 DPI, so 100 pixels per 5 ft. You can use Photoshop, GIMP, or PosteRazor which I haven't used but hear is good.

Sorry I didn't deliver Toyrobots. Some job issues came up and consumed my time. I've been trying to get my portfolio in order and I've had to act on some time-sensitive things. I'll get it done this weekend, and hope to finish Misgivings levels 2, attic, and basement by Sunday too. I better, we game then.

Keep yer fingers crossed.

No problem, Tint... it was above and beyond the call of duty anyway. If you roll around to it, I probably have a few weeks at least before they set foot in the manor. Thank the gods my campaign is slower paced than yours!

Scarab Sages

Ok, here is a link to the 200dpi misgivings WITHOUT DOORS. I'll leave this up for a couple of weeks. I won't put it on my gallery unless more people need it.

Excellent...

Misgivings, Level 2 is done.

I also revamped level 1 and the surrounding areas. Most notably, I added stained glass effects and cobwebs to the 1st level and desaturated the outside vegetation considerably.

Hope you guys like this! Coming Next: Basement, Attci, & Caverns.

Fantastic Tintagel. You have done a great job in capturing the atmosphere of the place. I can't wait to use it.

Hi there,
Does anybody have combat maps (or just a map) for the underwater cave (where the Bunyip lives)?

thanks,
GRU

Edit: That's in "Burnt Offerings" (the attack on Thistletop)-

These are awesome! Thank you for all your hard work!

I also like the stained glass windows, very cool. Not to be totally greedy, but do you have any plans to do the last few windows? (From B22 & B29)

I haven't seen one sorry. If you are really desperate I could try and do one for you?

How could I say "no thanks" to an offer like that?!

If you could, I'd be most grateful...
When our game session ended last time, the dwaf cleric was hurteling down from the collapsed bridge and I thought It would be great to have battle the bunyip in it's lair...

Actually, this is one that I already mapped but forgot to put on my conversion site. Thanks for reminding me - I just uploaded the map to my gallery and Google site.

RotR project page - Burnt Offerings - Scroll down to the High-Res battlemap section, last entry.

Please?

Pretty please?

I'm glad Tintagel shared his underwater cave before I produced my poor effort. :o)

Well, I wish. Seriously, I'm working on getting some mappers together and making a serious proposal to Paizo about a 3rd party battlemap solution, but time is my enemy. I have a 1 year old, a wife, a job, and I'm trying to finish mapping Misgivings. Somewhere in there I am establishing Creative Gremlins for the purpose of bringing little-known artists and writers together into a creative community.

Right now, we just have a forum up and the beginnings of a main page (which is closed for building). CG Forums

Oh, and I'm looking for a job, as mine ends in June. :-S

P.S. Thanks for all the kind words. Your enthusiasm keeps me motivated (since I'm not getting paid for this - yet).

Scarab Sages

I've started a new thread for the Skinsaw Murders maps. I really should have done this a while back, and I apologize, Gr4ys for taking up so much of this thread on that.

http://paizo.com/paizo/messageboards/paizoPublishing/pathfinder/adventurePa th/runelords/combatMapsSkinsawMurders

This thread is probably best served as an aggregation thread so people can quickly see what has been made and visit those respective threads, not to discuss one particular project. Please continue to update your list so we can all find great works from the community!

tintagel wrote:

You don't have to apologise! Your work has saved me months and I'm glad you share it.

As long as this thread is useful to people and the work keeps rolling in then I'll keep updating it.

Once Tintagel has completed the Misgivings I will post an updated list so if you have anything to add please post it up.

Thanks again to everyone who has contributed to this thread.

I guess this counts as somthing I have created alot of people have missed it so this is my thread about expanding RORL to 6 players I also have it in Word Format that im more then happy to send out

If someone would be willing to host Joey Virtue's Word document I'll add it to the list or else point to the thread.

Yeah I have no idea how to host a document

Woo hoo!

We have achieved stickied-thread status!

Thanks vlcatko. vlcatko if you can give Jeoy Virtue your email address, he can mail you the Word doc, you host it and put the link up here and I add it to the list. Simple...:oS

The last of Misgivings is done:

Misgivings: Caverns

I was preparing for today's campaign last night and I realized, to my horror, that I didn't ever map this, so I burned the midnight oil and got to mapping furiously. I wish I could have spent a bit more time on it, but... meh.

AWESOME!

I did notice that the stairwell appears to be rendered at a lower resolution than everything else in the area. Was that simply a limitation of the art you had to work with?

Scarab Sages

That obvious huh? Yeah, limits on art & time. In retrospect, I should have just constructed one from scratch, but I stayed up til 4 am finishing the map, and I simply had to make if quick.

:-(

It's not that obvious; I didn't even notice it until my second time looking it over at full resolution. And it's not a big deal. In fact, it almost gives the impression that the stairwell is rising up out of the page, and is simply "out of focus".

tintagel wrote:

Once again Tintagel superb work. Thanks again for all you hard work on this my players (and I) will certainly appreciate it.

Now I know you are really busy but but would it be possible to do a version of the area around and including the Misgivings but with all the roof in place?

I think this would be fantastic for my players as they approach the house and then I can switch to the internal ground floor map once they enter.

Chinchbug did an awesome 3D version of the Sandpoint Cathedral

Here: http://www.rlucci.com/images/SP-Cath-SU.jpg

Lets get it added the next the list is updated please!

Scarab Sages

Very nice 3D model! I'm detecting Sketchup there! Could we get a link to the original sketchup file too? I could render out a video flyby if you want, and get it up on Youtube. Also, I don't mind hosting the file if need be!
