Playtest not possible because of missing classes?

Alpha Playtest Feedback General Discussion

I love the idea of a Pathfinder RPG. However unfortunately there are only
three classes included.

Important classes like druid, bard, sorcerer are missing. IMHO playtest is so far not really possible because the Pathfinder classes are not compatible with 3.5.

What do you think? Please release the missing classes soon.

Check out the last page of the Alpha 1 doc. The next release will be in about three weeks, and will have the barbarian, druid, ranger and sorcerer, as well as some spells and skill revisions. Alpha 3 will be out a month after that, with the rest of the classes.

Until then, we play with what's been presented and leave feedback on what works and what doesn't. And yes, we can play with just the four classes in Alpha 1, it is still a fair way to playtest the material we have right now.

My group has a human cleric/rogue, a human paladin, a goliath fighter/rogue, a half elf bard, and a gnome beguiler. We can still playtest the new feat progression, the new feats, skills, the CMB and modified rules for combat maneuvers without having a full write up for all of the classes. In fact, having a beguiler and a goliath in the party make for a bit of a playtest, to help see how backwards compatible the system really is.

That having been said, the goliath may remake himself as a strict fighter, since he only took rogue so that he could try to come up with some other interesting things to do in combat, and now feels that fighter more than fills he need for this (or rather, he is trying to make sure he doesn't want to go straight rogue, but is leaning toward straight fighter). Concept wise, either one still works, since he was never a traditional weapons and armor warrior or a sneaky rogue type.

From the DMs side, I'll be trying out the new XP table, the XP chart, and how NPCs made with the new rules will be working, and I've started to rework some opponents that might have been some class like dread necromancer into a specialist wizard to try out their new abilities from the other side of the screen.

So I think you can still get a lot of playtesting done, and in a meaningful manner, without every class being present yet.

As said, those will come, but not until the rules they've shown have been tested with the classes they've shown. You don't need any of the classes you mention to run an adventure. Rogue covers all the bard skills. Cleric and Wizard have more magic then a druid and Sorcerer. Heck, you don't even mention Barbarian and Ranger.

I think you're more interested in your preferred classes then making sure the game works. They release a little bit at a time so that everything gets tested.

The four classes in the Alpha are the Core of D&D, not the ones you mentioned.

Just playtest with the 3.5 version of classes where no Pathfinder version exists. You have revised races, skills, feats, combat rules, spells, and xp rules, all compatible with the 3.5 versions of the druid/ranger/bard/monk/paladin/barbarian/sorcerer.
